Chapter 6 - The Mafia Boss Who Chose Love Over Power

Victor Castiglione had spent his entire life learning how to win wars.

He knew how to negotiate with enemies who wanted his empire.

He knew how to identify betrayal before it happened.

He knew how to make powerful men afraid with only a few quiet words.

But Adrian Vale had discovered something Victor had never prepared for.

A war that could not be won with power alone.

Because this time, Victor was not protecting territory.

He was protecting his family.

And family was something Victor had never truly understood until he almost lost it.

The first thing Victor did after discovering Adrian Vale was alive was not revenge.

That surprised everyone.

Especially his own men.

For years, Victor's reputation was built on immediate action.

An enemy attacked.

Victor responded.

A threat appeared.

Victor eliminated it.

But this time, when Tommy asked for permission to move against Adrian, Victor simply said:

"No."

The entire room went silent.

Tommy looked at him carefully.

"Boss?"

Victor stood in front of the large windows of his private office, looking down at the city.

Chicago was covered in gray clouds.

Almost like the storm from the night he found Nora.

"Adrian wants me angry."

Tommy frowned.

"He attacked Nora."

"I know."

"Then why are we waiting?"

Victor turned around.

Because everyone expected rage.

Everyone expected violence.

Instead, they saw something colder.

Control.

"Because that's exactly what he wants."

The room became quiet.

Victor walked toward the table where photographs and documents were spread out.

"Adrian spent months planning this."

He pointed at the evidence.

"He didn't randomly find Nora."

A pause.

"He studied her."

His fingers tightened.

"He knew she was my weakness."

Tommy looked at the photographs.

"Or he thinks she is."

Victor looked at him.

"No."

His voice became low.

"That's where he made his mistake."

Everyone waited.

Victor picked up the photograph of Nora.

"She is not my weakness."

A pause.

"She is the reason I still have something worth fighting for."

At the private clinic, Nora watched the rain outside her window.

She had spent six months believing she was alone.

Now Victor was back.

And somehow, that scared her more than being alone.

Because being alone meant she only had herself to protect.

Having Victor beside her meant she had to believe someone else could protect her too.

And that was harder.

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

She expected Victor.

Instead, Dr. Keller entered.

"How are you feeling?"

Nora smiled slightly.

"Like I have been hit by a truck."

The doctor laughed softly.

"That's actually a good sign."

He checked the monitors.

"The baby is doing well."

Nora placed her hand over her stomach.

A small smile appeared.

"Does Victor know?"

Keller looked at her.

"Know what?"

"That I am still scared."

The doctor remained quiet.

Because he understood.

Nora was not afraid of Victor hurting her.

She was afraid of loving him again.

"He looks different."

Keller said.

Nora looked up.

"What?"

"Victor."

A pause.

"I've treated him for injuries before."

Nora was surprised.

"You have?"

"Many times."

Keller smiled faintly.

"The man who walked into this clinic years ago was someone who believed pain was just another part of life."

He looked toward the door.

"But the man sitting beside your bed now..."

He shook his head.

"That's different."

Nora lowered her eyes.

"People don't change that easily."

"No."

Keller agreed.

"But sometimes they find a reason to try."

That evening, Victor returned.

But this time, Nora noticed something.

He wasn't carrying his phone.

He wasn't giving orders.

He wasn't surrounded by men.

He came alone.

"You look different."

Nora said.

Victor raised an eyebrow.

"Different?"

"Usually when you enter a room, everyone becomes nervous."

A small almost-smile appeared on his face.

"And now?"

"Now you look tired."

Victor sat beside her.

"I am."

Nora studied him.

"Because of me?"

"No."

His answer came immediately.

"Because I spent six months believing I did the right thing by letting you go."

The honesty surprised her.

Victor looked down.

"I thought keeping you away from me was protection."

He shook his head.

"It wasn't."

Nora stayed silent.

"I should have fought harder for you."

"Victor..."

