Chapter 3 - The House Behind The Iron Gates

Emma Bennett had always believed that the most dangerous moments in life announced themselves.
A car accident.
A phone call at midnight.
A stranger standing too close.
A doctor walking into a room with a serious expression.
She believed danger had a sound.
A warning.
A signal that told you to prepare.
But she was learning something different.
Sometimes danger arrived quietly.
Sometimes it opened a car door for you.
Sometimes it offered protection.
And sometimes the person saving you was the same person who made you wonder if you had just stepped into something even worse.
The black sedan moved through the city streets while rain covered the windows like a curtain.
Emma sat in the back seat, staring outside.
Chicago passed by in blurred lights.
Restaurants closing for the night.
People rushing beneath umbrellas.
Couples laughing outside bars.
Normal life.
A world that continued as if nothing had changed.
But Emma knew something had.
Forty minutes ago, she had been a waitress worrying about rent, groceries, and whether Lucas needed new shoes before winter.
Now she was sitting inside a luxury car belonging to Adrien Moretti, a man whose name seemed to carry power everywhere it went.
She hated that she felt safer.
That was the part that bothered her most.
Fear made sense.
Fear was easy.
Trust was complicated.
Adrien sat in the front passenger seat, speaking quietly into his phone.
“No.”
A pause.
“Move everyone away from her apartment.”
Emma looked up.
Her apartment.
Her home.
The place where Lucas slept.
Her fingers tightened around her coat.
Adrien noticed through the rearview mirror.
“You’re worried.”
It was not a question.
Emma looked away.
“Of course I’m worried.”
“You think I’m making the situation worse.”
She almost answered yes.
Instead, she said:
“I think every person who gets close to you ends up in danger.”
The driver remained silent.
Adrien did too.
For several seconds, the only sound was rain against glass.
Then he spoke.
“That is possible.”
Emma turned toward him.
She had expected denial.
A defense.
Something like, You don’t understand.
But he did not.
He simply accepted it.
“You admit it?”
“I admit that my world is dangerous.”
His voice remained calm.
“But I did not choose for that world to find you.”
Emma watched him carefully.
“You say that like you’re different from them.”
“I am.”
“How?”
Adrien looked out the window.
“Because they believe power means taking whatever they want.”
A pause.
“I believe power means deciding what you refuse to let happen.”
Emma did not respond.
The answer sounded like something from a movie.
Except nothing about tonight felt fictional.
The car turned away from downtown and entered a quieter area of the city.
The buildings became larger.
The streets became emptier.
Eventually, they reached a private road surrounded by tall iron gates.
Emma stared.
The gates opened before the car reached them.
She felt another wave of discomfort.
Of course they did.
People like Adrien Moretti did not wait outside doors.
Doors opened for them.
The car continued toward a massive estate hidden behind rows of trees.
The house was beautiful.
And intimidating.
Stone walls.
Large windows.
Warm lights glowing from inside.
It looked less like a home and more like a place built to survive a war.
When the car stopped, Adrien stepped out first.
He walked around and opened Emma’s door.
She hesitated before getting out.
“I need to see Lucas.”
“You will.”
“Now.”
Adrien studied her expression.
Then nodded.
“Of course.”
Inside, the house was even larger.
Emma immediately noticed the details.
Everything was expensive.
But nothing felt comfortable.
No family photographs on the walls.
No random decorations.
No signs of ordinary life.
It looked like a place where someone lived while waiting for something terrible to happen.
A woman in her fifties approached them.
Her expression softened when she saw Emma.
“Mr. Moretti.”
Adrien nodded.
“This is Emma Bennett.”
The woman looked at Emma kindly.
“Lucas is upstairs.”
Emma stopped.
“He’s here?”
“Yes.”
She immediately started walking.
Then she paused.
“Wait.”
Adrien looked at her.
“How?”
“I had someone bring him here before you left the garage.”
Emma’s eyes narrowed.
“You took my brother without asking me?”
The room became silent.
The woman stepped back slightly.
Adrien did not.
“I moved him because your apartment was compromised.”
“He is my brother.”
“I know.”
“No. You know information about him.”
Her voice rose.
“You don’t know him.”
For the first time, Adrien looked affected.
Only slightly.
But she saw it.
“You’re right.”
The honesty surprised her again.
“I don’t know him.”
He looked toward the staircase.
“But I know what happens when innocent people become targets.”
Emma wanted to stay angry.
She tried.
But then she heard footsteps.
Small footsteps.
“Emma?”
Everything changed.
She turned.
Lucas stood at the top of the stairs wearing his pajamas, his hair messy, his eyes tired.
The second he saw her, he ran.
Emma dropped down and hugged him tightly.
“Oh my God.”
She held him like she needed proof he was real.
Lucas buried his face against her shoulder.
“I thought something happened.”
Emma closed her eyes.
“I’m okay.”
“You promised you’d be home.”
“I know.”
“You were late.”
“I know.”
His small voice broke her heart.
She hugged him tighter.
“I’m sorry.”
Adrien watched from a distance.
And Emma noticed something strange.
For the first time since meeting him...
He looked human.
Not powerful.
Not dangerous.
Just a man watching someone he had protected finally breathe again.
Lucas pulled away slightly.
“Who is he?”
Emma looked at Adrien.
The question was harder than she expected.
“A friend.”
Adrien looked at her.
A very small expression appeared on his face.
Almost a smile.
Almost.
But Emma corrected herself.
“Someone helping us.”
Lucas studied Adrien with the seriousness only children could have.
“Are you a police officer?”
“No.”
“A superhero?”
Emma almost smiled despite herself.
Adrien looked down at the boy.
“No.”
“Then what are you?”
The room became quiet.
Adrien considered the question.
Finally, he answered:
“Someone trying to fix a mistake.”
Lucas seemed satisfied with that.
Children accepted things adults complicated.
The woman guided Lucas back upstairs to sleep.
Emma watched until he disappeared.
Then she turned toward Adrien.
“You brought him here because you thought my apartment wasn’t safe.”
“Yes.”
“Is it safe now?”
Adrien did not answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
Emma’s stomach tightened.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
Adrien walked toward the large windows overlooking the dark property.
“There are things happening between my organization and Duca’s.”
“There it is.”
Emma crossed her arms.
“Your organization.”
Adrien remained silent.
“I knew it.”
“You knew what?”
“That you’re not just some businessman.”
He looked back at her.
“I never said I was.”
“No. You just let me figure it out while your enemies chased me.”
A shadow crossed his face.
“I was trying to keep you away from it.”
“You failed.”
“Yes.”
The simple admission made her angry.
But also strangely disarmed.
Emma walked closer.
“Tell me the truth.”
Adrien looked at her.
“The truth is that Marco Duca believes you have information that can hurt him.”
“I don’t.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
“Because he believes you do.”
The answer was terrifying.
Emma looked down.
“So what happens now?”
Adrien’s voice became quieter.
“Now, we find out why.”
“And if we don’t?”
A long silence.
Then:
“Then I make sure he never gets close to you again.”
Emma looked at him.
She should have been comforted.
Instead, she felt the weight of his words.
Because Adrien Moretti did not sound like someone making a promise.
He sounded like someone making a decision.
Outside, thunder rolled across the city.
And somewhere in the darkness beyond the gates, someone was already watching the house.
Someone who knew Emma Bennett was no longer alone.
May you like
Someone who knew Adrien Moretti had chosen a side.
And someone who was preparing to make him regret it.
