Chapter 8 - The Truth Hidden in the Past

Maybe, with the right person...
It was the only thing worth fighting for.
Giovanni Moretti had spent most of his life believing the opposite.
Trust was a weakness.
Love was a vulnerability.
Caring about someone gave the world a weapon it could use against you.
Those beliefs had protected him for years.
They had helped him survive.
But standing in that abandoned building with Lily beside him, Giovanni realized something he had avoided for too long.
Survival was not the same as living.
He had built an empire.
He had earned respect.
He had made sure nobody could destroy him.
But somewhere along the way, he had created a life where nobody could reach him either.
Until Lily.
The old building was silent.
Dust covered the wooden floors.
The walls carried memories Giovanni had spent years trying to forget.
Lily walked slowly through the room, looking at old photographs and documents.
She did not rush him.
That was one of the things Giovanni appreciated most about her.
She never forced people to reveal things before they were ready.
She simply waited.
And somehow, that made him want to speak.
“There was a time when I trusted everyone around me.”
Lily turned toward him.
Giovanni stood near an old photograph.
A younger version of himself stared back from the frame.
He looked different.
Not because of his appearance.
Because there was something missing.
The weight.
The exhaustion.
The years of carrying responsibility.
“I was younger,” he continued.
“I believed loyalty was something people valued.”
Lily listened quietly.
“Victor was my closest friend.”
The name carried bitterness.
“We built everything together.”
Giovanni touched the edge of the photograph.
“He knew my plans. My weaknesses. My family.”
“What happened?”
Giovanni was silent.
Then he answered.
“He decided he deserved more.”
Lily frowned.
“More than friendship?”
“More than partnership.”
His eyes darkened.
“Power.”
The word hung in the air.
“Victor believed he should be the one everyone feared.”
Lily looked at him.
“And you?”
“I never wanted fear.”
That surprised her.
Because everyone described Giovanni as someone who controlled through fear.
But he shook his head.
“I wanted stability.”
He looked around the old building.
“I wanted to create something where the people who worked with me could survive.”
A small, sad smile appeared.
“But somewhere along the way, I became the thing I was trying to prevent.”
Lily felt something tighten in her chest.
Because for the first time, she understood.
Giovanni was not proud of his reputation.
He was trapped by it.
“You never told me why you helped my mother.”
Giovanni looked at her.
The question changed the atmosphere.
Because it was not about enemies.
Not about Victor.
It was about them.
“I told you.”
“No.”
Lily shook her head.
“You told me you recognized my struggle.”
She stepped closer.
“But why did it matter to you?”
Giovanni looked away.
The answer was difficult.
Because the truth was something he had never admitted.
“Years ago, my mother was sick.”
Lily became still.
“I was young.”
His voice lowered.
“I had money. Power. Connections.”
A pause.
“But none of it could change the fact that I was losing her.”
Lily listened.
“I remember sitting in a hospital hallway.”
His eyes moved toward the window.
“People came to talk about business. About problems. About money.”
He swallowed slightly.
“But nobody asked if I was okay.”
The silence after that sentence was heavy.
“And then I saw you.”
Lily looked at him.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
Giovanni nodded.
“You were exhausted. You were scared. But you still smiled at everyone.”
A faint smile crossed his face.
“You reminded me of someone.”
“Your mother?”
“Yes.”
For the first time, Lily saw the sadness behind his eyes.
Not the sadness of a powerful man.
The sadness of a son who had lost someone important.
That evening, Giovanni brought Lily back to the restaurant.
But something had changed.
Not between them.
Around them.
The danger was still there.
The enemies were still there.
But Lily no longer saw Giovanni as someone hiding behind walls.
She saw the reason those walls existed.
And Giovanni saw something too.
Lily was not fragile.
She was not someone he needed to save.
She was someone who chose to stand beside him.
That difference mattered.
The next few days were calm.
Too calm.
Giovanni knew better than to trust silence.
Silence usually came before something happened.
And he was right.
The information about Victor finally arrived.
Adrian placed a file on Giovanni’s desk.
“This is everything.”
Giovanni opened it.
The details were worse than expected.
Victor had been meeting with people connected to rival organizations.
He had been spreading rumors.
Creating distrust.
Preparing something bigger.
“He wants control,” Adrian said.
Giovanni closed the file.
“No.”
Adrian looked confused.
“No?”
“He wants revenge.”
Because Giovanni knew Victor.
Money was never enough for men like him.
They did not want success.
They wanted someone else to lose.
That night, Lily noticed Giovanni was different again.
He was distant.
Not emotionally.
Strategically.
His mind was somewhere else.
“You’re planning something.”
Giovanni looked at her.
“I’m handling a problem.”
“That’s not what I said.”
A small smile appeared.
“You really do notice everything.”
“Yes.”
She looked serious.
“And I know when someone is trying to carry everything alone.”
Giovanni became quiet.
Because that was exactly what he was doing.
“I don’t want you involved.”
Lily expected that answer.
But it still hurt.
“Why?”
“Because this world is dangerous.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
“Then understand.”
“No.”
Her answer surprised him.
Lily stepped closer.
“I understand that you’re scared.”
Giovanni looked at her.
Not angry.
Just surprised.
“Scared?”
“Yes.”
She held his gaze.
“Not for yourself.”
A pause.
“For me.”
Those words reached him.
Because they were true.
Giovanni Moretti was not afraid of losing power.
He was afraid of losing Lily.
Before he could answer, his phone rang.
One of his security men.
Giovanni answered.
His expression changed instantly.
“What happened?”
Silence.
Then:
“Where?”
Lily watched him.
She knew immediately.
Something was wrong.
Giovanni ended the call.
“Your apartment.”
Her heart stopped.
“What?”
“There was an attempted break-in.”
Fear crossed her face.
“Is my mother okay?”
“Yes.”
He answered immediately.
“She is safe.”
Relief came first.
Then anger.
Someone had crossed a line.
Giovanni saw it.
The fear in her eyes.
The realization that this was real.
Not a warning.
Not a message.
A threat.
“I’m sorry.”
Lily looked at him.
“For what?”
“For bringing this into your life.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Giovanni looked surprised.
“No?”
“You didn’t bring this into my life.”
She stepped closer.
“Your enemies did.”
A pause.
“And I need you to stop blaming yourself.”
Giovanni stared at her.
Because nobody spoke to him like that.
Nobody told him he was allowed to forgive himself.
Later that night, Giovanni stood outside Lily’s apartment building.
Security surrounded the area.
But Lily refused to leave.
“I’m staying.”
Giovanni looked at her.
“Lily.”
“No.”
Her voice was calm.
“I spent my whole life running from things I couldn’t control.”
She looked at him.
“I’m not doing that anymore.”
For a moment, Giovanni saw the same woman from the first night.
The waitress who sat at table twelve.
The woman who was exhausted but refused to break.
Only now she was different.
Stronger.
Because she had chosen.
Not because she was fearless.
Because she trusted him.
Giovanni slowly nodded.
“Then I promise you something.”
“What?”
His voice became steady.
“No one will hurt you.”
Lily looked at him.
“And what about you?”
The question surprised him.
“What about me?”
“You always protect everyone else.”
She paused.
“Who protects you?”
For the first time in years, Giovanni Moretti had no answer.
Because nobody had ever asked.
But Lily had.
And maybe that was the greatest danger of all.
May you like
Not because she could hurt him.
Because she could save him.
