Chapter 9 - The Man Who Learned to Be Protected

For the first time in years, Giovanni Moretti had no answer.
Because nobody had ever asked.
But Lily had.
And maybe that was the greatest danger of all.
Not because she could hurt him.
Because she could save him.
The thought stayed with Giovanni long after Lily walked back into the apartment building.
He remained standing outside.
Watching the lights inside the windows.
Making sure she was safe.
Making sure nothing moved in the shadows.
That was what he did.
That was who he had always been.
The protector.
The man who stood between danger and everyone else.
But Lily’s question had found the one place in him that even he refused to look at.
Who protects you?
For years, Giovanni believed the answer was simple.
Nobody.
And he had accepted that.
He had built his life around it.
But now he was beginning to wonder if accepting loneliness was the same as choosing it.
The next morning, Giovanni woke before sunrise.
He had barely slept.
Not because of the threat.
Not because of Victor.
Those things were familiar.
What kept him awake was a sentence from Lily.
“You always protect everyone else.”
He stood in front of the mirror, adjusting his shirt.
For most of his life, he had seen his reflection as a weapon.
A reminder of the man he had become.
The sharp suit.
The controlled expression.
The eyes that showed nothing.
But this morning, he saw something else.
A tired man.
A man who had spent decades convincing himself that needing someone was a weakness.
And for the first time, he wondered if he had been wrong.
When Giovanni arrived at his office, Adrian was already waiting.
The security chief placed several documents on the desk.
“Victor made another move.”
Giovanni looked at the papers.
“What happened?”
“He contacted two of our former partners.”
“About what?”
Adrian hesitated.
“About you.”
Giovanni’s expression remained calm.
But Adrian knew him well enough to notice the change.
“What did he say?”
“That you have become distracted.”
A pause.
“That you have a weakness.”
Giovanni looked down.
Lily.
Of course.
Victor knew exactly what he was doing.
“He thinks she is my weakness.”
Adrian said nothing.
Because he understood something Giovanni did not want to admit.
Maybe Victor was wrong.
Maybe Lily was not his weakness.
Maybe she was the reason he was stronger.
That evening, Lily returned to work.
She expected things to feel different.
And they did.
Not because of Giovanni.
Because of herself.
Before, she had walked through the restaurant believing she was invisible.
Just another employee.
Just another person trying to survive.
Now she knew someone was watching.
Someone dangerous.
And strangely, that did not make her feel smaller.
It made her more aware.
More determined.
She had spent years fighting battles nobody saw.
This was simply another one.
When she entered the VIP section, Giovanni was already there.
But something about him seemed different.
Less distant.
More human.
“You’re late,” he said.
Lily looked at the clock.
“I’m two minutes early.”
A small smile appeared.
“I know.”
She placed his coffee on the table.
“You were trying to make me nervous.”
“Yes.”
“Did it work?”
“No.”
The answer came so quickly that Lily laughed.
And Giovanni found himself watching that reaction longer than he should have.
Her laugh.
It was a simple thing.
But it changed the entire room.
“You should do that more often,” he said.
She looked confused.
“Do what?”
“Laugh.”
For a moment, Lily became quiet.
Then she smiled softly.
“You should too.”
Giovanni looked away.
“I’m not very good at it.”
“Maybe you just forgot how.”
The sentence stayed with him.
Because maybe she was right.
Later that night, Giovanni finally told Lily the truth about what happened after the break-in.
Not everything.
Not the dangerous details.
But enough.
“Victor is trying to get to me through you.”
Lily listened carefully.
“Why?”
“Because he believes everyone has something they cannot lose.”
“And you?”
Giovanni looked at her.
“Yes.”
The honesty surprised her.
“What is it?”
He answered without hesitation.
“You.”
The room became silent.
Lily looked down.
Not because she was uncomfortable.
Because she understood the weight of that confession.
Giovanni Moretti did not say things like that.
Not casually.
Not without meaning.
“Giovanni…”
“I know what you’re thinking.”
“What?”
“That this is dangerous.”
She nodded.
“It is.”
“Yes.”
He accepted it.
“But I don’t regret meeting you.”
Those words meant more than any promise.
Because Giovanni had spent his life regretting choices.
Regretting trusting people.
Regretting showing emotion.
But not this.
Not her.
The following day, Lily visited her mother at the hospital.
The improvement was obvious.
Her mother looked healthier.
More hopeful.
And Lily felt something she had not allowed herself to feel in a long time.
Relief.
“You look different,” Evelyn said.
Lily smiled.
“Different?”
“Yes.”
Her mother studied her face.
“You look like someone who finally stopped carrying everything alone.”
Lily looked away.
Because mothers always noticed things.
Even things she tried to hide.
“There’s someone who helped me.”
Evelyn smiled.
“Someone special?”
Lily immediately shook her head.
“I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t have to.”
Lily laughed quietly.
Then became serious.
“He’s complicated.”
Her mother reached for her hand.
“Everyone worth knowing is.”
But while Lily was finding hope, Victor was preparing his final move.
He sat inside a private office across the city.
The same calm expression.
The same confidence.
His men stood nearby.
“She trusts him now,” one of them said.
Victor nodded.
“That was always the goal.”
The man looked confused.
“The goal?”
Victor smiled.
“Giovanni Moretti has spent his entire life believing he cannot be hurt.”
He looked out the window.
“But everyone breaks when they finally have something to lose.”
The man remained silent.
“What happens next?”
Victor placed a file on the table.
Inside was everything.
Giovanni’s businesses.
His allies.
His history.
And Lily.
“Now we show Giovanni that love does not make him stronger.”
A pause.
“It makes him vulnerable.”
That night, Giovanni received the call.
The one he had been expecting.
But not the one he wanted.
Adrian’s voice was serious.
“Sir.”
Giovanni immediately knew.
“What happened?”
“We found Victor.”
A pause.
“He wants to meet.”
Giovanni looked toward Lily, who was sitting across the restaurant reading a book during her break.
For years, he would have walked into that meeting alone.
He would have handled it himself.
He would have carried the burden.
But then he remembered Lily’s question.
Who protects you?
And he realized something.
Maybe letting someone stand beside him was not weakness.
Maybe it was trust.
“I’ll go.”
Adrian hesitated.
“Alone?”
Giovanni looked at Lily.
“No.”
The answer surprised even himself.
“I’m done fighting everything alone.”
When Lily noticed him preparing to leave, she immediately knew something was wrong.
“You’re going somewhere.”
Giovanni nodded.
“Yes.”
“Dangerous?”
“Yes.”
She stood.
“Then I’m coming.”
“No.”
The answer was immediate.
But this time, Lily did not back down.
“Giovanni.”
He stopped.
“I’m not asking because I think I can fight your battles.”
She stepped closer.
“I’m asking because you spent your whole life protecting people who walked away.”
Her eyes met his.
“I’m staying because I choose to.”
For several seconds, Giovanni said nothing.
Then he understood.
This was what he had never allowed himself to have.
Not someone to save.
Someone who chose him.
He nodded slowly.
“Okay.”
One word.
But it changed everything.
Because Giovanni Moretti, the man who had spent his entire life standing alone, finally allowed someone to stand beside him.
And somewhere in the shadows, Victor Bellini was about to discover something he had never considered.
A man with nothing to lose was dangerous.
May you like
But a man with something worth protecting...
Was unstoppable.
