Chapter 5 - The Enemy Living Behind The Door

Emma Bennett learned something important about powerful people.
They were not afraid of enemies.
They were afraid of the people standing closest to them.
Because enemies were simple.
You knew where they stood.
You knew what they wanted.
You knew they were waiting for the moment to hurt you.
But betrayal was different.
Betrayal came with a familiar face.
A trusted voice.
A hand placed on your shoulder while another one prepared the knife.
And now Adrien Moretti was looking at everyone around him differently.
Emma noticed it immediately.
The house had changed.
The same guards stood outside.
The same quiet movements happened through the halls.
The same expensive furniture filled the rooms.
But the feeling was different.
Before, the danger had been outside the gates.
Now, Emma realized, everyone inside the house was a possibility.
Adrien sat in his private office, staring at the security footage displayed across multiple screens.
Emma stood near the doorway.
She had not been invited inside.
But she had not been asked to leave either.
And somehow, she felt that was worse.
“You think I should go.”
Adrien did not look away from the screens.
“No.”
The answer surprised her.
“You’re not even going to pretend this isn’t dangerous?”
“It is dangerous.”
“Then why keep me here?”
His eyes moved toward her.
“Because leaving does not make you safe.”
Emma crossed her arms.
“That’s a terrifying answer.”
“It is also the truth.”
She hated that he was always honest at the exact moments she wanted him to lie.
“Who are you looking for?”
Adrien turned back to the screens.
“Someone who had access.”
“To what?”
“My movements.”
Emma frowned.
“Your schedule?”
“Yes.”
“Your security?”
“Yes.”
“Your personal information?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
She understood.
Anyone could have sent those men.
But someone close to Adrien had made it easier.
Someone knew where he was.
Someone knew when he was vulnerable.
Someone knew Emma mattered before she even understood why.
“How many people have that kind of access?”
Adrien remained silent.
Emma noticed.
“Too many?”
“Too many.”
The answer was quiet.
The office door opened.
A man entered.
Emma recognized him from the previous night.
Tall.
Early forties.
Sharp expression.
He carried himself like someone who had spent years standing beside dangerous people.
“Mr. Moretti.”
Adrien nodded.
“What did you find?”
The man glanced at Emma.
A brief moment.
But she noticed.
He was judging her.
Not cruelly.
Carefully.
“Everything points toward an internal leak.”
Adrien’s face remained still.
“Names.”
The man placed a folder on the desk.
“We are checking everyone.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
A pause.
Then:
“Three possibilities.”
Emma watched Adrien open the folder.
The first page contained photographs.
Men.
Names.
Information.
People who looked ordinary.
That was the terrifying part.
Danger rarely looked dangerous.
The man pointed.
“Daniel Russo. Security operations.”
He moved to the next.
“Victor Hale. Financial management.”
Then the third.
“Matteo Bellini.”
Emma’s eyes stopped.
Bellini.
The restaurant.
Adrien noticed.
“You know him?”
“No.”
She shook her head quickly.
“But the name.”
“What about it?”
“It’s the restaurant owner.”
The room became quiet.
The man looked at Adrien.
Adrien’s expression changed slightly.
Not surprise.
Calculation.
“Matteo Bellini owns the restaurant where you worked?”
Emma nodded.
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Almost three years.”
“And he never mentioned knowing me?”
Emma looked confused.
“No.”
Adrien leaned back.
That bothered him.
“Why?”
“What?”
“Because Matteo Bellini does not open businesses in places he cannot control.”
Emma felt uncomfortable.
“He was always nice to me.”
Adrien looked at her.
“That does not mean he was honest.”
The sentence hurt.
Because Emma wanted to disagree.
She wanted to defend someone familiar.
Someone from her normal life.
But she remembered something.
The private dining room.
The locked door.
The voices.
The conversation.
And the fact that she had never once wondered why a restaurant owner had private meetings with powerful men.
Her normal life had contained secrets too.
She just had not known it.
Later that afternoon, Emma sat in the kitchen with Lucas.
The house staff had prepared lunch.
Real food.
Not the quick meals she usually made after exhausting shifts.
Lucas looked around curiously.
“Does he live here alone?”
Emma glanced toward the hallway.
“Who?”
“The scary man.”
She almost smiled.
“Adrien?”
Lucas nodded.
“He doesn’t smile.”
Emma looked down.
“That’s true.”
“Why?”
She thought about it.
“I don’t know.”
Lucas picked up his sandwich.
“Maybe he forgot how.”
The simple answer made her pause.
Children saw things adults ignored.
Maybe Adrien had not forgotten.
Maybe he had just stopped having reasons to.
A shadow appeared near the doorway.
Adrien.
He had heard.
Lucas looked up.
“You heard that?”
Adrien nodded.
“Yes.”
“Did you forget how?”
Emma expected him to ignore the question.
Instead, Adrien walked closer.
“I’m not sure.”
Lucas studied him.
“You should practice.”
Emma covered her mouth, trying not to laugh.
Adrien looked genuinely confused.
“Practice?”
“Yeah.”
Lucas nodded seriously.
“Smiling.”
For the first time...
Emma saw it.
A tiny change.
Barely there.
But real.
The corner of Adrien’s mouth moved.
A small smile.
Gone almost instantly.
Lucas pointed.
“You did it.”
Adrien looked at Emma.
And Emma realized something dangerous.
She had just seen a part of him nobody else probably saw.
Not the businessman.
Not the feared man.
Just Adrien.
A person.
That night, the truth arrived.
And it arrived with a gunshot.
Emma woke up to alarms.
The entire house came alive.
Lights turned on.
Footsteps moved quickly.
Lucas appeared in the hallway, terrified.
Emma immediately grabbed him.
“Stay with me.”
Adrien appeared seconds later.
No panic.
No hesitation.
Only focus.
“Take Lucas downstairs.”
Emma looked at him.
“What happened?”
A security guard appeared.
“Someone breached the east gate.”
Adrien’s expression darkened.
“How?”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew.
The only people who could enter that way were people with access.
The enemy was not outside.
It was inside.
Adrien looked at his security team.
“Lock everything down.”
Then his eyes moved toward Emma.
“Stay with him.”
She nodded.
But before she moved, she noticed something.
A man standing near the hallway.
Someone from earlier.
Someone who had been inside the house all day.
Matteo Bellini.
Emma froze.
“What are you doing here?”
Everyone turned.
Bellini looked at her.
Then at Adrien.
And something in his expression changed.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Adrien noticed too.
His hand moved slightly.
A silent warning.
“Matteo.”
The restaurant owner smiled sadly.
“Adrien.”
Emma felt her stomach drop.
They knew each other.
Not casually.
Not professionally.
Personally.
“You lied to me,” Adrien said.
Bellini sighed.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“No.”
Adrien’s voice became colder.
“You were protecting yourself.”
The alarms continued screaming.
And then Bellini said the one thing Emma never expected.
“The people coming here tonight are not after you.”
He looked at Emma.
“They are after her.”
Silence.
Adrien stepped forward.
“No.”
Bellini shook his head.
“You still don’t understand.”
His eyes moved toward Emma.
“She is not a witness.”
Emma felt cold.
“Then what am I?”
Bellini’s expression changed.
A mixture of pity and fear.
“You are the reason this war started.”
Nobody spoke.
Adrien stared at him.
“Explain.”
But before Bellini could answer...
The power went out.
The house disappeared into darkness.
And somewhere outside the gates...
Someone whispered Emma Bennett’s name.
Not as a target.
May you like
Not as a witness.
But as the person everyone had been searching for.
