Chapter 6 - The Father Who Learned To Feel Again

The man who knew the truth about Elena Rossi was waiting in an abandoned hospital on the edge of the city.
That was all Lorenzo told me.
No details.
No explanations.
Only one sentence before we left the mansion.
“Stay close to me.”
I knew enough about Lorenzo by then to understand what those words meant.
It was not a command.
It was fear.
For the first time since I met him, Lorenzo Rossi was afraid of what he might discover.
The car ride was silent.
The city passed outside the window, but neither of us paid attention.
Lorenzo sat beside me, staring straight ahead.
His hands were tightly closed.
The same hands that had once held a gun.
The same hands that now gently held Leo every morning.
I had learned something about him.
The world saw a dangerous man.
But I saw someone carrying too much pain for too long.
“Are you sure you want to know?”
I finally asked.
He looked at me.
“What?”
“The truth.”
His expression changed.
“I’ve spent three years wondering what happened that night.”
His voice became quiet.
“I need to know.”
I understood.
Because some wounds never heal until you know what caused them.
The abandoned hospital looked nothing like the luxurious clinics Lorenzo usually used.
The building was old.
Forgotten.
The kind of place where secrets disappeared.
Two guards walked ahead of us.
Lorenzo stayed beside me.
When we reached the third floor, we found him.
Dr. Adrian Cole.
The man who had treated Elena during her pregnancy.
The man who had disappeared the night she died.
He looked nothing like the doctor I imagined.
He was older.
Tired.
Broken.
A man who had spent years running from something.
When he saw Lorenzo, fear immediately crossed his face.
“You came.”
Lorenzo stepped forward.
“You know why I’m here.”
The doctor looked at him.
Then at me.
His eyes narrowed.
“Who is she?”
Before Lorenzo could answer, I spoke.
“Someone who saved his son.”
The doctor looked surprised.
Then he looked away.
“Leo survived?”
The question was strange.
Not surprised.
Almost relieved.
Lorenzo noticed.
“You knew he might not?”
Silence.
The doctor closed his eyes.
“I knew something was wrong.”
The room became colder.
Lorenzo’s voice hardened.
“Explain.”
Dr. Cole looked at him.
“The night Elena died was not an accident.”
I watched Lorenzo’s face.
Even though he already suspected it, hearing the words still hurt.
“Who did it?”
The doctor hesitated.
“I don’t know the person who ordered it.”
Lorenzo stepped closer.
“But you know something.”
The doctor looked down.
“Yes.”
A long pause.
“I know Elena was supposed to survive.”
Everything stopped.
Lorenzo froze.
“What?”
The doctor swallowed.
“The bombing was designed to scare you. To hurt your family. But Elena’s condition was not supposed to become fatal.”
My heart tightened.
“Then why did she die?”
The doctor looked at Lorenzo.
“Because someone inside the medical team made sure she wouldn’t survive.”
The silence after those words felt unbearable.
Lorenzo’s expression changed completely.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Shock.
“You’re saying someone killed my wife in the hospital?”
The doctor nodded slowly.
“I found signs of medication interference.”
Lorenzo’s breathing became heavier.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
The doctor looked ashamed.
“Because I was threatened.”
A bitter laugh escaped him.
“I had a family too.”
For the first time, I saw Lorenzo understand.
Not forgive.
But understand.
Fear could make people weak.
Fear could make good people make terrible choices.
“Who threatened you?”
The doctor looked at the floor.
“I never saw his face.”
Lorenzo’s eyes darkened.
“But?”
The doctor reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this.”
He handed it over.
“I knew one day someone would come looking for the truth.”
Lorenzo opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A man standing beside Elena’s hospital room.
My eyes moved to Lorenzo.
His face had lost all color.
Because he recognized the person.
“Who is that?”
I asked.
Lorenzo said nothing.
The doctor answered.
“Someone close to the Rossi family.”
The words felt like a warning.
Lorenzo stared at the picture.
Then suddenly, he crushed it in his hand.
“No.”
His voice was barely audible.
“It can’t be.”
I had never seen him like that.
Not when the gun was in his hand.
Not when he thought someone hurt his son.
This was different.
This was betrayal.
The kind that came from someone you trusted.
“Who is it?”
I asked again.
Slowly, Lorenzo looked at me.
“My brother.”
The air disappeared from the room.
“Marco?”
I remembered hearing the name before.
Lorenzo’s younger brother.
A man who worked closely with him.
A man who had been around the family after Elena died.
A man who had comforted Lorenzo during the darkest period of his life.
The same man who had probably known every weakness Lorenzo had.
“No.”
Lorenzo shook his head.
“He loved Elena.”
The doctor looked at him sadly.
“Maybe.”
A pause.
“But he wanted what she gave you.”
Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.
“What?”
“Power.”
The word hung in the air.
“Your wife was the only person who could make you question your decisions. She was the only person who could influence you.”
The doctor looked at the photograph.
“And Leo was your future.”
I felt a chill.
Because suddenly everything connected.
The bombing.
Elena’s death.
Leo’s illness.
The fear.
The secrets.
Someone had not just wanted to hurt Lorenzo.
Someone wanted to erase his family.
The drive back to the mansion was different.
Lorenzo did not speak.
He stared out the window.
I wondered what was happening inside his mind.
Finding out your enemy was a stranger was painful.
Finding out your enemy was family was something else.
When we arrived home, Lorenzo went directly to Leo’s room.
I followed.
The baby was awake.
The moment he saw us, his eyes moved toward Lorenzo.
And something unexpected happened.
Leo smiled.
A tiny smile.
Barely there.
But real.
Lorenzo stopped.
The same man who had faced enemies without fear looked completely destroyed by that small smile.
He walked closer.
Slowly.
“Hey, little one.”
His voice cracked.
“I’m here.”
Leo grabbed his finger.
And Lorenzo closed his eyes.
A tear escaped.
I looked away.
It felt too personal.
Too private.
But maybe that was the moment everything changed.
Because Lorenzo Rossi finally understood something.
He could spend his entire life hunting the person who destroyed his family.
He could spend years seeking revenge.
But none of that would bring Elena back.
The only thing he could do…
was protect the family he still had.
Later that night, I found him sitting outside Leo’s room.
The same place where I had seen him before.
Only this time, he looked different.
“You should sleep.”
He smiled faintly.
“You always say that.”
“Because you never listen.”
For a moment, we were quiet.
Then Lorenzo spoke.
“Before Elena died, I thought being strong meant never needing anyone.”
I listened.
“I thought emotions made people weak.”
He looked through the nursery window.
“But then I lost her.”
His voice lowered.
“And I became the weakest person alive.”
I understood.
Because grief had a strange way of changing people.
Some became louder.
Some became colder.
Some disappeared inside themselves.
“I was so focused on protecting Leo from losing his mother…”
He looked at me.
“I forgot he also needed a father.”
Those words stayed with me.
Because they were true.
Leo did not need a perfect man.
He needed Lorenzo.
The real Lorenzo.
Not the feared one.
Not the powerful one.
Just his father.
“Thank you.”
I looked at him.
“For what?”
“For reminding me my son is still here.”
I did not know what to say.
So I simply nodded.
The next morning, something happened that none of us expected.
Leo’s condition continued improving.
The doctors were amazed.
The nurses were amazed.
But Lorenzo was no longer focused only on Leo’s health.
He was focused on the danger approaching.
Because now he knew.
The person who had tried to destroy his family was not gone.
He was inside their world.
Inside their trust.

And while Lorenzo Rossi had finally learned how to love again…
someone else was preparing to take that love away.
