Chapter 4 - The Gun Pointed At The Woman Who Saved His Son

The first time Leo reached for me, I thought my heart had stopped.
It was such a small movement.
A tiny hand stretching through the air.
A fragile little gesture from a baby who had spent his entire life refusing to reach for anyone.
But somehow, that small hand carried more meaning than any words could.
I stepped closer to the crib.
Slowly.
Carefully.
As if moving too quickly might scare him away.
“Hi, Leo.”
My voice softened without me realizing it.
The baby’s eyes followed me.
His fingers opened and closed.
Waiting.
I looked at Lorenzo.
He was standing beside me, watching every second.
The man who had once pointed a gun at me was now looking at me like he was trying to understand something impossible.
“How does he know you?”
That was the question everyone wanted answered.
The doctors.
The nurses.
The staff.
Even Lorenzo.
I wished I had an answer.
But the truth was much simpler than anyone wanted to believe.
“I don’t know.”
Lorenzo’s expression tightened slightly.
A part of him still wanted a reason.
Something logical.
Something he could control.
But not everything in life followed rules.
Not everything could be explained by money or power.
Sometimes a child simply knew where he felt safe.
Leo’s tiny fingers wrapped around mine.
And I felt tears forming in my eyes.
Because for a moment, I forgot.
I forgot the mansion.
I forgot the rumors.
I forgot that I was standing beside one of the most feared men in the city.
All I saw was a baby.
A baby who needed love.
A baby who reminded me of the child I never got to raise.
I quickly looked away, hoping nobody noticed.
But Lorenzo did.
He noticed everything.
That was something I would learn about him.
Behind his cold expression was a man who watched every detail.
Every movement.
Every change.
Especially when it involved his son.
“You miss her.”
His voice was quiet.
I looked at him.
I knew exactly who he meant.
“My daughter?”
He nodded.
I swallowed.
“Every day.”
The answer came naturally.
No hesitation.
No shame.
Because missing my daughter was the one thing I refused to apologize for.
Lorenzo looked down.
“I miss my wife.”
The confession surprised me.
Not because he loved Elena.
Everyone knew that.
But because he finally admitted it.
The powerful Lorenzo Rossi.
The man who controlled businesses, security teams, and entire organizations.
Was still a husband who missed his wife.
“She was supposed to be here,” he whispered.
I watched his face.
“She was supposed to see him grow up.”
His voice cracked slightly.
“And I was supposed to protect them.”
There it was.
The guilt.
The thing hiding underneath all the anger.
Lorenzo did not blame the world.
He blamed himself.
“You couldn’t control what happened.”
He looked at me.
People probably rarely spoke to him like that.
“You were not responsible for someone else’s cruelty.”
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then Leo made a small sound.
Both of us immediately looked down.
And something strange happened.
We both smiled.
A real smile.
The first one.
Inside that dark nursery, surrounded by everything the Rossi family had lost, something new was beginning.
But happiness never arrived quietly.
Especially not in a family like the Rossis.
Because the next morning, everything changed again.
I was cleaning the hallway outside the nursery when I heard two guards speaking.
They stopped the moment they saw me.
That alone told me enough.
Something was wrong.
I continued walking, pretending I had not noticed.
But my curiosity got the better of me.
Later that afternoon, I learned the truth.
The Rossi family had enemies.
Many of them.
And someone had been asking questions.
About Leo.
About the doctors.
About the strange improvement in his condition.
About me.
Apparently, people outside the mansion were already suspicious.
A weak baby suddenly improving after months of illness.
A maid becoming the only person who could calm him.
To some people, that was not a miracle.
It was a threat.
That night, Lorenzo increased security.
More guards appeared.
More cameras were installed.
The mansion became even more like a fortress.
And somehow, I felt like I was the reason.
I found Lorenzo in the hallway after midnight.
He was standing outside Leo’s room again.
The same place where I first saw him.
The same place where he had spent countless nights waiting.
“You think this is because of me.”
He looked at me.
It was not a question.
I looked down.
“I understand why people are suspicious.”
“That wasn’t what I asked.”
I was silent.
Lorenzo stepped closer.
“Clara.”
The way he said my name caught me off guard.
Not as an employee.
Not as a stranger.
As a person.
“You are not the danger.”
I looked at him.
“Then why do I feel like I brought trouble here?”
His expression softened.
“Because you’re used to blaming yourself for things you couldn’t control.”
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because he was right.
I had blamed myself for my daughter’s death.
I had blamed myself for staying too long with Daniel.
I had blamed myself for everything.
Lorenzo seemed to understand that.
Maybe because he carried the same burden.
Before I could respond, one of the guards rushed toward us.
“Mr. Rossi.”
His face was serious.
“There’s been a problem.”
Lorenzo immediately changed.
The warmth disappeared.
The businessman returned.
“What happened?”
“The cameras near the east entrance caught someone trying to access the property.”
My heart tightened.
“Did they get inside?”
“No.”
The guard hesitated.
“But they left something.”
Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.
“What?”
The guard handed him an envelope.
No name.
No symbol.
Nothing.
Just a plain white envelope.
Lorenzo opened it carefully.
I watched his face change as he read the message inside.
First anger.
Then fear.
Real fear.
“What is it?”
He looked at me.
For a second, I saw the same man from the nursery.
The father terrified of losing his son.
Then he folded the paper.
“Nothing.”
I knew he was lying.
But before I could ask again, a sound came from inside Leo’s room.
A cry.
Both of us turned instantly.
Lorenzo ran inside.
I followed.
Leo was awake.
But this time, something was wrong.
His breathing was faster.
His little hands moved restlessly.
The nurse checked him immediately.
“His temperature is rising.”
Panic spread through the room.
Doctors arrived within minutes.
The peaceful miracle from the night before suddenly felt fragile.
I stood frozen near the wall.
Watching.
Feeling helpless.
Then something happened.
Leo turned his head.
His eyes found me.
Even while he was struggling.
Even while he was scared.
He reached for me.
The room became silent.
The doctor looked at Lorenzo.
The nurses looked at each other.
And Lorenzo looked at me.
Because everyone understood.
Leo was asking for the one person who made him feel safe.
I stepped forward.
The doctor hesitated.
“Mr. Rossi…”
But Lorenzo lifted his hand.
“Let her.”
Everyone stopped.
Those two words changed everything.
Because for the first time, Lorenzo Rossi trusted someone with the most precious thing in his life.
Me.
I walked to the crib.
I picked Leo up.
And just like before, he calmed.
Slowly.
The monitor steadied.
His breathing relaxed.
But this time, something else happened.
Lorenzo noticed.
He noticed the way Leo held onto me.
The way his son looked at me.
The way his entire body relaxed when I was near.
And I saw something in Lorenzo’s eyes.
Not suspicion.
Not fear.
Something much more complicated.
Gratitude.
But also confusion.
Because saving his son had created a bond neither of us expected.
And bonds were dangerous.
Especially in a world where people used love as a weapon.
That night, Lorenzo Rossi made a decision.
A decision that would change both our lives.
He would find out who was trying to hurt his family.
He would protect Leo.
And he would protect me.
But what neither of us knew…
was that the secret behind Leo’s illness was far darker than anyone imagined.

And the person who had destroyed the Rossi family once before…
was closer than they thought.
