Chapter 6 - The Enemy in the Shadows

Because Giovanni Moretti had spent his entire life protecting his empire.

But now, for the first time, he had something far more dangerous to protect.

Someone he cared about.

The realization should have frightened him.

And it did.

Not because he was afraid of losing power.

Not because he was afraid of his enemies.

Giovanni Moretti had faced threats that would have broken most men.

He had survived betrayals.

Violence.

Wars fought in silence between powerful families.

He had walked through situations where one wrong decision could have ended everything.

But Lily was different.

Lily was not a business deal.

She was not an ally.

She was not someone who needed his protection because of fear.

She was someone who had entered his life without wanting anything from him.

And that made protecting her feel more personal than anything he had ever done.

The information came back less than twenty-four hours later.

Giovanni sat inside his private office overlooking the city.

The room was exactly like him.

Elegant.

Expensive.

Controlled.

Dark wooden furniture.

Shelves filled with old books.

A large window showing the endless movement of the city below.

Everything had a place.

Everything had a purpose.

Except the photograph sitting on his desk.

It was not a photograph of money.

Not a photograph of family.

Not a photograph connected to business.

It was a picture taken by accident.

A security camera image from Giovanni’s restaurant.

Lily standing near table twelve.

Smiling slightly while carrying a tray.

It was not a perfect picture.

The lighting was poor.

The angle was ordinary.

But Giovanni had looked at it longer than he wanted to admit.

Because it captured something rare.

Happiness.

A moment where Lily was not exhausted.

Not worried.

Not carrying the weight of the world.

The office door opened.

His security chief, Adrian, entered.

“Sir.”

Giovanni looked up.

“What did you find?”

Adrian placed a folder on the desk.

“The man following her was not random.”

Giovanni’s expression changed.

“Who?”

“A private investigator.”

The room became colder.

“Working for who?”

Adrian hesitated.

That was enough for Giovanni to understand.

“Say it.”

“Victor Bellini.”

Silence.

Giovanni leaned back slowly.

Victor Bellini.

An old name.

A dangerous name.

A man who had once been considered family.

Years ago, Victor had worked beside Giovanni when they were both younger. They had built businesses together. They had survived difficult times together.

But somewhere along the way, loyalty became ambition.

And ambition became betrayal.

“Why would Victor watch Lily?”

Adrian looked at the folder.

“We don’t know yet.”

Giovanni’s eyes narrowed.

“But he knows about her.”

“Yes.”

That answer bothered him more than anything else.

Because Victor did not waste time.

If he was watching Lily, there was a reason.

A plan.

A purpose.

Giovanni closed the folder.

“Keep her safe.”

Adrian nodded.

“Without her knowing?”

Giovanni looked toward the window.

He thought about Lily’s reaction if she discovered guards following her.

She would be angry.

She would tell him she did not need protection.

She would say she was not helpless.

And she would be right.

“No.”

Adrian looked surprised.

“No?”

“Protect her.”

Giovanni paused.

“But do it quietly.”

Lily noticed something was different.

She always noticed things.

It was one of the reasons Giovanni found her fascinating.

She noticed small changes.

A customer who was unhappy before they spoke.

A coworker who needed help but refused to ask.

A person pretending to be fine.

That evening, she noticed Giovanni was quieter.

Not colder.

Just distracted.

She approached table twelve with his coffee.

“You’re thinking about something.”

Giovanni looked up.

“You say that like it is unusual.”

“For you?”

She placed the cup down.

“No.”

A small smile appeared.

“You’re always thinking.”

“That sounds like a criticism.”

“It isn’t.”

She looked at him carefully.

“It just means you carry too much.”

The words hit harder than she realized.

Because they were true.

Giovanni had spent years carrying responsibilities nobody else could see.

But hearing it from Lily felt different.

“Do you always analyze people?”

She shrugged.

“Only the ones who pretend they don’t need anyone.”

For a moment, Giovanni said nothing.

Then he asked:

“And what do you think about me?”

The question surprised her.

Because she knew the answer mattered.

She looked at him.

Really looked at him.

“I think you’re lonely.”

The restaurant noise seemed to disappear.

Giovanni’s expression did not change.

But something behind his eyes did.

Nobody said that to him.

Nobody dared.

“You think I’m lonely?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because people are around you all the time.”

She glanced at the guards.

“But nobody seems close to you.”

Giovanni looked down.

And Lily realized she had touched something painful.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

His voice was quiet.

“You’re probably right.”

That night, Giovanni made a decision.

A dangerous one.

He invited Lily into his world.

Not completely.

Not yet.

But enough.

He asked her to meet him outside the restaurant after her shift.

She looked suspicious.

“Why?”

“Dinner.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“You already bought me dinner once.”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

“Now I’m asking.”

That made her pause.

Because Giovanni had changed.

The man who once commanded rooms was now asking.

Not ordering.

Asking.

“Okay.”

The answer surprised both of them.

The restaurant Giovanni chose was not like Giovanni’s.

It was smaller.

Quieter.

A hidden place near the river where nobody recognized him.

Lily looked around.

“This is unexpected.”

“What did you expect?”

She smiled.

“Honestly?”

“Yes.”

“A private room with ten guards standing outside.”

For the first time that night, Giovanni laughed.

A real laugh.

Short.

Unexpected.

Lily stared.

“What?”

“I’ve never heard you laugh before.”

The smile faded slightly.

“I don’t do it often.”

“Why?”

Giovanni looked at the water outside.

“Because life gave me few reasons.”

Lily became quiet.

Then she said:

“Maybe you need new reasons.”

He looked at her.

And for a moment, Giovanni Moretti forgot about enemies.

Forgot about business.

Forgot about everything waiting outside.

He was simply a man having dinner with a woman who made him feel normal.

But while Giovanni was discovering something he thought he had lost forever, someone else was watching.

Across the street.

Inside a dark vehicle.

Victor Bellini looked through the window at the restaurant.

At Giovanni.

At Lily.

His expression remained calm.

Too calm.

“She really changed him,” the man beside him said.

Victor smiled slightly.

“That is the problem.”

“What do we do?”

Victor looked at the woman sitting across from Giovanni.

The woman who had no idea she had become the center of a war she never asked to join.

“We find out what she means to him.”

The man nodded.

“And if she means enough?”

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“Then Giovanni Moretti finally has something to lose.”

The next morning, Lily found something strange waiting outside her apartment.

A single white envelope.

No name.

No address.

Just her name written across the front.

Lily.

Her heart slowed.

Because she knew immediately.

Someone knew who she was.

Someone had been watching.

She opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was one sentence.

Stay away from Giovanni Moretti before you get hurt.

Lily stared at the words.

For the first time since meeting him, fear entered her mind.

Not fear of Giovanni.

Fear of the world surrounding him.

Because she finally understood something.

Giovanni had not been protecting her because he thought she was weak.

He had been protecting her because he knew something she did not.

When someone entered his world...

May you like

They became a target.

And now Lily Carter was no longer invisible.
