Chapter 9 - The Child Who Brought Them Back Together

The truth had finally found its way home.

But truth did not always bring peace.

Sometimes, it brought war.

After discovering that Leo’s illness had not been a simple medical problem, the Rossi mansion changed completely.

Nobody trusted anyone.

Every person who worked there was investigated.

Every document was reviewed.

Every decision made during the last three years was questioned.

Because Lorenzo Rossi had spent years searching for the person who destroyed his family.

And now he was standing closer than he ever imagined.

His own brother.

Marco.

I saw the pain in Lorenzo’s eyes every time he looked at the evidence.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Pain.

Because betrayal from an enemy was expected.

But betrayal from family was something that broke a person differently.

Especially when that family member had been there during the darkest moments.

Marco had stood beside Lorenzo after Elena died.

He had hugged him.

He had told him everything would be okay.

And all that time…

he may have been the reason Lorenzo lost everything.

I found Lorenzo in his office late one night.

The room was dark except for the light from his desk lamp.

The same photograph of Elena was sitting in front of him.

The one from the mysterious envelope.

“She looks happy.”

My voice made him look up.

For a moment, he looked exhausted.

“She always was.”

I walked closer.

“She loved life.”

A small smile appeared on his face.

“She loved simple things.”

He looked at the picture.

“She hated expensive restaurants.”

That surprised me.

“Really?”

Lorenzo nodded.

“She said the best meals were the ones where people actually talked.”

His expression softened.

“She used to say a house wasn’t a home because of how beautiful it looked.”

A pause.

“It was a home because of who was inside.”

I understood why losing her destroyed him.

Because Elena was not just his wife.

She was the person who gave meaning to everything else.

“What happened to her was not your fault.”

I had said those words before.

But this time, Lorenzo reacted differently.

Because he was tired of carrying blame.

“I spent three years punishing myself.”

His voice was quiet.

“I thought if I had been stronger, smarter, more careful…”

He stopped.

“But the truth is, some people choose to hurt others.”

I nodded.

“And that choice belongs to them.”

For a moment, he looked at me.

Then he smiled slightly.

“You always know what to say.”

I laughed softly.

“No.”

I looked away.

“I just know what it feels like to blame yourself.”

The silence between us became comfortable.

Something that once felt impossible.

When I first entered the Rossi mansion, Lorenzo and I were strangers.

A powerful man.

A grieving maid.

Two people who had no reason to trust each other.

Now, somehow, we had become something else.

Something neither of us expected.

Family.

The next morning, Lorenzo received the information he had been waiting for.

They found proof.

Not everything.

But enough.

Marco had been secretly communicating with the same people connected to Elena’s death.

He had access to medical information.

Financial records.

Security details.

Everything someone would need to destroy a family from within.

Lorenzo stared at the report for a long time.

Then he closed it.

“Where is he?”

The security chief answered carefully.

“He left the city last night.”

Of course.

Marco knew.

He knew the truth was coming.

“He’s running.”

Lorenzo stood.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“He’s preparing.”

And he was right.

Because Marco was not the kind of person who ran because he was afraid.

He ran because he wanted control.

That afternoon, something unexpected happened.

Leo laughed.

A real laugh.

A sound nobody in the mansion had heard before.

The nurse called everyone immediately.

I was in the garden when I heard.

I ran inside.

And there he was.

Lorenzo was holding Leo.

Making ridiculous expressions.

Trying to make him smile.

And somehow, the terrifying mafia heir who made entire rooms nervous was making a baby laugh.

I stopped at the doorway.

I could not help smiling.

Lorenzo noticed.

“What?”

I shook my head.

“Nothing.”

“No, tell me.”

I smiled.

“I just never imagined seeing Lorenzo Rossi making funny faces.”

He looked offended.

“I’m his father.”

“Exactly.”

Leo laughed again.

And Lorenzo looked at him like he had just received the greatest gift in the world.

That was when I realized something.

Leo had not only survived.

He had changed everything.

