Chapter 5 - The Brother Hidden In Plain Sight

The man stepped out of the vault and whispered: "Dante... you have been protecting the person who destroyed your family."

Dante Moretti stopped moving.

The entire room seemed to lose its sound.

The person standing in front of him was someone Dante had known for years.

Someone who had stood beside him during meetings.

Someone who had saved his life once.

Someone he trusted more than almost anyone.

Vincent Romano.

His closest advisor.

His most loyal friend.

The man who had been beside Dante since he took control of the Moretti empire.

Dante stared at him.

Unable to speak.

Vincent slowly walked toward the dining room.

His expression was not afraid.

That made everything worse.

Because Vincent knew exactly what he was doing.

"You."

Dante’s voice was quiet.

Dangerously quiet.

Vincent stopped.

"Yes."

The answer shocked everyone.

Dante’s men immediately reached for their weapons.

But Dante raised his hand.

Nobody moved.

Not yet.

Because Dante needed answers.

Not revenge.

Not anger.

Answers.

"How long?"

Vincent looked at him.

"How long what?"

"How long have you known?"

The room became silent.

Vincent looked at Maria.

Then Adrian.

Then Luca.

Finally, back at Dante.

"Almost twenty years."

Dante felt something break inside him.

Twenty years.

Two decades.

The people around him had been carrying the truth while he lived inside a lie.

"You stood beside me."

Vincent nodded.

"You taught me your father's business."

Vincent nodded again.

"You watched me become exactly what he wanted."

A painful expression appeared on Vincent’s face.

"Yes."

Dante stepped closer.

"Why?"

Vincent looked down.

"Because I was trying to protect you."

Dante laughed.

A cold, empty laugh.

"Everyone says that."

He pointed toward the room.

"My mother tried to protect me."

He looked at Adrian.

"He disappeared to protect me."

He looked at Luca.

"You stayed hidden to protect me."

Then he looked at Vincent.

"And you lied to me for twenty years to protect me."

Dante’s eyes hardened.

"At some point, people need to stop using that excuse."

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

Vincent slowly reached into his jacket.

Dante’s guards reacted instantly.

But Vincent pulled out something small.

A photograph.

He placed it on the table.

"This is why I stayed."

Dante looked down.

The photograph showed a young boy.

Maybe six years old.

Standing beside Maria.

Standing beside another man.

Dante recognized the man immediately.

His father.

But the boy was not Dante.

The child had dark hair.

The same eyes as Maria.

And on the back of the photograph was a date.

Three years before Dante was born.

Dante looked up.

"Who is he?"

Nobody spoke.

Maria covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

Adrian looked away.

Because he already knew.

Vincent answered.

"His name was Matteo Moretti."

Dante froze.

Another name.

Another brother.

Another person erased.

"Where is he?"

Vincent remained silent.

Dante stepped closer.

"Where is Matteo?"

Vincent’s expression changed.

For the first time, Dante saw fear.

Not fear of Dante.

Fear of what he was about to learn.

"Your father told everyone Matteo died."

Dante waited.

"But he didn't."

The words landed like a weapon.

Dante looked at Maria.

His mother was crying.

She did not deny it.

That hurt more than anything.

"Mom..."

Maria looked at him.

Her hands moved slowly.

Elena translated.

"She said she tried to find him."

Dante listened.

"She said your father made sure nobody could."

Dante looked at Vincent.

"What happened to him?"

Vincent took a deep breath.

"Your father discovered Matteo knew too much."

"About what?"

"About the family."

Dante shook his head.

"That means nothing."

Vincent looked at him.

"It means everything."

He pointed toward the documents.

"Your father did not build the Moretti empire alone."

Dante stayed silent.

"He had help."

"From who?"

Vincent looked at the photograph.

"From people who were never supposed to exist."

The answer confused Dante.

Then Vincent continued.

"Your grandfather had secrets before your father inherited everything."

The room became colder.

"Secret accounts."

"Hidden businesses."

"People who disappeared."

Dante stared.

"You are saying my entire family was built on lies."

Vincent nodded.

"Yes."

The truth was becoming heavier.

Not because it was impossible.

Because it explained everything.

His father's obsession.

His mother's fear.

The missing records.

The erased names.

Dante looked at Adrian.

"If Matteo existed..."

Adrian interrupted.

"He was the first son."

Dante looked at him.

"The original heir."

The words stayed in the air.

For years, Dante believed he was chosen.

The special one.

The successor.

But now he understood.

Maybe he was never the beginning.

Maybe he was only the replacement.

A replacement created after someone else was removed.

Dante walked toward the table.

He picked up the old hospital bracelet.

The name was still visible.

Matteo Moretti.

His brother.

A person he never knew existed.

A person his family buried without a grave.

Then Dante noticed something else.

A small mark carved into the bracelet.

A symbol.

He had seen it before.

On his father’s old documents.

On hidden files.

On the locked door inside his childhood home.

The symbol of the Moretti family vault.

"What is this?"

Vincent looked at it.

His face changed.

"Where did you get that?"

Dante held up the bracelet.

"Why?"

Vincent took a step back.

"Because Matteo was wearing that the last time I saw him."

Dante stared.

"The last time?"

Vincent looked at Maria.

Then at the floor.

"I was there."

The room went quiet.

"The night he disappeared."

Dante’s expression hardened.

"You were there?"

Vincent nodded.

"I was seventeen."

"And you let it happen?"

Vincent closed his eyes.

"No."

The answer came quickly.

"I tried to stop it."

Dante waited.

Vincent continued.

"Your father found out Matteo had copied files from the family archives."

"What files?"

"The ones proving what he had done."

Dante’s eyes narrowed.

"And?"

Vincent looked at him.

"Matteo planned to expose him."

The room went silent.

"Your father sent people after him."

Dante’s hands tightened.

"Who?"

Vincent did not answer.

Because he knew the answer would hurt.

"Who?"

Vincent looked at Dante.

"The person who gave the order..."

He stopped.

Dante waited.

"The person who gave the order was not your father."

Everyone froze.

Dante’s eyes narrowed.

"Then who?"

Vincent looked toward the family record.

Toward the erased name.

Toward the person nobody wanted to mention.

"Your grandfather."

Dante felt the ground disappear.

His grandfather.

The man who had been remembered as the founder.

The man whose portrait hung in every Moretti building.

The man everyone respected.

Vincent continued.

"And your father spent his entire life trying to hide what his own father did."

Dante looked at Adrian.

"Then why did he erase Matteo?"

Adrian answered quietly.

"Because Matteo survived."

Dante turned.

"What?"

Adrian stepped forward.

"Your father thought Matteo was dead."

A pause.

"But he wasn't."

The room became silent.

Dante felt his heartbeat increase.

"Where is he?"

Nobody answered.

Then Maria suddenly stood.

She looked toward the restaurant entrance.

Her face turned pale.

She began signing desperately.

Elena watched.

Then whispered:

"She said..."

Elena looked terrified.

"She said Matteo is here."

Dante slowly turned toward the door.

The handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

Everyone reached for their weapons.

The door opened slowly.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Scarred.

Carrying the same symbol carved into the bracelet around his neck.

He looked directly at Dante.

May you like

And whispered:

"Little brother..."
