Chapter 5 - The Mother Who Was Erased From History

The woman standing outside the emergency room took one step forward.

"Clara, please..."

Clara stared at her.

Because that voice had lived inside her dreams for years.

And the woman holding the old photograph was the person Clara had spent her entire life mourning.

Nobody spoke.

The emergency room that had been filled with alarms and shouting suddenly felt completely silent.

Clara looked at the woman.

Then at Luca.

Then at Elena.

Everyone seemed to know something except her.

The woman slowly lowered the photograph in her hand.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I know you don't remember me."

Clara couldn't answer.

Her mind was moving too fast.

A mother.

A hidden identity.

A recording.

A photograph from twenty years ago.

None of it made sense.

"You died."

The words finally came out of Clara's mouth.

The woman's face broke.

"I know."

Clara felt her chest tighten.

"No."

She shook her head.

"My mother died when I was a child."

The woman stepped closer.

"I was told you were gone."

The room went still.

Clara frowned.

"What?"

The woman looked at Luca.

Then at Thomas.

Then finally back at Clara.

"Someone wanted us both to believe that."

Luca moved closer.

"Who are you?"

The woman hesitated.

Then she answered.

"My name is Sarah Jenkins."

Clara froze.

The same last name.

The same name written on her hospital records.

But something was different.

Something felt wrong.

Because Clara had spent years searching for information about her family.

She had found a death certificate.

She had found records.

She had found a grave.

Everything said Sarah Jenkins was dead.

Sarah looked at her.

"Your father wasn't who you thought he was."

Clara's expression changed.

"I don't have a father."

Sarah looked down.

"That's what they wanted you to believe."

The words hit harder than anything else.

Clara turned away.

She needed space.

She needed air.

She had spent her whole life believing her past was simple.

A normal childhood.

A tragic loss.

A lonely future.

Now every memory felt like a question.

Luca noticed her shaking hands.

"Clara."

She looked at him.

"Don't."

Her voice was quiet.

"I can't keep hearing secrets."

For the first time, Luca didn't have an answer.

Because she was right.

Everyone had been protecting information from her.

Everyone had decided what she could handle.

But nobody had asked what she wanted to know.

Sarah stepped closer.

"I never stopped looking for you."

Clara looked at her.

"Then why didn't you find me?"

Sarah closed her eyes.

"Because every time I got close, someone moved you."

The room became colder.

"Moved me?"

Sarah nodded.

"They changed your records."

"They changed your address."

"They changed your entire history."

Clara looked at Thomas.

"Who?"

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

Like saying the name would open something that couldn't be closed.

Sarah answered for him.

"The people who controlled this hospital."

Clara turned toward Arthur's empty chair.

"But Arthur?"

Sarah shook her head.

"No."

A pause.

"Arthur was just someone who wanted power."

"Whoever did this was much higher."

Luca's expression darkened.

"Someone above the hospital."

Sarah looked at him.

"Someone above everyone."

Nobody spoke.

Then Thomas walked toward the table.

He placed another document beside the photograph.

"This was found in the old hospital archives."

Clara looked down.

A patient record.

Old.

Yellowed.

The name on the top was covered.

But underneath the black marker, she could see letters.

C.

J.

She looked at Thomas.

"What is this?"

"Your original medical file."

Clara opened it carefully.

The first page contained information about a child admitted to the hospital.

Female.

Age: six years old.

Unknown identity.

Unknown parents.

But the final line made Clara stop.

"Patient transferred under protection order."

Her hands became cold.

"Protection order?"

Luca looked at the paper.

"Who signed it?"

Thomas remained silent.

Clara looked up.

"Who signed it?"

Thomas slowly pointed to the bottom.

There was a signature.

A name.

Clara stared.

Because she recognized it.

Not from her childhood.

Not from family.

From the hospital.

Dr. Arthur Hemlock.

Her breath caught.

"Arthur?"

Luca took the document.

His eyes narrowed.

"That means he knew about you."

Sarah nodded.

"He always knew."

Clara felt anger replacing fear.

"Then why did he pretend not to know me?"

Sarah looked at her sadly.

"Because he wasn't supposed to let you remember."

The sentence made Clara freeze.

"Remember what?"

Nobody answered.

Again.

Another secret.

Another missing piece.

She slammed the file onto the table.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

"I am done."

Her voice shook.

"But I'm done being the person everyone protects by lying to."

Luca watched her.

And Clara noticed something.

He wasn't looking at her like someone fragile anymore.

He was looking at her like someone finally seeing her strength.

She turned toward Sarah.

"If you are my mother..."

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

"Then tell me everything."

Sarah took a deep breath.

"I will."

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out an old video recorder.

Clara stared.

"What is that?"

"Something I kept hidden for twenty years."

Sarah placed it on the table.

"It contains the truth about what happened the night you disappeared."

Luca immediately became serious.

"Where did you get that?"

Sarah looked at him.

"From the person who saved Clara's life."

Thomas stepped forward.

"Who?"

Sarah looked down.

Then whispered:

"Your brother."

The room went silent.

Luca's face changed.

"My brother died."

Sarah shook her head.

"No."

Her voice was barely audible.

"He didn't die."

Luca stepped back.

Every emotion crossed his face at once.

Anger.

Shock.

Pain.

"That's impossible."

Sarah looked at him.

"That is exactly what they wanted you to believe."

Clara looked between them.

Another person.

Another death that wasn't real.

Another lie.

Luca stared at the video recorder.

"Play it."

Sarah hesitated.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

"Not here."

"Why?"

Sarah looked toward the security cameras.

Her expression changed.

"Because they are already watching."

Clara looked up.

The cameras above the trauma room.

The same cameras that had gone offline earlier.

One of them suddenly moved.

Slowly.

Turning toward Clara.

Nobody touched the controls.

Nobody spoke.

Then the screen above the emergency entrance turned on.

A live video appeared.

The hospital hallway.

A person walking.

Carrying a gun.

Clara couldn't see the face.

But Luca immediately recognized the way the person moved.

His voice became a whisper.

"Run."

Clara looked at him.

"Who is it?"

Luca didn't answer.

Because the person on the screen stopped outside the trauma room.

Then raised the gun toward the camera.

And the hospital speakers suddenly turned on.

A man's voice echoed through the room.

"Clara Jenkins."

A pause.

"I finally found you."

May you like

The trauma room lights went out.

And when they came back on, Sarah was gone.
