Chapter 3 - The Secret Behind His Silence

Lily told herself she would forget about him.

That was the sensible thing to do.

People like Giovanni Moretti existed in a world completely separate from hers. A world of private rooms, expensive suits, and silent men standing near doors watching everyone who entered.

People like Lily existed in a world of late shifts, overdue notices, and checking her bank account before buying a cup of coffee.

Two different worlds.

Two different lives.

There was no reason for them to cross paths again.

At least, that was what she told herself.

But for the next three days, Lily found herself thinking about table twelve more often than she wanted to admit.

Not about his money.

Not about his power.

Not even about the fact that everyone at Giovanni’s whispered his name when they thought nobody was listening.

She thought about something much more confusing.

His eyes.

Because beneath all the coldness, beneath the reputation everyone feared, there had been something she recognized.

Loneliness.

And Lily understood loneliness.

Maybe too well.

The morning after meeting him, Lily woke up before sunrise as usual.

Her apartment was small.

Too small.

The paint on the walls was beginning to peel near the windows, and the old heater made strange noises every night. The kitchen contained exactly what she needed and nothing more.

A small table.

Two chairs.

A refrigerator that was older than she was.

But there was one thing that made the apartment feel like home.

Her mother.

“Morning, sweetheart.”

Lily smiled as she walked into the kitchen.

Her mother, Evelyn, sat near the window wrapped in a soft blanket. The illness had taken away much of her strength, but not her kindness.

“You’re awake already?” Lily asked.

Her mother smiled.

“You came home at two in the morning. I wanted to make sure you slept.”

Lily looked away.

She hated that her mother worried about her.

She hated that she could not fix everything.

“I’m fine.”

Her mother gave her the same look Lily gave customers when they lied.

The look that said:

I know better.

“You always say that.”

Lily poured coffee into a chipped mug.

“Because it’s true.”

“No.”

Evelyn reached for her hand.

“You say it because you think you have to be strong.”

Lily looked down.

For a moment, she almost told her.

Almost admitted how tired she was.

How scared she was.

How every month felt like she was one emergency away from losing everything.

But then she saw the worry in her mother’s face.

And she smiled.

“I have work.”

Another lie.

Another day.

Another thing she carried alone.

That evening, Giovanni returned to table twelve.

But something was different.

The restaurant staff noticed immediately.

He was usually impossible to read.

Cold.

Focused.

Business first.

Always.

But tonight, he arrived earlier than expected and looked toward the entrance several times.

Waiting.

Marcus noticed.

So did the other servers.

Nobody said anything.

Nobody was brave enough.

Except Marco, the floor manager.

“Everything okay, Mr. Moretti?”

Giovanni looked at him.

The question disappeared from Marco’s face immediately.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Actually…”

Giovanni looked toward the dining area.

“Where is Lily?”

Marco blinked.

The fact that Giovanni knew her name surprised him.

“She starts in twenty minutes.”

Giovanni nodded once.

Then said nothing.

But Marco understood.

The most powerful man who entered Giovanni’s restaurant every month had just asked about a waitress.

And that was something nobody had ever seen before.

When Lily arrived, she was carrying a bag from the pharmacy.

She had spent her lunch break searching for a cheaper version of her mother’s medication.

The cheaper version was still expensive.

But she had no choice.

She entered the restaurant through the employee entrance, tied her hair back, and prepared herself for another night.

She almost made it to the dining room before someone stopped her.

“Lily.”

She turned.

Giovanni stood near the private section.

Alone.

No guards.

No intimidating group around him.

Just him.

For some reason, that made him seem even more powerful.

Because a man who needed three guards to feel safe was different from a man who did not.

“Mr. Moretti.”

“You’re limping more today.”

Lily immediately straightened.

“I’m not.”

He looked at her.

She sighed.

“You really do that a lot.”

“Do what?”

“Notice things.”

A small silence passed.

Then Giovanni said:

“Most people only notice things when they want something.”

The answer surprised her.

Because it sounded less like confidence.

More like disappointment.

Lily studied him.

“You don’t trust people.”

It was not a question.

Giovanni looked away.

“No.”

“Why?”

The restaurant was busy around them.

But somehow, the moment felt quiet.

Giovanni’s expression changed slightly.

A memory.

Something painful.

“Because trust is expensive.”

Lily waited.

“And I have paid too much for it.”

For the first time, she saw something behind the reputation.

A wound.

Not a physical one.

Something deeper.

Before she could ask more, one of his security men approached.

“Sir.”

Giovanni’s expression immediately changed.

The softness disappeared.

The businessman returned.

“What happened?”

The man leaned closer and whispered something.

Lily could not hear.

But she saw Giovanni’s jaw tighten.

A few seconds later, he looked back at her.

The coldness was gone again.

“Be careful when you leave tonight.”

She frowned.

“Why?”

“Just be careful.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“It’s a warning.”

Then he walked away.

Leaving Lily standing there with more questions than answers.

Later that night, Lily served table twelve again.

But this time, something was different.

The conversation was not about bills.

Not about problems.

Not about survival.

It was quieter.

Almost normal.

She brought Giovanni his drink.

He looked at the menu.

“You never order anything for yourself.”

She smiled slightly.

“Because I’m working.”

“You always say that.”

“And you always notice.”

A small smile appeared on his face.

The first real one she had seen.

“You’re stubborn.”

“So are you.”

The three guards at the table looked shocked.

Nobody spoke to Giovanni like that.

Nobody teased him.

Nobody challenged him.

But Lily did.

And somehow, Giovanni did not hate it.

A few minutes later, a customer from another table walked past.

He looked at Lily and snapped his fingers.

“Waitress.”

She turned.

The man was wealthy, drunk, and clearly used to being obeyed.

“Bring another bottle.”

“I’ll send someone right over.”

“No.”

He grabbed her wrist.

The movement was quick.

But Giovanni saw it.

Everything changed.

The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly.

The three security men stood.

Lily froze.

The customer laughed.

“What?”

He looked around.

Then saw Giovanni.

His smile disappeared.

Giovanni stood slowly.

He did not raise his voice.

He did not need to.

“Remove your hand.”

The man immediately let go.

“I didn’t mean anything.”

Giovanni walked closer.

His expression was calm.

Too calm.

“That was your mistake.”

The customer became pale.

Within seconds, restaurant security arrived and handled the situation.

Lily stood silently.

She had dealt with men like that before.

Men who thought money gave them permission.

But nobody had ever stepped between her and them.

Not like this.

Giovanni turned toward her.

“Are you hurt?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

His eyes narrowed slightly.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“Thank you.”

Giovanni looked at her.

And something in his expression softened.

“Someone should have done it sooner.”

Those words again.

The same feeling.

The same sadness.

Lily suddenly realized something.

The world saw Giovanni Moretti as a dangerous man.

A man without mercy.

A man made of stone.

But maybe the truth was different.

Maybe he had spent his entire life becoming feared because being feared was easier than being hurt.

And Giovanni realized something too.

The woman standing in front of him was not afraid of his reputation.

She was not impressed by his wealth.

She was not trying to gain anything.

She simply saw him.

And that was something he had not experienced in a very long time.

As Lily walked away to continue her shift, Giovanni watched her disappear into the crowd.
