Chapter 2 - The Secret Child of the Underworld King

The underground clinic beneath the Castiglione pharmaceutical warehouse had saved many lives.

Politicians.

Business owners.

Men who could not walk into a normal hospital without attracting questions.

People whose names never appeared in official records.

The place was built for emergencies.

But nobody inside those walls had ever seen Victor Castiglione arrive carrying someone in his arms.

The doors opened before he reached them.

Doctors and nurses rushed forward.

"Prepare trauma room one!"

"Get the monitors ready!"

"Move!"

Victor ignored every voice around him.

His entire world had narrowed down to the woman against his chest.

Nora.

Her head rested against his shoulder, her blonde hair still dripping rainwater onto his expensive suit. Her face was pale, almost unreal under the harsh white lights of the underground facility.

Six months ago, he had watched her leave.

Tonight, he found her nearly dead.

And somehow, impossibly, she was carrying his child.

"Victor, we need to take her now."

Dr. Aris Keller stood in front of him, already wearing surgical gloves.

He was one of the few people in the world who spoke to Victor without fear.

Not because he was brave.

Because he understood Victor.

"You know the rules," Keller said. "If we don't move immediately, we risk losing both of them."

Both.

The word struck harder than any bullet.

Victor looked down at Nora.

For years, he had controlled every situation he entered.

He planned.

He calculated.

He predicted.

But standing there, watching strangers prepare to take the woman he loved away from him, he realized there was one thing money could not buy.

Control.

"Nora."

His voice softened.

A voice nobody in the room had ever heard.

Not his men.

Not his enemies.

Nobody.

Only her.

Her eyelashes moved slightly.

For a second, her eyes opened.

She looked at him.

Confusion filled her expression.

Maybe she thought she was dreaming.

Maybe she believed the storm had finally taken her somewhere beyond reality.

"Victor?"

The sound of his name leaving her lips nearly destroyed him.

"I'm here."

His fingers gently touched her hand.

"I'm right here."

Her eyes filled with tears.

Not because she was happy.

Because she remembered.

The last time she saw him.

The last conversation.

The last night in the penthouse.

"I tried..." she whispered.

Victor leaned closer.

"What?"

Her breathing became uneven.

"I tried to tell you."

His heart stopped.

Tell him what?

About the baby?

About the danger?

About what happened after she left?

Before he could ask, the monitor beside her began beeping faster.

The medical team immediately moved.

"We have to go."

The doors to the operating room opened.

Victor refused to let go.

"Victor."

Keller's voice became firm.

"Let us save her."

For a moment, the most feared man in Chicago stood frozen.

Then he slowly released Nora's hand.

Only when her fingers slipped away from his did he realize something terrifying.

He was shaking.

Victor Castiglione was shaking.

The doors closed.

And for the first time in many years, Victor was forced to wait.

The hallway outside the operating room was silent.

Not peaceful.

Silent.

There was a difference.

Peace was when nothing bad happened.

Silence was when everyone was afraid of what would happen next.

Victor stood in the middle of the corridor.

His shirt was still stained with Nora's blood.

Rainwater dripped from his hair.

His expensive coat was ruined.

He looked like a man who had walked through a war zone.

Because he had.

Only this war was happening inside his own heart.

Behind him, Tommy stood near the wall.

He had known Victor for more than fifteen years.

He had watched him build an empire from nothing.

He had watched him face armed enemies without blinking.

He had watched him make decisions that changed the balance of power in Chicago.

But tonight was different.

Tonight, Tommy saw something he never expected.

Regret.

"Boss."

Victor did not answer.

Tommy hesitated.

"We're already searching the area where we found her."

Still nothing.

"We have men checking cameras, traffic records, every vehicle that entered that district."

Victor finally spoke.

His voice was quiet.

"Find out who did this."

Tommy nodded.

"We will."

Victor turned.

"No."

His eyes were cold.

Not angry.

Something worse.

Calm.

"I want the truth."

A pause.

"I want every person involved."

Tommy understood.

This was not business.

This was not territory.

