Chapter 5 - The Truth Hidden Behind the Blood

For six months, Nora Hayes carried a secret that she believed belonged only to her.

She was wrong.

The moment Victor Castiglione walked back into her life, every secret she had buried began to rise from the darkness.

And the first one was the person who helped her disappear.

Nora stared at Victor from the hospital bed.

She could see the questions in his eyes.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Just pain.

That was somehow worse.

Because Victor angry was a man prepared for war.

Victor hurt was a man searching for answers.

And Nora knew she was the reason he was suffering.

"Victor..."

Her voice was weak.

He sat down beside her again.

"I need the truth, Nora."

She looked away.

The rain tapped softly against the hospital window.

For a moment, she was back in that apartment six months ago.

Alone.

Afraid.

Pregnant.

Running from a world she never wanted to be part of.

"I didn't leave because I stopped loving you."

Victor's expression changed slightly.

The words mattered.

More than she knew.

"I left because I loved you too much."

He looked at her silently.

Nora took a slow breath.

"When I found out I was pregnant, I wanted to tell you."

Victor's eyes lowered.

"But?"

"But I saw what your life was doing to you."

Her voice trembled.

"You were becoming someone I didn't recognize."

Victor looked away.

Because deep down, he knew.

The violence.

The enemies.

The constant danger.

He had convinced himself it was necessary.

But Nora had seen the cost.

"I remember one night," she continued.

"You came home after a meeting."

Victor stayed quiet.

"You had blood on your hands."

His jaw tightened.

"It wasn't mine."

"I know."

Nora looked at him.

"That's what scared me."

The silence between them grew.

"Not that you were hurt."

A tear appeared in her eyes.

"But that you weren't."

Victor felt the words hit him.

Because that was the truth.

He had become so used to violence that it no longer shocked him.

Until it touched her.

"I thought if I told you about the baby, you would never let me go."

Nora whispered.

"And I was right."

Victor didn't deny it.

He couldn't.

"If I knew..."

"You would have brought me here."

"Yes."

"You would have surrounded me with guards."

"Yes."

"You would have started a war."

Victor looked at her.

This time, he had no answer.

Because she was right.

Nora reached toward her stomach.

"I didn't want our son to be born into a war."

Victor looked down.

Their son.

Every time he heard those words, something inside him changed.

For the first time in his life, he wanted something more than power.

He wanted a future.

"I had help."

Nora finally said.

Victor looked up.

"Who?"

She hesitated.

And that hesitation told him everything.

"Her name is Elena."

Victor frowned.

"Elena?"

"Elena Marquez."

The name meant nothing to him.

And that bothered him.

Because Victor knew almost everyone connected to his world.

"Who is she?"

Nora looked at him.

"Someone who saved my life."

Six months earlier.

When Nora left the penthouse, she had nowhere to go.

She had no family nearby.

No friends who understood what she was escaping.

No one she could trust.

Until Elena found her.

Elena had been a nurse at the small clinic where Nora received her pregnancy confirmation.

She noticed things.

The way Nora looked over her shoulder.

The way she flinched whenever a black car passed.

The way she refused to write an emergency contact number.

"You are running from someone."

Nora remembered Elena saying those words.

Not as an accusation.

As concern.

Nora had denied it.

But Elena saw through her.

Eventually, Nora told her everything.

Not everything about Victor's business.

Not the details.

Just enough.

"I love him," Nora had admitted.

"But loving him feels dangerous."

Elena understood.

Because she had seen the damage powerful people could create.

She helped Nora find a small apartment.

She helped her change doctors.

She helped her disappear.

But Elena had warned her.

"You can't run forever."

Nora remembered that conversation.

"I know."

"Then why are you doing it?"

Nora had touched her stomach.

"Because I need time."

Time to think.

Time to protect her child.

Time to believe she could build a life away from Victor's world.

But someone had found her anyway.

Victor listened without interrupting.

That alone showed Nora how much he had changed.

The old Victor would have demanded answers.

