Chapter 7 - The Night Adrien Moretti Told The Truth

Emma Bennett stared at the sentence for what felt like an eternity.
Ask Adrien why he never told you he was there the night your mother disappeared.
The paper trembled slightly between her fingers.
Not because she was afraid.
Because suddenly every unanswered question from her childhood had found a door.
And behind that door was Adrien Moretti.
The man who had protected her.
The man who had lied to her.
The man who had known her mother.
Emma slowly lifted her eyes.
Adrien was still standing near the table.
He did not try to explain.
That hurt more than anything.
Because a person who was innocent usually rushed to defend themselves.
Adrien did not.
He simply stood there, accepting the weight of the accusation.
“How long?”
Her voice was quiet.
Everyone in the room became still.
Adrien looked at her.
“Emma—”
“How long did you know?”
A long silence.
Then:
“Since before you knew my name.”
The answer hit harder than she expected.
She stepped backward.
“So everything?”
“No.”
“You knew who I was when I worked at Bellini’s.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my mother.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I was connected to this entire situation.”
“Yes.”
Each answer felt like another piece of trust breaking.
Emma looked away.
She felt foolish.
She had spent the last few days defending him in her own mind.
Telling herself he was different.
Telling herself that maybe the dangerous man everyone feared had a reason.
But he had still kept the biggest secret from her.
“You had so many chances.”
Adrien did not move.
“You could have told me in the garage.”
Silence.
“You could have told me when you brought Lucas here.”
Another silence.
“You could have told me when I asked why you cared.”
His expression changed.
Just slightly.
Because that one hurt.
Emma noticed.
Good.
He deserved to feel something.
“Why didn’t you?”
Adrien looked down.
For the first time, he seemed unsure.
Not because he did not know the answer.
Because he knew it too well.
“Because I knew what you would think.”
Emma laughed softly.
“What?”
“That I was responsible.”
The room became quiet.
Emma looked at him.
“Were you?”
Adrien did not answer immediately.
And that was enough.
Her heart sank.
“You were.”
“No.”
The answer came quickly.
But not defensively.
“I was there.”
Emma waited.
“Your mother called me that night.”
The words made the entire room disappear.
“She knew she was in danger.”
Adrien looked at the photograph in Emma’s hand.
“She had discovered what Duca was planning.”
“What was he planning?”
“To take control of everything.”
Adrien’s jaw tightened.
“Not just businesses. Not just territory.”
A pause.
“People.”
Emma listened.
“Your mother found evidence that someone inside Duca’s organization was selling information. Names. Locations. Families.”
“Why did she tell you?”
“Because she trusted me.”
The answer was immediate.
Too immediate.
Emma believed him.
That was the worst part.
“She asked me to protect you.”
Emma looked down.
“Then why didn’t you?”
Adrien closed his eyes for a moment.
A rare crack in his control.
“Because I failed.”
Nobody spoke.
Even Bellini looked away.
Adrien continued.
“I arrived too late.”
Emma felt her anger weaken.
Not disappear.
But change.
“What happened?”
Adrien looked toward the dark windows.
“It was raining.”
A small detail.
A meaningless detail.
Except Emma knew people remembered meaningless things when something destroyed them.
“She was supposed to leave the city that night.”
His voice became quieter.
“She had everything prepared.”
“The person who helped her?”
“Me.”
Emma swallowed.
“You were helping her escape?”
“Yes.”
“Then what happened?”
Adrien looked at her.
“Someone betrayed us.”
The words echoed.
Again.
Betrayal.
The same poison that had followed them into the present.
“Who?”
Adrien shook his head.
“I never found out.”
Emma stared.
“You’re telling me you, Adrien Moretti, never found out who betrayed you?”
“Yes.”
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“No.”
His voice was low.
“That is why it has haunted me for years.”
Emma looked at the photograph.
Her mother smiling.
A younger Adrien standing beside her.
Two people who had trusted each other.
Two people who had lost everything.
“What happened to her?”
Adrien looked away.
“I don’t know.”
The answer surprised Emma.
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
“You thought she was dead?”
A pause.
“I thought she was.”
The room froze.
Emma’s eyes widened.
“What does that mean?”
Before Adrien could answer, the lights suddenly returned.
The mansion came back to life.
But nobody moved.
Because the truth had already changed everything.
A guard entered quickly.
“Mr. Moretti.”
Adrien turned.
“We found something.”
“What?”
The guard looked uncomfortable.
“A vehicle outside the property.”
Emma immediately felt cold.
“Duca?”
The guard shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Adrien.
“It belongs to Matteo Bellini.”
Everyone turned.
Bellini went pale.
“What?”
The guard continued.
“We found it near the east road.”
Adrien’s eyes narrowed.
“You said you stayed inside.”
Bellini looked confused.
“I did.”
The room became tense.
Because suddenly everyone had another question.
Who was lying?
Emma looked between them.
A terrifying realization entered her mind.
They were searching for a traitor.
But maybe they had been looking at the wrong person.
Adrien stepped toward Bellini.
“Where were you two hours ago?”
Bellini hesitated.
A mistake.
A small one.
But Adrien noticed.
“I…”
Emma watched the two men.
The restaurant owner who had protected her for years.
The man who promised her mother he would watch over her.
And Adrien.
The man who carried her mother’s final secret.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
Everyone had something to lose.
Then Bellini finally spoke.
“I went to meet someone.”
Adrien’s expression hardened.
“Who?”
Bellini looked at Emma.
And that frightened her.
Because his answer was not about Adrien.
It was about her.
“Your mother.”
The room went completely silent.
Emma felt the floor disappear beneath her.
“What did you say?”
Bellini’s eyes filled with regret.
“She’s alive.”
No one breathed.
No one moved.
Adrien stared at him.
“That’s impossible.”
Bellini shook his head.
“I thought so too.”
Emma’s hands became cold.
Her mother.
Alive.
After all these years.
The woman she had mourned.
The woman she believed had abandoned her.
Alive.
“Where is she?”
Bellini looked at Adrien.
Then at Emma.
“She’s coming here.”
A sudden sound interrupted them.
A car approaching the gates.
Everyone turned.
The guards moved.
Adrien instinctively stepped in front of Emma.
But this time, she did not move behind him.
She stood beside him.
Together.
The gates opened slowly.
A black vehicle entered the property.
The headlights disappeared.
The engine stopped.
The driver’s door opened.
And a woman stepped out.
Older.
Changed.
But unmistakable.
Emma stopped breathing.
Because even after all these years…
she knew that face.
She knew those eyes.
She knew that voice.
“Emma.”
The world became silent.
Her mother looked at her with tears in her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
Emma could not move.
Could not speak.
Could only stare at the woman she had spent years trying to forget.
And beside her, Adrien Moretti lowered his eyes.
Because he knew something Emma did not.
May you like
Her mother had not returned because the danger was over.
She had returned because the war had only just begun.