This was personal.

"Understood."

Victor looked back at the operating room doors.

Then his expression changed.

Because there was something else.

Something he had not asked.

Something he was almost afraid to know.

"The baby."

Tommy lowered his eyes.

"Boss..."

Victor's jaw tightened.

"Find out everything."

Tommy nodded slowly.

"The doctor will tell you."

Victor looked through the glass window of the operating room.

A woman he thought he had lost forever was fighting for her life.

And somewhere inside her was a child who carried his blood.

His family.

A family he never knew existed.

Six months earlier.

The last night Victor saw Nora returned to him with painful clarity.

She had stood in the middle of their penthouse apartment.

Not his penthouse.

Their home.

That was what she used to call it.

Home.

Victor remembered the suitcase near the door.

The silence.

The tears she tried to hide.

"You don't understand," Nora had said.

Victor had stood several feet away, unable to move.

"I understand more than you think."

"No, you don't."

Her voice broke.

"You think keeping me away from your enemies means I'm safe."

She wiped her tears.

"But Victor, I'm already trapped."

Those words stayed with him.

Trapped.

Because that was exactly what his world did to everyone close to him.

"I love you."

He had said it.

The first and only time.

Nora froze.

Because Victor Castiglione did not say those words.

Not because he did not feel them.

Because he was afraid of them.

But instead of staying, she shook her head.

"I love you too."

A painful smile appeared.

"That's why I have to leave."

And then she walked away.

Victor let her.

The biggest mistake of his life.

A sharp sound pulled him back.

The operating room light changed.

Hours had passed.

Victor had not moved.

Not once.

The door opened.

Dr. Keller stepped outside.

Victor immediately looked up.

"How is she?"

Keller removed his mask.

"She lost a dangerous amount of blood, but we stabilized her."

Victor exhaled slowly.

For the first time all night.

A breath.

A real one.

"And the baby?"

Keller looked at him.

"The baby is alive."

Victor closed his eyes.

A strange emotion crossed his face.

Relief.

Fear.

Love.

All at once.

"A boy or girl?"

Keller smiled slightly.

"A boy."

The word hit him differently.

A son.

Victor Castiglione had spent his entire life building an empire.

Creating enemies.

Preparing for war.

But he had never imagined hearing those words.

A son.

"Can I see her?"

"Soon."

Keller studied him.

"Victor."

He stopped.

"She was lucky."

Victor looked at him.

"But?"

Keller's expression became serious.

"But someone wanted her dead."

The hallway became colder.

"We found signs of deliberate injuries. She wasn't caught in an accident."

Victor already knew.

But hearing it confirmed something inside him.

Someone had hunted her.

Someone had found her after she disappeared.

Someone had taken advantage of the fact that she was alone.

And someone had made the mistake of leaving her alive.

"Did she say anything?"

Keller hesitated.

"Before surgery, she kept repeating one thing."

Victor stepped closer.

"What?"

The doctor looked directly at him.

"She said she was sorry."

Victor frowned.

"Sorry?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"She said she should have told you."

The words followed him into the silence.

She should have told him.

About the baby.

About whatever happened.

About everything.

Victor looked through the glass.

Nora lay unconscious, surrounded by machines.

The woman who walked away carrying his child.

The woman who had suffered alone.

The woman he failed to protect.

His hands closed into fists.

For six months, Victor Castiglione believed losing Nora was the price he had to pay to keep her safe.

Now he understood the truth.

He had been wrong.

The danger had never disappeared.

It had only waited.

And someone had hurt the only woman who ever loved him.

Victor turned away from the operating room.

His eyes were no longer filled with guilt.

They were filled with purpose.

"Tommy."

The driver immediately stepped forward.

"Yes, boss?"

Victor looked toward the underground exit.

"Lock down the city."

Tommy paused.

"All of it?"

Victor's expression hardened.

"Every street."

A moment of silence.

Then:

"Someone tried to take my family from me."

His voice dropped.

"Now I take everything from them."

May you like

The storm outside continued.

But the real storm had only begun.
