Chapter 4 - The Enemy Who Wanted Victor Castiglione Broken

For six months, Victor Castiglione believed the greatest punishment in his life was losing Nora.

He was wrong.

Losing her had been painful.

Finding her again and realizing she had suffered alone was something far worse.

Because now Victor knew the truth.

The woman he loved had not abandoned him.

She had been running from the darkness surrounding him.

And that darkness had found her anyway.

The private hospital room remained quiet after Nora fell asleep.

Victor sat beside her bed, watching the slow rise and fall of her breathing.

He had spent entire nights sitting across negotiation tables with men who wanted him dead.

He had stared down armed enemies.

He had walked into dangerous situations knowing there was a chance he would not walk out.

But none of those moments compared to this.

Sitting beside Nora.

Waiting.

Hoping.

The machines around her continued their steady rhythm.

Each sound reminded him that she was alive.

That their son was alive.

And that someone had almost taken both away from him.

Victor looked down at Nora's hand resting on the blanket.

Slowly, carefully, he reached out and touched her fingers.

Not because he wanted reassurance.

Because he needed to remember she was real.

For months, he had forced himself to believe she was safer without him.

Now he understood something.

The distance had not protected her.

It had only left her defenseless.

A quiet knock came from the door.

Victor immediately withdrew his hand.

The warmth disappeared from his face.

The man in the chair vanished.

The leader returned.

"Come in."

The door opened.

Tommy Gallagher stepped inside.

Behind him were Richie Gallagher and Mateo Vargas, two of Victor's most trusted men.

They stopped when they saw Nora sleeping.

Neither man spoke.

They had known Victor for years.

They had seen him build an empire.

They had seen him punish betrayal.

They had seen him become a legend in Chicago's criminal world.

But seeing him beside Nora was different.

Their boss looked human.

And that was something dangerous.

Because men like Victor Castiglione were most dangerous when someone gave them a reason to care.

"Report."

Victor's voice was low.

Mateo stepped forward.

"We checked every camera within five miles of where you found her."

"And?"

"Most were damaged by the storm."

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"Most?"

Mateo hesitated.

"One camera caught something."

He handed Victor a tablet.

Victor stood and walked away from Nora's bed before looking at the screen.

The footage was blurry.

Rain covered everything.

But there was enough.

A black vehicle.

A person getting out.

Then Nora.

Victor watched silently.

Again.

And again.

His expression did not change.

That scared his men more than anger.

"Enhance the vehicle."

Richie spoke.

"We already tried."

Victor looked at him.

"And?"

"We couldn't get the plate."

A pause.

"But we found something else."

Richie placed a photograph on the table.

Victor picked it up.

A symbol.

Painted on the side of the vehicle.

A small mark.

Almost invisible.

But Victor recognized it.

His eyes became colder.

"No."

Tommy looked confused.

"You know it?"

Victor stared at the symbol.

A memory surfaced.

Years ago.

Before he controlled Chicago.

Before people feared his name.

There had been another organization.

One that believed Victor's rise threatened them.

The Black Serpents.

A violent group that had disappeared after Victor destroyed their operations.

Everyone thought they were gone.

Victor knew better.

People like that did not disappear.

They waited.

"Impossible," Mateo said quietly.

Victor looked at him.

"You know the symbol?"

Mateo nodded.

"My father used to work security for a rival family. He told me stories."

A pause.

"The Black Serpents marked their enemies before they attacked."

The room became silent.

Victor looked back at Nora.

His jaw tightened.

They had not attacked him.

They had attacked her.

That changed everything.

"Find out who is left."

Tommy nodded.

"We will."

Victor turned.

"No."

Everyone stopped.

Victor's voice remained calm.

"Don't just find them."

A pause.

"Make sure they know we found them."

Across the city, inside an abandoned building near the river, a man watched the same footage Victor had just seen.

The room was dark.

Only the glow of several computer monitors illuminated his face.

Adrian Vale smiled.

For years, people believed Adrian Vale was dead.

That was exactly how he wanted it.

Dead men were ignored.

Dead men were forgotten.

Dead men could plan.

He watched the image of Victor kneeling in the rain beside Nora.

The great Victor Castiglione.

The untouchable king.

On his knees.

Broken.

Exactly as planned.

"Interesting."

The man standing beside him looked confused.

"Sir?"

Adrian leaned back.

"He found her."

The other man frowned.

"Then why are you smiling?"

Because Adrian had spent years studying Victor.

He knew Victor's weakness.

Everyone thought Victor's weakness was money.

Power.

Control.

They were wrong.

Victor's weakness was love.

The moment Victor cared about someone, he became predictable.

And predictable enemies were easy to destroy.

"Because now he will make a mistake."

Adrian looked at the screen.

"He always does when it comes to her."

Back at the hospital, Nora woke up near midnight.

The first thing she noticed was the silence.

The second thing she noticed was Victor.

He was still there.

Same chair.

Same position.

Like he had not moved.

"You stayed."

Victor looked up.

His eyes softened immediately.

"Of course I stayed."

Nora looked away.

"You shouldn't."

A small pain crossed his face.

"Why?"

"Because this will bring danger."

Victor stood.

"Nora."

She closed her eyes.

"You don't understand."

"I understand everything."

"No, you don't."

Her voice became emotional.

"If they know about the baby..."

"They already know."

The words froze her.

Her eyes opened.

"What?"

Victor's expression darkened.

"The people who attacked you knew."

Nora's breathing changed.

Victor moved closer.

"But they made one mistake."

She looked at him.

"They hurt you."

His voice became dangerously calm.

"And they made me find you."

Nora saw the change.

The same darkness she had feared.

The same man who controlled Chicago.

"Victor..."

He stopped.

Because he heard the fear in her voice.

Not fear of him.

Fear of what he would become.

That hurt more.

Victor lowered his voice.

"I won't let my anger destroy what we have."

Nora looked surprised.

Because six months ago, she would never have believed him.

But now...

Something had changed.

"You promise?"

Victor looked at her.

"I promise you one thing."

He took her hand.

"I will protect you."

A pause.

"But I will also protect the man I need to become."

Nora stared at him.

For the first time, she saw the possibility.

Not the monster.

Not the king.

A father.

Their moment was interrupted by the sudden sound of Victor's phone.

He answered immediately.

"Yes?"

Tommy's voice came through.

"Boss."

Victor's expression changed.

"What happened?"

A pause.

Then Tommy spoke.

"We found the person who ordered the attack."

Victor's eyes hardened.

"Who?"

The answer came quietly.

And it changed everything.

"Someone who knows Nora."

Victor looked toward her.

Nora immediately noticed his expression.

"What is it?"

Victor did not answer.

Because suddenly the past was returning.

The reason Nora left.

The reason she was hunted.

The reason someone wanted his family destroyed.

It was not random.

It was personal.

"Tommy."

"Yes, boss?"

Victor's voice became cold.

"Bring me everything."

He ended the call.

Nora looked at him.

"Victor?"

He reached for her hand.

But this time, there was no hesitation.

"There is something you need to tell me."

Her face changed.

Because she knew.

Whatever came next would reveal the truth she had been trying to hide.

"The night you left me..."

Victor stared into her eyes.

"Who helped you disappear?"

Nora went completely still.

And Victor knew.

The answer was not going to be simple.

Because someone had been protecting Nora.

Someone had helped her escape.

May you like

And whoever that person was...

They knew more about the attack than anyone else.