"No."

He looked at her.

"Let me say this."

For a moment, Nora saw the man she remembered.

Not the powerful leader.

The man who loved her.

"I should have trusted you enough to tell you the truth."

She looked away.

"You were trying to protect me."

"I was afraid."

That stopped her.

Victor Castiglione admitting fear was almost impossible.

"I was afraid that if I let you see everything I was, you would hate me."

Nora looked back at him.

"And did I?"

"No."

A pause.

"You were the only person who saw me and stayed."

Her eyes softened.

"Until I left."

Victor nodded.

"Until you left."

Neither of them spoke.

Because sometimes the truth hurt more than lies.

The next morning, Elena Marquez arrived at the clinic.

Nora almost cried when she saw her.

"Elena."

The woman rushed forward and hugged her carefully.

For a moment, everything disappeared.

The danger.

The fear.

The secrets.

They were just two people who had survived something terrible.

"I thought you were dead."

Nora whispered.

Elena held her tighter.

"I thought you were too."

Victor stood nearby, watching.

He noticed something immediately.

Elena was afraid.

Not of him.

Of what she knew.

When Nora introduced them, Elena looked at Victor.

"I know who you are."

Victor's expression remained calm.

"Then you know why I need answers."

Elena nodded.

"I do."

She took a breath.

"Adrian Vale didn't just find Nora."

Victor stepped closer.

"What do you mean?"

"He was looking for her before she left."

The room went silent.

Victor's expression changed.

"Explain."

Elena looked at Nora.

Then back at Victor.

"Someone inside your organization gave him information."

Victor froze.

Because that possibility was worse than Adrian alone.

A traitor.

Someone close.

Someone who knew his movements.

Someone who knew about Nora.

"Who?"

Elena shook her head.

"I don't know."

A pause.

"But I heard one name."

Victor waited.

"Before they took me, I heard them talking."

Her voice lowered.

"They said the Castiglione family would fall because of the child."

Victor's eyes darkened.

The child.

Not Nora.

Not Victor.

Their son.

Someone wanted to destroy the future of his family.

That night, Victor gathered his closest men.

No shouting.

No anger.

Just silence.

The kind of silence that meant something serious was coming.

Richie.

Mateo.

Tommy.

Everyone stood around the table.

Victor placed a file down.

"There is a traitor."

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood what that meant.

Betrayal from outside was expected.

Betrayal from inside was different.

Victor looked at each person.

"I built this organization because loyalty mattered."

His voice was calm.

"But someone used my trust to hurt my family."

Tommy looked at him.

"What do we do?"

Victor stared at the city outside.

The old Victor would have destroyed everything.

The old Victor would have chosen revenge.

But the man standing there now had a woman upstairs.

A son who had not been born yet.

A future.

"We find the traitor."

A pause.

"But we do it quietly."

Mateo looked surprised.

"Quietly?"

Victor nodded.

"Adrian wants chaos."

His eyes hardened.

"He wants me to become the monster everyone believes I am."

A moment passed.

"He's going to be disappointed."

Later that night, Victor returned to Nora.

She was awake.

"You look like you are carrying the whole world."

She said softly.

Victor sat beside her.

"Maybe I am."

Nora smiled slightly.

"No."

She looked at him.

"You are carrying us."

The words stayed with him.

Us.

Not him.

Not her.

Us.

Victor reached for her hand.

This time, she held on immediately.

For six months, they had both been running.

She ran from his darkness.

He ran from his fear.

But now they were standing together.

And for the first time, Victor understood something.

Power could build an empire.

Money could buy almost anything.

Fear could control an entire city.

But none of those things could replace what he had right now.

Nora.

Their son.

Their second chance.

Unfortunately, Adrian Vale was watching.

And he knew Victor had changed.

Which meant Adrian had to change his plan.

Because a man who had nothing to lose was dangerous.

May you like

But a man with something to protect...

Was unstoppable.
