Chapter 2 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The old man standing in the doorway whispered: "Dante... you were never supposed to find that bracelet."

Dante Moretti stared at him without blinking.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The entire room seemed frozen between the past and the present.

Because the man standing there was not a stranger.

He was someone Dante recognized.

Someone whose face had appeared in old photographs hidden inside his father’s office.

Someone he had spent years believing was gone.

The man slowly stepped into the private dining room.

His clothes were simple.

A dark coat.

Old leather shoes.

Nothing about him looked dangerous.

But his eyes carried something Dante had seen many times before.

The eyes of someone carrying a secret too heavy to bury.

Dante’s security team immediately moved forward.

"Stop."

Dante raised his hand.

The guards froze.

Everyone knew that command.

When Dante Moretti gave an order, even armed men stopped breathing.

His attention never left the stranger.

"Who are you?"

The old man looked at Maria.

Not Dante.

That detail bothered him more than anything.

Because the man looked at his mother like someone who had known her for decades.

Maria’s face changed.

The sadness in her eyes became fear.

She gripped the edge of the table.

Her hands began moving quickly.

Elena immediately stepped closer.

She watched Maria’s gestures.

Then her expression became pale.

"What did she say?" Dante demanded.

Elena hesitated.

Dante looked at her.

"Tell me."

The young waitress swallowed.

"She said... she thought you would never come back to this room."

Dante frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Elena looked at Maria again.

The elderly woman continued signing.

Slowly this time.

Carefully.

Like she wanted every word understood.

Elena translated.

"She said your father promised this secret would stay hidden forever."

The room became silent again.

Dante looked toward the old man.

"How do you know my father?"

The stranger lowered his eyes.

"My name is Luca Ferraro."

The name meant nothing at first.

Then Dante remembered.

A folder.

A name written in his father’s private records.

A man who had disappeared twenty years ago.

A man his father had accused of betrayal.

Dante stepped closer.

"You died."

Luca gave a bitter smile.

"That is what your father wanted everyone to believe."

Dante felt anger rise inside him.

His father’s name had always represented strength.

Honor.

Family.

But tonight, every piece of that image was breaking apart.

"My father told me you betrayed him."

Luca looked at Maria.

Then back at Dante.

"Your father told you many things."

The words hit harder than Dante expected.

Because they were true.

His entire life had been built on stories told by someone else.

Stories he never questioned.

Stories from a man he trusted.

Dante looked down at the bracelet in his hand.

The hidden message.

The photograph.

The stranger standing before him.

Everything connected.

But he still didn’t understand why.

"What happened twenty years ago?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Maria looked at Elena.

Then pointed toward Dante.

Elena understood.

"She wants him to know everything."

Dante pulled out a chair.

"Then everyone sits."

Nobody argued.

Not even his men.

Because for the first time in years, Dante Moretti was not acting like a mafia boss.

He was acting like a son searching for the truth.

Luca sat across from him.

Maria stayed beside Dante.

Her hand never left his.

The old man took a deep breath.

"Your father was not the man you believed him to be."

Dante’s jaw tightened.

"Be careful."

Luca looked directly into his eyes.

"I was there the night your father changed everything."

The room went quiet.

"What night?"

"The night your mother tried to leave."

Dante looked at Maria.

His mother lowered her head.

A memory.

A painful one.

One she had carried alone.

"Leave?"

Dante’s voice became softer.

"My mother never left."

Luca nodded.

"Because she was stopped."

Dante stood immediately.

The chairs scraped against the floor.

"Who stopped her?"

Luca didn’t answer.

He looked at Maria.

Maria closed her eyes.

She already knew.

She had been waiting for this moment.

Elena translated the signs.

"She said... it was someone inside the family."

Dante froze.

Inside the family.

Those words carried a different meaning for him.

Family was everything.

Family was loyalty.

Family was blood.

He had built his entire empire around that belief.

Luca continued.

"Your father discovered your mother had proof."

"Proof of what?"

"The truth about how your family’s fortune was created."

Dante stared at him.

He had heard rumors.

Everyone had.

Every powerful family had enemies who created stories.

But this was different.

Because his mother believed it.

And his mother had never lied to him.

"What proof?"

Luca reached inside his coat.

Dante’s guards immediately reacted.

But Luca slowly removed a small envelope.

He placed it on the table.

"This."

Dante opened it.

Inside was an old photograph.

His father.

Maria.

And another woman.

A woman Dante had never seen.

But the expression on his mother’s face told him she knew exactly who she was.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

The same year Dante was born.

And one sentence.

"She was the first person your father betrayed."

Dante looked at Maria.

His mother’s eyes filled with tears.

"Who is she?"

Maria began signing.

Elena watched.

Then her hands slowly dropped.

The waitress looked confused.

Then frightened.

"What?"

Dante stepped toward her.

"What did she say?"

Elena looked at him.

"She said..."

Her voice became quiet.

"She said that woman was the reason your father wanted you to become exactly like him."

Dante stared at the photograph.

A cold feeling moved through him.

Because suddenly he understood something.

His father had not raised him to protect the family.

He had raised him to continue a plan.

A plan Dante never agreed to.

A plan built before he was old enough to choose.

The restaurant lights flickered.

Everyone turned.

One of Dante’s men entered quickly.

"Boss."

Dante looked up.

"What?"

The man looked nervous.

"We checked the security cameras."

"And?"

The guard hesitated.

"The person who sent you the photo..."

Dante waited.

"Was inside this restaurant before you arrived."

Silence.

Dante slowly turned toward the room.

Every person stopped moving.

Every person avoided his eyes.

Then his phone vibrated again.

Another unknown message.

This time there was no photo.

Only words.

"I know your mother told you."

Dante stared at the screen.

A second message appeared.

"But she never told you who helped her."

Dante looked toward Maria.

Her face suddenly changed.

Because she knew exactly who it was.

The private room door slowly opened behind him.

And a familiar voice whispered:

"Don Dante..."

May you like

Dante turned around.

The person standing there was holding an old family record with his name written on it.