The old Victor would have already sent men searching.

But now he waited.

"What happened to Elena?"

Victor asked.

Nora's expression changed.

"She disappeared."

The room became colder.

"When?"

"Two weeks before the attack."

Victor's eyes sharpened.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Nora looked down.

"Because I thought she left."

Victor immediately understood.

She was wrong.

"Someone took her."

Nora looked at him.

"You think?"

Victor's face became unreadable.

"I don't believe in coincidences."

He stood.

"Nora."

She looked up.

"The people who attacked you weren't trying to kill you immediately."

Her face went pale.

"What?"

"They left you alive."

Victor's voice became quiet.

"That means they wanted something."

Nora swallowed.

"They wanted me to find you."

"Exactly."

A chill moved through the room.

Because suddenly the attack made sense.

It wasn't random.

It wasn't revenge.

It was a message.

Someone wanted Victor Castiglione to know they could reach the one person he loved.

And they wanted him angry.

Two hours later, Victor stood inside a private meeting room beneath the warehouse.

The room was normally used for business discussions.

Tonight, it was an investigation room.

Screens covered the walls.

Photographs.

Surveillance footage.

Documents.

Everything connected to Nora's attack.

Richie placed a folder on the table.

"We found Elena."

Victor looked up immediately.

"Where?"

Richie's expression was serious.

"Alive."

A moment of relief passed through the room.

"Where is she?"

"Safe house."

Victor stepped closer.

"What happened?"

Richie opened the folder.

"She was taken three weeks ago."

Victor's expression hardened.

"By who?"

Richie hesitated.

Then placed a photograph on the table.

A man.

Victor stared.

His entire body went still.

Because he knew that face.

Not personally.

But historically.

A ghost from his past.

"Adrian Vale."

Tommy looked confused.

"Boss?"

Victor said nothing.

Because Adrian Vale was supposed to be dead.

Years ago, Adrian had tried to destroy Victor before Victor became powerful.

He was intelligent.

Patient.

Dangerous.

Unlike other enemies, Adrian didn't use violence first.

He used people.

He studied weaknesses.

He waited.

And Victor had one weakness.

Nora.

"He orchestrated this."

Mateo looked at the screen.

"You think he knew about the baby?"

Victor's silence was enough.

Everyone understood.

Adrian knew.

And that meant something worse.

He had been watching Nora for months.

Watching Victor.

Waiting.

"Why now?"

Tommy asked.

Victor looked at the photograph.

"Because he wanted me to find her."

A pause.

"He wanted me emotional."

Richie frowned.

"But why?"

Victor's eyes darkened.

"Because an emotional enemy makes mistakes."

The room became silent.

Victor picked up the photograph.

For years, people had feared Victor Castiglione because he was impossible to manipulate.

But Adrian Vale had found the one thing Victor could not ignore.

Love.

And that made Victor more dangerous than ever.

Because Adrian believed Nora was Victor's weakness.

He was wrong.

Nora was the reason Victor would survive.

Later that night, Victor returned to Nora's room.

She was awake.

Waiting.

"You found something."

It wasn't a question.

Victor sat beside her.

"Yes."

"Is it bad?"

He looked at her.

"It is dangerous."

Nora closed her eyes.

"I knew this would happen."

Victor immediately shook his head.

"No."

She opened her eyes.

"You don't understand."

"I understand."

His voice softened.

"For six months, you carried our child alone because you thought protecting me meant leaving me."

A pause.

"But you were wrong."

Nora looked at him.

Victor gently held her hand.

"Protecting me means letting me stand beside you."

The words broke through the walls she had built.

For the first time since leaving him, Nora allowed herself to believe something.

Maybe she did not have to fight alone.

Maybe their son did not have to grow up between two separate worlds.

But outside the hospital, hidden in the darkness of the city, Adrian Vale watched the building.

And smiled.

May you like

Because Victor Castiglione had finally found his family.

Which meant Adrian finally knew exactly where to strike.
