Chapter 7 - The Night He Finally Chose Her

The message was still on my phone.
The man standing beside Clara is not the man who saved her.
I stared at those words.
Over and over.
Because I knew exactly what they meant.
They were talking about Jonah.
The man who had stood beside me.
The man who had protected me.
The man I had spent three years believing was the only person in the world who never needed anyone.
Now someone was telling me he wasn't who I thought he was.
And the worst part?
A small part of me was afraid that it might be true.
The room was completely dark.
Security moved through the penthouse.
People whispered.
Phones lit up faces.
But Jonah didn't move.
He stood in front of me.
Like he was trying to block me from something he couldn't see.
"Stay behind me."
His voice was low.
Controlled.
The same voice he used when danger appeared.
But this time, I heard something different.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For me.
I looked at him.
"Is it true?"
His eyes met mine.
"What?"
"The message."
Silence.
The longest silence I had ever shared with him.
Then Jonah answered.
"No."
The answer came quickly.
Almost too quickly.
I studied his face.
"You didn't even ask what I meant."
Because he already knew.
Jonah looked away.
And that was enough.
"You know something."
He didn't deny it.
"Clara—"
"No."
I stepped back.
"I am tired of hearing my name right before someone hides something from me."
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
Good.
Maybe he needed to understand.
Maybe everyone needed to understand.
I wasn't the secretary who quietly fixed problems anymore.
I wasn't the woman who stood behind him and accepted whatever he decided.
I was the person whose entire life had been turned upside down.
Jonah lowered his voice.
"I never wanted to hurt you."
"But you did."
The honesty between us was painful.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then my mother stepped forward.
"Clara, listen to me."
I looked at her.
"Did you know?"
Her face changed.
That was my answer.
"You knew."
"I knew Jonah was trying to protect you."
I laughed quietly.
"Everyone keeps using that word."
Protect.
Protect.
Protect.
"But nobody asks if I wanted to be protected."
My mother looked heartbroken.
Because she knew I was right.
Jonah looked at me.
"I made mistakes."
That sentence surprised me.
Because Jonah Navarro didn't admit mistakes.
Not publicly.
Not privately.
Not ever.
"I thought if I kept you away from the truth, you would be safe."
I looked at him.
"And now?"
His expression hardened.
"Now I know keeping you away was the most dangerous thing I could have done."
Before I could answer, a loud crash came from downstairs.
Everyone froze.
Marcus immediately touched his earpiece.
"Security?"
No response.
That was worse.
Jonah moved instantly.
"Lock every exit."
The guards moved.
My mother grabbed my hand.
"Clara, we need to leave."
But I didn't move.
Because something had changed.
For years, I had run from unanswered questions.
Tonight, I was done running.
"Who is after me?"
Nobody answered.
Jonah looked at Marcus.
Marcus hesitated.
Then:
"The Navarro family enemy."
I frowned.
"I don't understand."
Jonah looked at me.
"Your father was not just connected to my family."
I waited.
"He was investigating them."
My heart sank.
"My father was against your family?"
Jonah nodded.
"At first."
The way he said it bothered me.
"At first?"
Jonah looked toward the broken entrance.
"Then he discovered something."
"What?"
He didn't answer.
Because suddenly, the entire penthouse shook.
A window cracked.
People screamed.
Security rushed toward the sound.
Jonah grabbed my hand.
This time, I let him.
Not because I had forgiven him.
Because I trusted him enough to survive the next few minutes.
We moved through the hallway.
My mother stayed close.
Marcus followed behind us.
Then Jonah stopped.
There was something on the floor.
A small envelope.
My name was written on it.
Again.
My name.
Like someone wanted me to know this was meant for me.
Jonah reached for it.
But I stopped him.
"No."
He looked at me.
"Clara."
"If it's about me, I open it."
For a second, he looked surprised.
Then he nodded.
I picked up the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
My father.
Adrian Navarro.
Standing beside Jonah.
But that wasn't what shocked me.
It was the person standing behind them.
A person I recognized.
Someone who had been in my life for years.
Someone I trusted.
My hands started shaking.
Jonah saw the photo.
His face changed completely.
"Impossible."
I looked at him.
"Who is that?"
He didn't answer.
Because he was staring at the same person I was.
The person who had secretly been connected to everything.
The person who knew my mother was alive.
The person who knew who I was.
The person who had been watching me for years.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Nobody spoke at first.
Only breathing.
Then a familiar voice whispered:
"Clara, don't trust Jonah."
My blood froze.
Because I knew that voice.
It was the voice of the person standing right behind me.
May you like
I slowly turned around...
And saw the person from the photograph.
