Chapter 7 - The Choice Between Fear and Trust

Lily Carter was no longer invisible.

The realization followed her everywhere.

It followed her on the train ride to work.

It followed her while she stood behind the counter preparing coffee before the restaurant opened.

It followed her when she looked over her shoulder walking home.

One sentence had changed everything.

Stay away from Giovanni Moretti before you get hurt.

She had read it dozens of times.

Not because she was afraid of the words.

Because she was trying to understand the person who wrote them.

Who knew where she lived?

Who had been watching her?

And why was Giovanni Moretti’s name enough to turn a normal warning into something terrifying?

Before meeting Giovanni, Lily’s biggest fears had been ordinary.

Hospital bills.

Losing her apartment.

Not having enough money for groceries.

Those fears were painful.

But they were familiar.

This was different.

This was a door opening into a world she had never seen.

A world where people watched from shadows.

Where powerful men had enemies.

Where kindness from someone like Giovanni came with consequences.

For the first time, Lily wondered if she had made a mistake.

When she arrived at Giovanni’s restaurant that evening, she almost turned around.

Almost.

She stood outside the entrance for several seconds, watching people walk inside.

Customers laughing.

Employees moving quickly.

Everything looked normal.

But Lily knew better now.

Things were not always what they appeared to be.

She touched the envelope inside her coat pocket.

Then she walked in.

Because running away had never solved anything.

Not when her father left.

Not when her mother became sick.

Not when life became harder than she thought she could handle.

Lily had survived by facing things.

Not avoiding them.

Giovanni knew something was wrong the moment he saw her.

She was still Lily.

Still the same woman who smiled at customers.

Still the same person who noticed everything around her.

But something had changed.

The confidence was there.

The kindness was there.

But behind her eyes was caution.

A distance.

He hated that.

Not because it affected him.

Because he knew why it was there.

Someone had reached her.

Someone had made her afraid.

Giovanni stood from his table.

“Lily.”

She stopped.

Usually, hearing her name from him made her feel strangely calm.

Tonight, it made her remember the warning.

She approached slowly.

“You knew this would happen.”

Giovanni’s expression changed immediately.

“What happened?”

She reached into her coat and placed the envelope on the table.

His eyes moved to it.

Then everything about him changed.

The relaxed expression disappeared.

The warmth disappeared.

The man everyone feared returned.

“Where did you get this?”

“Outside my apartment.”

His jaw tightened.

“When?”

“This morning.”

Giovanni picked up the envelope carefully.

Not like paper.

Like evidence.

Like something dangerous.

Lily watched him.

“You know who sent it.”

It was not a question.

Giovanni did not answer immediately.

And that silence told her enough.

“Giovanni.”

His eyes lifted.

“Victor Bellini.”

The name meant nothing to her.

But the way Giovanni said it did.

It carried history.

Pain.

Betrayal.

“Who is he?”

“A mistake I thought I buried.”

Lily folded her arms.

“And now that mistake knows my address?”

Giovanni looked away.

The answer was obvious.

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised her.

She expected excuses.

Denials.

Instead, he admitted it.

That somehow made her more upset.

“You knew this could happen.”

“Yes.”

“And you still let me get close to you?”

Silence.

Because that question was different.

Not an accusation.

A wound.

Giovanni looked at her.

“I tried not to.”

The words were quiet.

Lily froze.

“What?”

“I tried to keep distance.”

He looked at the envelope in his hand.

“I knew what my life could bring to someone else.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

The question stayed between them.

Giovanni had faced enemies without hesitation.

But answering Lily felt harder.

“Because you were the first person in years who looked at me and saw something other than what everyone else sees.”

Lily’s expression softened.

But only slightly.

“Giovanni…”

“I know.”

He interrupted gently.

“I know this is unfair.”

For the first time, she saw something she had never seen before.

Not power.

Not control.

Regret.

“I should have told you.”

“Yes.”

The answer came immediately.

Giovanni accepted it.

“I should have.”

Later that night, Giovanni canceled every meeting.

Every call.

Every obligation.

Because for once, there was something more important.

Lily sat across from him in the empty restaurant.

No customers.

No noise.

Just two people trying to understand something neither expected.

“I’m angry,” she admitted.

“I know.”

“I’m angry because you helped me.”

Giovanni looked confused.

“Why?”

“Because you made me feel safe.”

The words surprised him.

She continued.

“And now I realize maybe I wasn’t.”

Giovanni lowered his eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

It was a simple sentence.

But from Giovanni Moretti, it meant more.

Men like him did not apologize easily.

Especially not him.

Lily studied his face.

“You really are different from what people say.”

A faint smile appeared.

“People usually say worse things.”

“I believe that.”

A quiet moment passed.

Then Lily asked:

“Do you want me to leave?”

Giovanni looked at her.

The question clearly hurt.

But he did not hide it.

“If that is what keeps you safe.”

The answer surprised her.

Because she expected him to fight.

To convince her.

To use his power.

Instead, he was willing to let her go.

That told her more than anything else.

Giovanni Moretti was not trying to own her.

He was trying to protect her.

Even from himself.

That night, Giovanni made a decision.

He called Adrian.

“Find everything about Victor Bellini.”

Adrian answered immediately.

“We already started.”

“I want everything.”

A pause.

“Sir?”

Giovanni looked through the restaurant window.

He saw Lily standing near the entrance, preparing to leave.

The woman who had entered his life without fear.

The woman who had reminded him he was still human.

“He threatened her.”

Adrian understood immediately.

“I’ll handle it.”

Giovanni’s voice became colder.

“No.”

A pause.

“This time, I handle it.”

The next morning, Lily received another surprise.

Not a threat.

A message.

From Giovanni.

I need to show you something.

She stared at the screen.

Part of her wanted to ignore it.

Part of her wanted to protect herself.

But another part remembered something.

The man who had helped her mother.

The man who had sat with her after closing.

The man who admitted his mistakes instead of hiding them.

She replied:

Where?

The answer came quickly.

Somewhere you can see the truth.

An hour later, Giovanni brought her to a place she never expected.

Not a mansion.

Not an office.

Not somewhere connected to power.

An old building near the edge of the city.

Lily looked around.

“What is this?”

“My past.”

They walked inside.

The building was empty.

Dust covered the floors.

Old photographs lined the walls.

Giovanni stopped in front of one.

A younger version of himself stood beside several men.

Including Victor.

Lily looked at him.

“You trusted him.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Giovanni was silent for a long time.

Then he answered.

“He betrayed everyone who believed in him.”

“And you?”

His eyes stayed on the photograph.

“I survived.”

Lily realized something.

The warning was not only about danger.

It was about history.

Giovanni had been hurt before.

Deeply.

And despite everything, he had still chosen to care about someone again.

That was not weakness.

That was courage.

She looked at him.

“Giovanni.”

He turned.

“I’m still angry.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“But I don’t want fear to decide for me.”

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then Lily stepped closer.

“I want to know the truth.”

Giovanni looked at her.

Not as a waitress.

Not as someone he needed to protect.

As an equal.

And for the first time in years, Giovanni Moretti allowed himself to believe something dangerous.

Maybe trust was not always a weakness.

May you like

Maybe, with the right person...

It was the only thing worth fighting for.
