Chapter 5 - The Secret Behind The Silent Baby

The night Leo’s fever returned was the night I realized something.

Saving a life was only the beginning.

Keeping someone safe was a completely different battle.

The Rossi mansion had always been quiet.

But after the incident at the east entrance, the silence changed.

Before, it was the silence of grief.

Now, it was the silence of fear.

Guards stood at every entrance.

Security cameras watched every hallway.

Every person who entered the property was searched twice.

The mansion had become a fortress again.

Only this time, the enemy was invisible.

And everyone knew that whoever was watching the Rossi family was not finished.

I spent most of the night beside Leo’s crib.

His fever had finally lowered.

The doctors said he was stable.

But I could still feel the tension in the room.

Lorenzo had not left.

Not once.

He stood near the window, staring into the darkness outside.

The city lights reflected against the glass, but his eyes looked somewhere else.

Somewhere far away.

“You should sleep.”

My voice surprised him.

He turned.

For a moment, I saw the old Lorenzo.

The cold man everyone feared.

Then he looked at Leo.

And the mask disappeared.

“I don’t sleep much.”

I looked at him.

“I noticed.”

A faint expression crossed his face.

Almost a smile.

Almost.

“Before Elena died, she used to tell me I worked too much.”

I looked down.

“She sounds like she cared about you.”

“She did.”

The answer came instantly.

No hesitation.

“She was the only person who could tell me I was wrong and make me listen.”

There was pain in his voice.

The kind that never healed.

I understood that pain.

Losing someone was not just losing their presence.

It was losing all the future moments you were supposed to have with them.

The birthdays.

The conversations.

The ordinary days you never realized were precious.

“I used to imagine Leo growing up with her.”

Lorenzo’s voice became quieter.

“I imagined him running through this house. I imagined her teaching him things. I imagined…”

He stopped.

Because some dreams hurt too much to finish.

I looked at Leo.

“He still has a future.”

Lorenzo looked at me.

I continued.

“Maybe it won’t be the future you imagined.”

A pause.

“But it can still be beautiful.”

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he asked:

“Do you believe that?”

The question was not about Leo.

It was about me.

About my daughter.

About everything I had lost.

I looked away.

“I’m trying to.”

That was the truth.

I was still learning how to live in a world where my child did not exist.

Some days were easier.

Some days were impossible.

But seeing Leo fight reminded me that life continued even after the worst moments.

The next morning, Lorenzo called a private meeting.

Everyone important in the Rossi organization was there.

Security chiefs.

Doctors.

Family advisers.

I was not supposed to be inside.

But when Lorenzo arrived, he looked directly at me.

“Clara stays.”

The room became silent.

Several people exchanged surprised looks.

I understood why.

I was a maid.

I had no place at a meeting like this.

But Lorenzo did not care.

“She is involved because Leo is involved.”

Nobody argued.

Nobody dared.

The meeting began.

The security chief placed several photographs on the table.

“We traced the person near the east gate.”

Lorenzo looked at the images.

“And?”

“He wasn’t trying to enter.”

A pause.

“He was leaving a message.”

Everyone became serious.

“What message?”

The man hesitated.

Then he placed another photo on the table.

A symbol.

A mark.

I saw Lorenzo’s face change.

He recognized it.

“What is it?”

I asked quietly.

Nobody answered.

Finally, Lorenzo spoke.

“Someone connected to Elena’s death.”

The room went cold.

I looked at him.

“What?”

Lorenzo stared at the symbol.

“For months, I believed the bombing was meant to punish me.”

His jaw tightened.

“But now…”

He stopped.

The possibility was too painful.

“What if it was never about me?”

Nobody spoke.

The answer was obvious.

Leo.

The attack.

The pregnancy.

The timing.

Everything.

Someone had wanted to destroy the Rossi family before Leo was even born.

And they had almost succeeded.

The meeting ended hours later.

But the questions remained.

Who wanted Elena dead?

Who wanted Leo gone?

And why now?

That afternoon, I found Lorenzo in the nursery.

He was sitting beside Leo’s crib.

No guards.

No meetings.

No powerful businessman.

Just a father.

“You knew something was wrong before I arrived.”

I stopped.

Lorenzo looked at me.

“The night you found Leo.”

I remembered.

The crying.

The empty bottle.

The nurse asleep.

“What do you mean?”

He looked down.

“The doctors told me Leo’s condition was getting worse.”

I stayed silent.

“I thought he was giving up.”

His voice became heavy.

“I thought I was going to lose him too.”

The words carried a pain I could feel.

“But then you walked in.”

I looked at Leo.

“And everything changed.”

I shook my head.

“I didn’t do anything special.”

Lorenzo immediately disagreed.

“You did.”

His eyes met mine.

“You gave him something we couldn’t.”

I looked away.

Because I knew what he meant.

A mother’s warmth.

A mother’s instinct.

Something I never thought would matter again.

Then Leo moved.

Both of us looked down.

His eyes opened.

He looked at me.

Then at Lorenzo.

And something incredible happened.

He reached for both of us.

Not just me.

Both.

Lorenzo froze.

His hand slowly moved forward.

Leo grabbed his finger.

Then he grabbed mine.

And for a moment, the three of us stood connected.

A father.

A child.

A woman who was never supposed to become part of their story.

But life had a strange way of writing stories nobody expected.

Later that evening, Lorenzo asked me something I never imagined hearing.

“Would you stay?”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“Here.”

He glanced toward Leo.

“As Leo’s caretaker.”

I was speechless.

“I’m just a maid.”

“No.”

His answer was immediate.

“You are the person my son trusts.”

I looked down.

“I don’t know if I can do this.”

“Why?”

The question was gentle.

I hesitated.

“Because I lost my own child.”

The room became quiet.

“I don’t know if being close to Leo will make it easier or harder.”

Lorenzo understood.

I could see it.

Because he was afraid of losing too.

“I’m not asking you to replace anyone.”

His voice was calm.

“Not Elena.”

“Not your daughter.”

“You don’t have to forget your pain to help my son.”

Those words stayed with me.

Because maybe that was what I had been doing wrong.

I thought healing meant leaving the past behind.

Maybe healing meant learning how to carry it.

Before I could answer, Lorenzo’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

Immediately.

“What happened?”

He listened.

Then stood.

“Are you sure?”

A pause.

His face became pale.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Terrified.

He ended the call.

I stood.

“What is it?”

For several seconds, Lorenzo said nothing.

Then he looked at Leo.

“The doctor who treated Elena before the accident…”

My heart tightened.

“What about him?”

Lorenzo’s voice dropped.

“He disappeared the same night she died.”

I waited.

“And today, we found him.”

A pause.

“He’s alive.”

The room became still.

“Where?”

Lorenzo looked toward the window.

His eyes were filled with a realization that frightened even him.

“He wants to talk.”

I felt a chill.

“About what?”

Lorenzo looked at me.

And whispered:

“About what really happened the night Elena died.”

At that moment, I understood.

The Rossi family’s tragedy was not an accident.

Leo’s illness was not just bad luck.

And the person behind everything had been hiding for years.

May you like

But now…

the truth was finally coming back.
