Chapter 3 - The Secretary Behind the Mask

The photograph was lying on the table.

My name was written on the back.

Not typed.

Not printed.

Written by hand.

And somehow, that scared me more.

Because whoever wrote it didn't just know my name.

They knew me.

The woman standing across the room watched my reaction carefully.

She wasn't surprised.

She was waiting.

Jonah stepped closer and took the photograph from her hand before I could reach for it.

"Who are you?"

His voice was colder than before.

The woman smiled slightly.

"Still protecting everyone except yourself, Jonah?"

The room became silent.

Nobody spoke to him like that.

Nobody.

Jonah looked at the photograph.

Then at the woman.

"Answer me."

She didn't move.

"My name is Isabella Moretti."

A few people in the room gasped.

I didn't know why.

But Jonah did.

His expression changed instantly.

Marcus, standing nearby, stepped forward.

"That's impossible."

Isabella looked at him.

"People say that when they don't want something to be true."

I looked between them.

"What is happening?"

Nobody answered.

That was the moment I realized something.

Everyone in that room knew something.

Everyone except me.

I hated that feeling.

For years, I had been the person who knew everything about Jonah's life.

His meetings.

His enemies.

His business deals.

His private appointments.

But tonight, standing in the middle of his birthday party, I was the only person who knew nothing.

Jonah noticed my expression.

For a second, his anger disappeared.

"Clara."

I looked at him.

"Who is she?"

He didn't answer immediately.

And that hesitation hurt more than any answer could have.

Because Jonah Navarro was never speechless.

Not in negotiations.

Not in arguments.

Not when enemies threatened him.

But now...

He didn't know what to say to me.

Isabella slowly walked closer.

"She deserves to know."

Jonah's eyes turned sharp.

"Don't."

The single word carried a warning.

But Isabella didn't stop.

"You spent three years letting her stand beside you while hiding the truth."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Truth about what?"

Jonah looked away.

That was enough.

I understood.

There was something.

Something he had never told me.

Something connected to me.

"Jonah."

My voice was quieter than I expected.

"Why is my name on that photograph?"

Nobody moved.

The silence answered before he did.

Finally, Jonah looked at me.

"I don't know."

It was the first time I had ever heard uncertainty in his voice.

And somehow that frightened me more than his anger.

"You don't know?"

"No."

He looked at the photograph again.

"I've never seen it before."

Isabella laughed softly.

"Of course you haven't."

Jonah looked at her.

"Explain."

She took a step closer.

"Your father took that photo eighteen years ago."

My breath stopped.

Jonah's father.

A name rarely mentioned.

A man who had been gone for years.

A man connected to the beginning of Jonah's empire.

I looked at the picture in Jonah's hand.

"Why would your father have a picture of me?"

Isabella looked directly at me.

"Because he knew who you were before you did."

The words felt impossible.

I shook my head.

"No."

But my voice didn't sound convincing.

Because suddenly memories I had buried started coming back.

My childhood.

The unanswered questions.

The old documents my mother refused to discuss.

The strange way she reacted whenever someone mentioned the Navarro family.

I had always thought those things were unrelated.

Maybe they weren't.

Jonah noticed something in my face.

"You know something."

It wasn't a question.

I looked at him.

"I don't."

"Clara."

His voice softened.

Just slightly.

"Tell me."

I hated that he could still affect me.

Even after years of being invisible.

Even after tonight.

"I told you. I don't know."

Isabella watched us.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

"Your mother knew."

I froze.

"What?"

Isabella reached into her purse.

She pulled out another envelope.

This one was older.

Worn.

Like it had been carried around for years.

"Your mother left this before she disappeared."

My hands became cold.

"My mother didn't disappear."

Isabella looked at me with sympathy.

And that scared me.

Because people only looked at you like that when they knew something painful.

"Clara..."

She paused.

"Your mother wasn't running away."

Jonah stepped forward.

"Enough."

But Isabella continued.

"She was hiding you."

The words hit harder than I expected.

I felt like the entire room moved away from me.

All the noise disappeared.

The music.

The conversations.

The guests.

Everything.

Only those words remained.

She was hiding you.

"From who?"

I asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Jonah looked toward Marcus.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For me.

That was when I realized this wasn't about business.

This wasn't about the mafia.

This was about my life.

A life I thought I understood.

But maybe I never had.

Jonah took the envelope from Isabella.

His hands were tense.

"You should have brought this to me years ago."

Isabella smiled sadly.

"You weren't ready."

"I decide what I'm ready for."

"No."

She looked at him.

"That's exactly your problem."

Jonah stared at her.

"You think you control everything."

Nobody spoke.

Because she was right.

And Jonah knew it.

For the first time, someone had challenged him without fear.

Someone had looked directly at the most powerful man in the room and told him he was wrong.

Then Isabella turned toward me.

"Open it."

I looked at Jonah.

He didn't stop me.

That surprised me.

Slowly, I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

My mother's handwriting.

My hands started shaking.

I only read the first line.

And everything inside me froze.

"Clara, if you are reading this, it means Jonah Navarro has finally noticed you."

I looked up.

Jonah looked just as shocked.

Because my mother had written his name.

Before I had ever met him.

I continued reading.

"Do not trust the man standing beside you."

My eyes lifted.

Jonah was standing right in front of me.

The man I had protected.

The man I had admired.

The man who had finally looked at me.

And suddenly...

I didn't know if I should trust him.

The room felt smaller.

Jonah saw the fear in my eyes.

"Clara."

I stepped back.

"What did my mother know about you?"

He didn't answer.

Not immediately.

And that silence was worse than anything.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But then the message appeared.

One sentence.

One name.

My heart stopped.

May you like

Because the message said:

"Ask Jonah why he let your mother die."
