Chapter 8 - The Mother Who Came Back From The Dead

Emma Bennett forgot how to breathe.

For years, she had imagined this moment.

Not exactly.

Not like this.

She had imagined finding an old letter.

A forgotten photograph.

A stranger showing up with answers.

She had imagined many impossible things.

But she had never imagined standing inside a mansion owned by Adrien Moretti, surrounded by secrets and danger, while the woman she buried in her heart walked through the gates and said her name.

“Emma.”

That voice.

Older.

Softer.

But still hers.

Emma stared at the woman standing in front of her.

The same eyes.

The same small scar near her eyebrow.

The same expression she remembered from childhood whenever Emma was sick and her mother stayed awake all night beside her bed.

Her brain told her this was impossible.

Her heart did not care.

“Mom?”

The word barely left her mouth.

The woman’s face broke.

A mixture of pain and relief crossed her features.

“Yes.”

Emma felt something inside her collapse.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like a wall she had spent years building suddenly disappeared.

She wanted to run forward.

She wanted to hug her.

She wanted to scream.

Instead, she stood frozen.

Because there was one question louder than everything else.

“Why?”

Her mother looked down.

And that hurt more than any answer could have.

Because Emma had spent years imagining her mother’s return.

In every version, there was always an explanation.

A reason.

A justification.

But standing here, seeing the sadness on her face, Emma realized something.

Her mother had not stayed away because she forgot her.

She stayed away because something had forced her to.

And somehow, that made it hurt even more.

“You’re alive.”

Emma’s voice shook.

Her mother nodded.

“Yes.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

Tears formed in her mother’s eyes.

“I know.”

“You let me grow up thinking you left me.”

“I know.”

Emma laughed bitterly.

The sound surprised everyone.

“You know?”

She stepped forward.

“Do you know what it was like?”

Her mother looked down.

“Emma—”

“No.”

Her voice became stronger.

“You don’t get to say my name like nothing happened.”

Silence filled the room.

Adrien stood nearby.

For once, he did not interrupt.

He understood.

This moment did not belong to him.

“You were gone.”

Emma’s eyes filled.

“I was nineteen years old.”

Her voice cracked.

“I had Lucas. I had school. I had bills. I had no idea what happened to you.”

Her mother covered her mouth.

“I thought you abandoned me.”

That sentence hurt the most.

Because it was the truth.

A mother could survive anger.

But hearing that her child believed she was unwanted was something else.

“I never abandoned you.”

Emma looked at her.

“Then why?”

Her mother took a slow breath.

“Because staying would have gotten you killed.”

The answer silenced her.

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You don’t get to decide that.”

“I did because I was your mother.”

“And I was your daughter.”

The words landed heavily.

Her mother closed her eyes.

“I know.”

A long silence followed.

Then Adrien finally spoke.

“We need to move this conversation somewhere safer.”

Emma looked at him.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

She wiped her tears.

“No more moving. No more secrets. No more people deciding what I can handle.”

Adrien held her gaze.

And this time, he did not argue.

Because he knew she was right.

Her mother looked at Adrien.

“You kept your promise.”

The sentence changed the atmosphere.

Emma noticed immediately.

Her mother and Adrien shared something deeper than she understood.

“You knew?”

Emma looked between them.

“You knew he was protecting me?”

Her mother nodded.

“I asked him to.”

The answer shocked her.

“You asked him?”

“Yes.”

“Why him?”

Her mother looked at Adrien.

And the expression on her face was not fear.

It was trust.

“Because Adrien was the only person I believed would choose you over power.”

Emma looked at him.

The man everyone feared.

The man who controlled businesses, people, and information.

The man who seemed impossible to reach.

Her mother trusted him.

“Tell her everything.”

Adrien looked at her mother.

A moment passed.

Then he nodded.

Everyone moved to the living room.

For the first time, Emma saw Adrien without control.

Not because he was weak.

Because he was allowing the truth to exist.

Her mother sat across from Emma.

“My name is not important anymore.”

Emma frowned.

“What?”

“The person I was before that night is gone.”

She looked at Adrien.

“But you deserve to know what happened.”

Emma waited.

“Your father was involved with people like Adrien.”

Emma froze.

“My father?”

She had almost forgotten about him.

A man who disappeared from her life years ago.

A man her mother rarely spoke about.

“Yes.”

Her mother continued.

“He discovered information about Duca’s organization.”

Adrien added quietly:

“And he tried to expose it.”

Emma looked at him.

“You knew my father too?”

“Yes.”

“How many people in this room knew my family better than me?”

The question hurt everyone.

Her mother looked down.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma swallowed.

“Keep going.”

Her mother continued.

“Your father’s discovery put us in danger. When Duca realized what we knew, we had to disappear.”

“You disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“And left me.”

A tear fell down her mother’s face.

“I stayed away because every person looking for me would eventually look for you.”

Emma looked away.

She wanted to understand.

She really did.

But understanding did not erase pain.

Adrien spoke.

“That night, your mother was supposed to leave with my help.”

Emma looked at him.

“But someone betrayed you.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Nobody answered.

Because they still did not know.

Her mother reached into her bag and pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this for you.”

Emma took it.

Inside was an old necklace.

A necklace she remembered.

Her mother had worn it every day when Emma was little.

Attached was a small piece of paper.

Emma unfolded it.

Only one sentence was written.

The person who destroyed our family was someone we trusted completely.

Her heart sank.

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

She looked up.

“Who?”

Her mother looked at Adrien.

Adrien looked at the floor.

Then the room shook.

A loud explosion came from outside.

Everyone immediately reacted.

Guards moved.

Lights flickered.

Adrien stood.

The calm man returned.

But Emma saw something different now.

She knew him.

Not completely.

But enough.

Enough to understand that his first instinct was always protection.

“Stay here.”

Emma stood too.

“No.”

Adrien looked at her.

“This is dangerous.”

“I know.”

“You need to stay safe.”

She shook her head.

“I spent my entire life being kept away from the truth.”

A pause.

“I’m done hiding.”

For several seconds, Adrien looked at her.

Then he nodded.

Not because he wanted her involved.

Because he respected her choice.

Outside, voices shouted.

The gates were under attack.

A guard rushed inside.

“Mr. Moretti.”

Adrien turned.

“What?”

The guard’s face was pale.

“We found the attackers.”

“Who?”

The guard hesitated.

Then:

“They weren’t Duca’s men.”

Everyone became silent.

“Then who were they?”

The guard looked at Emma.

“They were carrying old photographs.”

Adrien frowned.

“What photographs?”

The guard swallowed.

“Pictures of Emma’s family.”

The room went cold.

Because everyone understood.

This was not an attack.

It was a message.

Someone wanted Emma to know they were watching.

Someone wanted her to understand that hiding was no longer possible.

Adrien looked at the woman who had returned after years away.

Then at Emma.

And finally toward the darkness outside.

Because after all the secrets had been revealed...

One question remained.

May you like

Who had been controlling everything from the beginning?

And why did they need Emma Bennett alive?
