Chapter 6 - The Truth About Jonah Navarro

My mother was standing in front of me.

Alive.

After all these years.

The woman I had cried for.

The woman I had buried in my heart.

The woman I thought I would never see again.

She was standing inside Jonah Navarro’s birthday party, looking at me like she had been waiting for this moment.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even Jonah.

Especially Jonah.

My mother looked older.

Of course she did.

Time had passed.

Pain had passed.

Secrets had passed.

But I still recognized her.

The way she looked at me.

The way her eyes softened.

The way she held herself like she was afraid that one wrong movement would make me disappear.

"Clara."

My name left her lips quietly.

And that was enough.

My eyes filled with tears before I could stop them.

I hated that.

I hated that after everything, after all the confusion and anger, one word from her could still break every wall I had built.

"Mom?"

My voice barely came out.

She took a step forward.

But I stepped back.

Not because I didn't want her near me.

Because I didn't know how to feel.

"You were alive."

She closed her eyes.

A painful expression crossed her face.

"Yes."

I laughed once.

But there was no happiness in it.

"Do you know how many nights I waited for you?"

Her eyes filled.

"Clara—"

"No."

I shook my head.

"I spent years thinking something happened to you."

"I know."

"You don't know."

The words came faster.

"You weren't there."

My mother looked down.

And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.

Shame.

"I wanted to be."

That answer hurt.

Because I believed her.

And somehow that made it worse.

Jonah stood between us, silent.

Watching.

Waiting.

Like he knew this wasn't his conversation to control.

That surprised me.

The old Jonah would have stepped in.

He would have taken over.

He would have decided what happened next.

But tonight was different.

Tonight, he let me choose.

"Why?" I asked my mother.

One word.

One question.

The question I had carried for years.

"Why did you leave me?"

She looked at Jonah.

That small movement didn't escape me.

My heart sank.

Because somehow, everything came back to him.

"Because of Jonah's father."

My expression changed.

"Again."

I looked at Jonah.

"Everything is because of your family."

Jonah didn't defend himself.

That bothered me.

Because I was used to him fighting.

"I need to explain."

My mother's voice was soft.

I looked at her.

"Then explain."

She took a deep breath.

"I worked for the Navarro family when I was younger."

I already knew that part.

But she continued.

"Your father was involved with them."

I froze.

"My father?"

I had spent my entire life believing my father left before I was old enough to remember.

My mother never talked about him.

Never.

"Your father wasn't a stranger, Clara."

My hands became cold.

"Who was he?"

She looked at Jonah.

And Jonah looked away.

That was when I understood.

There was a connection.

A connection nobody wanted to say out loud.

"Jonah."

My voice was quiet.

"Why are you looking away?"

He didn't answer.

My mother whispered:

"Because your father was Adrian Navarro."

The room disappeared.

I heard nothing.

Not the guests.

Not the music.

Not the city outside.

Nothing.

Adrian Navarro.

Jonah's father.

The same man whose name built an empire.

The same man people feared.

The same man who had shaped Jonah's entire life.

"No."

I shook my head.

"That's impossible."

My mother stepped closer.

"I wanted to tell you."

"Then why didn't you?"

"Because I was afraid."

"Of him?"

She looked at Jonah.

"No."

The answer surprised me.

"Of what his family would do if they knew you existed."

I looked at Jonah.

He looked devastated.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Devastated.

"You knew."

It wasn't a question.

Jonah swallowed.

"I suspected."

My anger returned instantly.

"You suspected?"

"Clara—"

"You suspected I was connected to your family and you said nothing?"

His eyes lowered.

"I didn't know if it was true."

"But you knew enough."

Silence.

Again.

That terrible silence.

I turned away.

Because I couldn't look at him.

The man I trusted.

The man I defended.

The man who was suddenly connected to every unanswered question in my life.

My mother touched my arm.

"I'm sorry."

I looked at her.

"I need the truth."

She nodded.

"You deserve it."

She reached into her coat and pulled out a small folder.

Old.

Worn.

Carefully protected.

"I kept this for you."

I didn't take it immediately.

"What is it?"

"Everything I couldn't tell you."

Slowly, I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Letters.

And one picture that made my breath stop.

A young woman.

My mother.

Standing beside a young man.

A man I had never seen.

But I knew exactly who he was.

Adrian Navarro.

Beside them was a baby.

Me.

My hands shook.

"My whole life was a lie."

"No."

My mother shook her head.

"Your life was protected."

"By hiding it from me?"

She looked down.

"Sometimes people make terrible choices because they believe they are saving someone."

I looked at Jonah.

The words felt like they belonged to him too.

Because maybe that was what he had been doing.

Maybe he had been protecting me.

But protection without trust still felt like a prison.

Suddenly, Marcus rushed into the room.

His expression was urgent.

"Jonah."

Everyone turned.

"What happened?"

Marcus looked at my mother.

Then at me.

"We have a problem."

Jonah immediately became alert.

"What kind?"

Marcus lowered his voice.

"Someone accessed the old Navarro family records."

Jonah's face changed.

"Impossible."

Marcus shook his head.

"They weren't looking for business files."

A pause.

Then:

"They were looking for Clara."

My stomach tightened.

"Who?"

Marcus looked toward the security cameras.

"The person who sent the message."

Jonah stepped forward.

"Where are they?"

Marcus hesitated.

"They're already inside the building."

The room went silent.

Security moved toward the doors.

Jonah grabbed my hand.

This time, I didn't pull away.

Not because everything was forgiven.

Not because I trusted him completely.

Because at that moment, I knew one thing.

Someone had spent years hiding the truth about me.

And now...

Someone was willing to kill to keep it hidden.

The lights suddenly went out.

Darkness covered the room.

A second later, every phone in the room received the same message.

I looked down.

One sentence.

One name.

May you like

And my blood turned cold.

The man standing beside Clara is not the man who saved her.
