Chapter 4 - The Brother Who Returned From The Shadows

The man inside the family vault whispered: "I was never trying to steal your empire, Dante. I was trying to save you from it."

Dante Moretti stared at the security screen.

The person standing inside the vault was not a stranger.

It was Adrian Vale.

The same man sitting across from him.

The same man claiming to be his brother.

But that was impossible.

Because the security footage showed Adrian entering the vault five minutes earlier.

And Adrian had never left the dining room.

Dante looked from the screen to the man in front of him.

For the first time in his life, he felt something he hated.

Uncertainty.

"Explain."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Everyone in the room knew that was when Dante was most dangerous.

Adrian looked at the screen.

Then at the family record.

Then finally at Maria.

"Your father created this system before I disappeared."

Dante’s eyes narrowed.

"My father is dead."

"Yes."

Adrian nodded.

"And that is why it activated."

Dante stepped closer.

"You expect me to believe my dead father built a security system that shows a man who is standing right here?"

Adrian did not answer immediately.

That silence bothered Dante.

Because silence was what started this entire nightmare.

His mother’s silence.

The missing years.

The erased records.

The secrets everyone protected.

Luca finally spoke.

"Because the person in the vault is not Adrian."

Dante turned.

"What?"

Luca looked toward the screen.

"The person your father feared most."

The image on the monitor moved.

The figure inside the vault turned slightly.

The camera angle changed.

The face was still hidden.

But the posture.

The movement.

The confidence.

It reminded Dante of someone.

Someone he knew.

Someone he trusted.

Dante’s phone vibrated again.

Another message.

Unknown number.

A video file.

He opened it.

The room watched as the screen displayed an old recording.

His father appeared.

Younger.

Stronger.

Sitting behind the same desk where Dante had spent countless hours learning the family business.

Dante stopped breathing.

Because his father looked directly into the camera.

As if he knew Dante would eventually watch it.

"If you are seeing this, then Adrian has returned."

Dante’s expression changed.

The room became completely silent.

His father continued.

"Do not trust him."

Adrian looked away.

Maria closed her eyes.

Dante continued watching.

"My first mistake was believing blood made people loyal."

His father paused.

"My second mistake was believing Dante would never question me."

The video ended.

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Dante looked at Adrian.

"You knew about this."

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

"And you still came here."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Adrian looked at him.

"Because your father was right about one thing."

Dante waited.

"He knew you would eventually question him."

The answer confused him.

Adrian continued.

"He spent years preparing you for this moment."

Dante laughed quietly.

A cold laugh.

"My father prepared me?"

"Yes."

"For what?"

Adrian looked at the family record.

"To destroy the person who actually controlled your family."

Dante looked around.

Everyone seemed to know more than him.

Again.

That feeling returned.

The feeling of being the last person to learn the truth about his own life.

Maria reached for his hand.

She began signing.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Elena translated.

"She said your father was afraid."

Dante looked at his mother.

"Afraid of who?"

Maria continued.

Elena’s expression changed.

"She said..."

The waitress hesitated.

Dante looked at her.

"Say it."

Elena swallowed.

"She said your father was afraid of your uncle."

Dante froze.

"My uncle?"

Nobody spoke.

Because Dante knew exactly what that meant.

His father had a brother.

Another person connected to the family.

Another secret hidden from him.

Luca opened the family record again.

Inside was a page that had been folded and sealed.

He handed it to Dante.

"This was removed from every official copy."

Dante opened it.

The page contained a family tree.

At the top was his grandfather.

Below him were two sons.

His father.

And another name.

Marco Moretti.

Dante stared.

"Who is Marco?"

Adrian answered quietly.

"The man who built the empire before your father."

Dante looked up.

"Then why have I never heard of him?"

"Because your father erased him."

The room became colder.

"Why?"

Adrian looked toward Maria.

"Because Marco knew the truth."

Dante felt anger rising.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

He slammed the document onto the table.

"The truth."

He looked at everyone.

"What truth?"

Nobody answered.

Then Maria stood.

Slowly.

For the first time that night, she looked different.

Not like a mother hiding a secret.

Like someone who was finally ready to stop running.

She reached into her purse.

She removed a small wooden box.

Dante had never seen it before.

She placed it on the table.

Her hands trembled.

Elena looked at her.

"She said this belonged to your brother."

Dante stared.

"Adrian?"

Maria shook her head.

Adrian looked confused.

"No."

The room froze.

Dante looked between them.

"Then whose?"

Maria touched Dante’s chest.

Then pointed toward the box.

Elena translated.

"Your mother said..."

She stopped.

Dante’s voice became softer.

"What?"

Elena looked at the box.

"She said this belonged to the son your father never wanted you to know existed."

Dante’s eyes widened.

Another son.

Another brother.

How many secrets had his family buried?

Adrian stepped back.

"No."

Maria looked at him.

Her eyes filled with sadness.

Because Adrian understood.

Dante opened the wooden box.

Inside was a small hospital bracelet.

Old.

Faded.

The name was barely visible.

But Dante could read it.

His hands froze.

Because the name written there was not Adrian.

It was another name.

A name that had been removed from every record.

A name his father had tried to erase completely.

Dante looked at Maria.

His voice barely came out.

"Who is this?"

Maria began signing.

Her hands shook.

Elena watched.

Then whispered:

"She said..."

Dante waited.

"She said he was the son your father thought was dead."

Nobody spoke.

Dante looked at Adrian.

The old man’s face had changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

Because he knew something Dante did not.

The security monitor suddenly flashed again.

The person inside the vault moved closer to the camera.

The face became visible.

Dante stared at the screen.

Because the person looking back at him was not a stranger.

It was someone from his childhood.

Someone who had been standing beside him for years.

May you like

Someone he trusted completely.

And then the vault door opened from the inside.