He brought back the part of Lorenzo that grief had buried.

The part that could laugh.

The part that could love.

The part that could be human.

That evening, Lorenzo asked me to join him on the balcony.

The city stretched beneath us.

Quiet.

Beautiful.

Different from the world inside the mansion.

“I need to tell you something.”

I looked at him.

“That sounds serious.”

“It is.”

He took a breath.

“I have spent years believing my family was gone.”

I listened.

“Then you came here.”

I looked down.

“Lorenzo…”

“Please.”

The way he said it made me stop.

“You came here carrying your own pain.”

He looked at me.

“And somehow, you still gave my son love.”

My eyes became wet.

“You gave Leo something nobody else could.”

He paused.

“And you gave me something too.”

I stayed silent.

“Hope.”

The word felt heavy.

Beautiful.

Scary.

“I don’t know what happens after this.”

He continued.

“With Marco. With everything.”

A pause.

“But I know one thing.”

He looked directly at me.

“I don’t want you to leave.”

My heart skipped.

“Lorenzo…”

“I’m not asking because Leo needs you.”

His voice was firm.

“I’m asking because I do.”

The honesty shocked me.

The old Lorenzo would never have said something like that.

The old Lorenzo would have hidden behind power.

Behind control.

But this man was different.

This was the man Elena loved.

The man Leo needed.

The man I had slowly come to care about.

Before I could answer, the alarm system activated.

Both of us froze.

A guard’s voice came through the speaker.

“Mr. Rossi.”

Lorenzo immediately changed.

“What happened?”

“Someone entered the property.”

My heart tightened.

“Who?”

A pause.

Then the guard answered.

“Marco Rossi.”

Everything went silent.

Lorenzo looked at me.

Then toward the nursery.

The past had finally returned.

But this time, he was ready.

Minutes later, Marco stood in the main hall.

Calm.

Confident.

Almost relaxed.

Like he had not betrayed his own family.

Lorenzo walked toward him.

The two brothers faced each other.

Years of memories between them.

Love.

Trust.

Betrayal.

“You came back.”

Marco smiled.

“I thought we should talk.”

“You lost the right to talk to me.”

Marco looked toward the nursery.

Then at me.

“You replaced me quickly.”

Lorenzo’s expression hardened.

“She is family.”

Marco laughed.

“Family?”

He looked around.

“You actually believe that?”

I stepped forward.

But Lorenzo stopped me.

This was his battle.

His brother.

His wound.

“You wanted my life.”

Lorenzo’s voice was quiet.

Marco said nothing.

“You wanted Elena.”

A pause.

“You wanted Leo.”

Another pause.

“And you destroyed everything because you believed you deserved it.”

Marco’s smile disappeared.

“You never understood.”

Lorenzo stared at him.

“Understand what?”

Marco stepped closer.

“You had everything.”

His voice became bitter.

“Respect. Power. Love.”

His eyes darkened.

“And I had nothing.”

I felt something.

Not sympathy.

Something else.

Sadness.

Because Marco had allowed his jealousy to become hatred.

And hatred had destroyed him.

“You had a brother.”

Lorenzo said.

“But you wanted to be me.”

The words hit.

Marco looked away.

Then slowly reached inside his jacket.

Everyone moved instantly.

Guards raised their weapons.

Lorenzo stepped forward.

But Marco did not pull out a gun.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Another secret.

Another piece of the past.

“I didn’t come here to kill you.”

He looked at Lorenzo.

“I came to tell you the truth about Elena.”

The room became silent.

Lorenzo stared.

“What truth?”

Marco looked toward the nursery.

Then back at him.

“The person who ordered the bombing…”

A pause.

“Was not me.”

Nobody moved.

Lorenzo’s face changed.

“Then who?”

Marco’s answer came softly.

And it changed everything.

“The person who wanted Elena and Leo gone…”

“Was your father.”

The entire mansion went silent.

Because the truth they had been chasing…

May you like

was not at the end of the road.

It was only the beginning.
