Chapter 4 - The Secret Hidden Inside The Recording

Emma Bennett did not sleep.
She tried.
She sat on the edge of the guest room bed for almost an hour, staring at the unfamiliar walls, listening to the quiet sounds of a house that did not belong to her.
The room was beautiful.
Too beautiful.
A large bed.
A private bathroom.
Fresh clothes placed neatly on a chair.
A view of the city lights through enormous windows.
Everything was designed for comfort.
Yet Emma felt like she was inside a cage made of gold.
Because no matter how soft the bed was, no matter how warm the room was, one thought kept returning.
Someone had followed her.
Someone had watched her.
Someone had decided that she was important enough to threaten.
And she still did not understand why.
She looked at her phone.
Three missed calls from work.
Two messages from her manager asking if she was okay.
Nothing from anyone else.
No messages from the people who had tried to trap her.
No threats.
No warnings.
That somehow scared her more.
Silence was often worse than anger.
Emma stood and walked toward the window.
Below, she could see the security lights around Adrien Moretti’s property.
Men moving quietly.
Checking gates.
Watching cameras.
A private army.
That was what it looked like.
She hated admitting it, but Adrien was right about one thing.
Her normal life was gone.
At least for now.
A soft knock came at the door.
Emma turned quickly.
“Come in.”
The door opened.
Adrien stood there.
Not wearing the expensive suit from earlier.
Not the intimidating version of himself from the garage.
He wore a simple black shirt with the sleeves rolled up.
For a moment, he looked less like a powerful man and more like someone who had not slept either.
“Lucas is asleep,” he said.
Emma nodded.
“Thank you.”
The words felt strange.
Because she meant them.
And she hated that.
Adrien noticed.
“You don’t like needing help.”
Emma looked away.
“I don’t like owing people.”
“You don’t owe me anything.”
She almost smiled.
“That’s hard to believe.”
“Why?”
“Because people like you don’t do things without expecting something.”
Adrien remained quiet.
Then he walked into the room but kept his distance.
“You’re right.”
Emma looked at him.
Again.
That honesty.
It kept throwing her off.
“You admit that?”
“Yes.”
“Then what do you expect?”
Adrien looked toward the window.
“The truth.”
Emma frowned.
“I told you. I don’t know anything.”
“I believe you.”
“Then what truth?”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black device.
A digital recorder.
Emma recognized it immediately.
Her heart dropped.
“What is that?”
“The reason they came after you.”
She stared.
“I don’t understand.”
Adrien placed it on the table between them.
“Thirty-six hours ago, when you overheard that conversation at Bellini’s, you weren’t the only person who heard something.”
Emma looked at the recorder.
“Who else?”
“Someone working for me.”
The answer made her uneasy.
“So this was recorded?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I needed to confirm something first.”
Emma stepped closer.
“And what did you confirm?”
Adrien pressed a button.
A voice filled the room.
A man speaking.
Angry.
Cold.
Emma immediately recognized it.
The same voice from the restaurant.
“Once Moretti loses control of his territory, the girl becomes useful.”
Emma froze.
The recording continued.
“She doesn’t know what she heard yet. But she knows enough. Find out who she talked to.”
Another voice responded.
“And if she refuses?”
A pause.
Then:
“You know what happens.”
Emma felt a chill.
She turned away.
The sound was different when you heard it without doubt.
When you knew it was real.
Adrien stopped the recording.
“She was never the target.”
Emma looked at him.
“What?”
“Not originally.”
“Then who was?”
“Me.”
The room became silent.
Emma stared.
“You’re saying they used me to get to you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Adrien’s expression hardened.
“Because Marco Duca knows the one thing I protect.”
Emma waited.
“What?”
He looked at her.
“People who cannot protect themselves.”
The answer was unexpected.
For a moment, Emma forgot to be angry.
Because it did not sound like something a criminal would say.
It sounded like something someone said after losing something.
“You really expect me to believe that?”
“No.”
The answer surprised her.
“I expect you to question everything.”
Adrien walked toward the door.
“That is how you survive.”
Emma watched him.
“Why do you care?”
He stopped.
She had asked before.
But this time, something about the question felt different.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just honest.
Adrien remained facing away from her.
“Because I know what happens when nobody comes.”
Emma’s expression softened slightly.
There was pain hidden in that sentence.
Old pain.
The kind people carried for years.
“What happened to you?”
Adrien did not answer.
Instead, he said:
“Get some sleep.”
Then he left.
Emma stood there, staring at the closed door.
She wanted to be angry.
She wanted to remind herself that he was dangerous.
That powerful men always had reasons.
That she should not trust him.
But she could not stop thinking about the way he had answered.
Not with arrogance.
Not with pride.
With regret.
The next morning, Emma woke up to shouting.
She immediately sat up.
Her first thought was Lucas.
She ran into the hallway.
Two men in dark suits were standing near the staircase.
Adrien was downstairs.
His voice was controlled.
But she could hear the anger beneath it.
“What happened?”
One of the men looked up.
“Someone accessed the old restaurant records.”
Emma stopped.
“Bellini’s?”
Everyone looked at her.
Adrien’s expression changed.
“You heard something.”
Emma slowly walked downstairs.
“Yes.”
The man continued.
“Someone deleted security footage from the night she heard the conversation.”
Adrien looked at Emma.
“How much do you remember?”
She tried.
The restaurant.
The private room.
The voices.
The words.
Then something clicked.
“One thing.”
Everyone became silent.
Emma swallowed.
“The person they were talking about.”
Adrien stepped closer.
“Who?”
She looked at him.
“They mentioned a shipment.”
His face changed.
“What shipment?”
“I don’t know.”
She closed her eyes, trying to remember.
“But they said someone inside your organization was helping Duca.”
The room became completely silent.
Adrien’s men exchanged looks.
Emma noticed.
This was bigger than she thought.
Much bigger.
“Who?” Adrien asked.
Emma shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Then she remembered something else.
A small detail.
A name.
A name spoken quietly.
Almost hidden.
“But…”
Adrien waited.
“They said…”
Her voice lowered.
“They said the person closest to you was the one who betrayed you.”
Nobody moved.
The words landed like a weapon.
Adrien’s expression became unreadable.
Because in his world, betrayal was more dangerous than enemies.
Enemies announced themselves.
Betrayers smiled while standing beside you.
He turned away slowly.
And for the first time since Emma met him…
She saw something she had not seen before.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For someone else.
“Find out who leaked the information.”
His voice was quiet.
The men immediately moved.
Emma watched them leave.
Then she looked at Adrien.
“Who is the person closest to you?”
He did not answer.
And that scared her more than anything.
Because Adrien Moretti was a man who always had answers.
But now...
May you like
He had a secret.
And someone inside his own world was preparing to destroy him.
