Chapter 4 - The Man Who Made Jonah Jealous

The message was still glowing on my phone.
Ask Jonah why he let your mother die.
I read it again.
Then again.
Like somehow the words would change if I looked long enough.
They didn't.
My fingers went cold.
The room around me felt distant.
Everyone was watching.
Jonah.
Marcus.
Isabella.
All of them.
But the only person I could see was Jonah.
The man who had spent three years standing beside me.
The man whose schedule I protected.
The man whose secrets I kept.
The man my mother had warned me about.
Jonah noticed the change in my expression.
"What did it say?"
I didn't answer.
Because saying it out loud would make it real.
He stepped closer.
"Clara."
I moved away.
A small movement.
But Jonah noticed.
Of course he noticed.
Tonight was the first night he had truly looked at me.
And now he was finally seeing fear.
Not admiration.
Not loyalty.
Fear.
"Who sent that message?" he asked.
I looked at him.
"You tell me."
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Enough for me to know something was hidden.
"You think I know?"
"I think everyone in this room knows something except me."
The words came out sharper than I intended.
But I couldn't stop.
For years, I had been the person everyone depended on.
The person who solved problems.
The person who stayed calm.
But nobody had ever asked what happened when I was the one who needed answers.
Jonah looked at Isabella.
"Leave."
She didn't move.
"Jonah—"
"I said leave."
His voice returned to the one everyone feared.
Cold.
Powerful.
Final.
But Isabella didn't look afraid.
She looked disappointed.
"You still think you can protect her by controlling everything."
Jonah's jaw tightened.
"I am protecting her."
"No."
Isabella looked at me.
"You're protecting yourself."
The words hit him.
I saw it.
For a second, Jonah Navarro looked like someone who had been accused of something he couldn't deny.
Marcus stepped between them.
"Not here."
Jonah ignored him.
His eyes stayed on Isabella.
"Tell me what you know."
Isabella slowly shook her head.
"Not until Clara hears the truth from you."
My heart sank.
I looked at Jonah.
"Then tell me."
Silence.
One second.
Two.
Three.
I waited.
I had waited years for him to notice me.
Now I was waiting for him to explain why my mother feared him.
Finally, Jonah spoke.
"I knew your mother."
I felt my chest tighten.
"How?"
He looked away.
That answer hurt more than anything.
Because Jonah avoided eye contact only when something mattered.
"When I was younger, my father had connections everywhere."
I listened.
"My family wasn't just involved in business."
I almost laughed.
Because everyone knew what the Navarro name meant.
Power.
Money.
Fear.
But Jonah continued.
"Your mother worked for my father."
My breath caught.
"She was your father's employee?"
"No."
His voice became quieter.
"She was someone my father trusted."
"Trusted with what?"
Jonah didn't answer.
And again, that silence told me too much.
I stepped closer.
"What happened to her?"
His face hardened.
"I don't know."
The answer made me angry.
"You don't know?"
"No."
He looked at me.
"She disappeared before I could find her."
I stared at him.
"But the message said you let her die."
Something flashed in his eyes.
Pain.
Real pain.
Not the controlled emotion he showed everyone.
"I spent years believing she was dead because of me."
The honesty surprised me.
Jonah Navarro admitting guilt was something I never expected.
"Why?"
He looked at the floor.
"Because my father was supposed to protect her."
The room became silent.
"And he didn't."
I didn't know what to say.
Because suddenly Jonah wasn't the powerful man everyone feared.
He was a son carrying something broken.
But I couldn't forget the message.
I couldn't forget my mother's handwriting.
I couldn't forget the warning.
Before I could ask another question, Daniel appeared beside me.
"Clara."
I turned.
He looked concerned.
"Are you okay?"
Jonah immediately looked at him.
And something changed.
The same jealousy I had seen earlier returned.
But this time, it was stronger.
Daniel noticed.
"You have a problem with me?"
Jonah didn't answer.
"Jonah."
I looked at him.
"This is not about Daniel."
But it was.
At least part of it was.
Because Jonah had spent years ignoring me.
And now he was looking at Daniel like he was a threat.
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Maybe I should take you home."
Jonah's eyes narrowed.
"No."
The word came instantly.
Everyone noticed.
Even me.
Daniel looked at him.
"Excuse me?"
Jonah stepped forward.
"She stays."
I stared at him.
"Jonah."
He looked at me.
Not angrily.
Almost desperately.
"Please."
That word shocked me.
Because Jonah Navarro didn't say please.
Not to anyone.
Not ever.
I didn't know what to do.
A few hours ago, I had been invisible.
Now two powerful men were standing in front of me, fighting over what I wanted.
And the strangest part was...
I didn't want either of them deciding for me.
"I can decide where I go."
Both men went quiet.
For the first time that night, I saw something change in Jonah's expression.
Respect.
Maybe even admiration.
I walked away.
I needed air.
I needed space.
I needed to remember who I was before this night.
I stepped onto the balcony.
The city stretched beneath me.
Beautiful.
Cold.
Unreachable.
A few minutes later, I heard footsteps.
I already knew who it was.
"You always come out here when you're overwhelmed."
I turned.
Jonah stood behind me.
I frowned.
"You noticed that?"
His expression softened.
"I notice more than you think."
I almost smiled.
Almost.
"That's funny."
"Why?"
"Because for three years, I thought you didn't notice me at all."
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
Good.
Maybe he needed to feel what I felt.
"I was wrong."
I looked away.
"About what?"
"About you."
The answer was quiet.
Honest.
"You were never invisible, Clara."
I looked back at him.
"Then why did you make me feel like I was?"
Jonah had no answer.
And for once...
I wasn't angry that he was silent.
I was angry because I knew he was thinking about it.
"I should have seen you sooner."
The admission was almost a whisper.
Before I could respond, the balcony door opened.
Marcus appeared.
His face was pale.
That immediately caught Jonah's attention.
"What happened?"
Marcus looked at me.
Then at Jonah.
"We found the person who sent the message."
Jonah's entire expression changed.
"Who?"
Marcus hesitated.
And that hesitation terrified me.
"Someone who shouldn't be alive."
Nobody spoke.
Jonah stepped forward.
"Name."
Marcus looked directly at me.
May you like
Then said:
"Clara's mother."
