Chapter 7 - The Father Behind The Disappearance

The basement camera flickered.
A man's face appeared on the screen.
Clara stopped breathing.
Because she had seen that face before.
Not in a photograph.
Not in a memory.
In her dreams.
The emergency room remained silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The man on the screen looked older than the image Clara had seen in the photograph.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
A face carrying years of regret.
But she knew him.
Somewhere deep inside her mind...
she knew him.
"No."
The word escaped her mouth.
Luca looked at her.
"Clara?"
She stepped closer to the monitor.
Her hands trembled.
"I don't understand."
Michael watched her carefully.
"You remember him."
Clara shook her head.
"I don't."
But her voice sounded uncertain.
Because she did remember something.
A hand holding hers.
A voice telling her not to cry.
A man promising he would come back.
Memories she had buried so deeply that she thought they belonged to someone else.
Michael looked at the screen.
"That's your father."
Clara stared.
"What's his name?"
Nobody answered.
That silence told her more than words could.
Luca looked away.
Like he was afraid of what would happen next.
Clara turned toward him.
"You know."
Luca remained quiet.
"You know his name."
Finally, he spoke.
"Daniel Jenkins."
The name felt strange.
Yet familiar.
Clara repeated it softly.
"Daniel..."
Michael nodded.
"He wasn't just your father."
Clara looked at him.
"What else was he?"
Michael looked toward the basement camera.
"He was the person who built the system everyone is trying to hide."
The room became cold.
Clara looked confused.
"My father was responsible?"
Michael shook his head.
"No."
A pause.
"He built it to expose them."
Luca stepped forward.
"Then why did he disappear?"
Michael looked at him.
"Because he found out someone close to him was working with them."
Clara felt her stomach tighten.
"Who?"
Michael didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at Elena.
Everyone followed his gaze.
Elena stood silently near the doorway.
For the first time since Clara had met her, she looked nervous.
Clara noticed.
"You know."
Elena didn't respond.
"You know who betrayed my father."
Elena looked down.
"I know who betrayed all of us."
The words shocked everyone.
Luca stepped toward her.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Elena looked at him.
"Because if I told you eight years ago, you would have died too."
Luca's expression hardened.
"Who was it?"
Elena looked at Clara.
Then whispered:
"Someone you trusted."
The sentence stayed in the air.
Clara felt anger building.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
She looked around.
"Someone lied."
"Someone disappeared."
"Someone died."
"And somehow nobody can say the name."
Michael walked toward the monitor.
"Because saying the name means accepting what happened."
Clara looked at him.
"Then accept it."
Michael stared at the basement image.
"The person who betrayed your father was the person who helped raise you."
Clara froze.
Her face changed.
"No."
Michael didn't look away.
"Clara."
"No."
She shook her head.
"My family..."
Her voice broke.
"My family was normal."
Michael looked at her sadly.
"That's what they wanted you to believe."
Suddenly, the basement camera moved.
The image changed.
The person controlling the camera walked closer.
Everyone watched.
A figure appeared in the basement.
Holding a folder.
The face was hidden.
But the person stopped in front of the camera.
Then placed the folder on the table.
Michael immediately recognized it.
"No."
Luca looked at him.
"What?"
Michael's expression changed.
"That file."
Clara looked at the screen.
"What about it?"
Michael whispered:
"That's the original identity file."
The same file that had been erased.
The same file that could reveal everything.
The figure opened it.
Slowly.
Then removed a document.
The camera zoomed closer.
A signature appeared.
Clara stared.
Because the signature belonged to someone she knew.
Someone she had trusted.
Someone who had been beside her her entire life.
Her hands became cold.
"No..."
Luca looked at her.
"Clara."
She couldn't speak.
Because the signature wasn't from Arthur.
It wasn't from a stranger.
It was from someone she loved.
The basement camera suddenly shut off.
The emergency lights turned red.
A security guard rushed into the trauma room.
"Mr. Moretti."
Luca turned.
"What happened?"
The guard looked terrified.
"Someone entered the hospital records room."
Michael immediately stood up.
"Who?"
The guard hesitated.
Then handed Luca a small piece of paper.
"She left this."
Luca opened it.
His face changed.
Clara noticed.
"What does it say?"
Luca didn't answer.
He handed the paper to her.
Only four words were written.
"Ask your mother why."
Clara looked up.
Sarah.
Her mother.
She turned toward the doorway.
Because Sarah was supposed to be gone.
But then...
a sound came from the hallway.
A familiar voice.
"Clara."
Everyone froze.
Sarah stood at the end of the corridor.
But she wasn't alone.
A man was standing behind her.
Older.
Calm.
Holding a gun.
Clara looked at his face.

And Sarah whispered:
"Your father is here."
