Chapter 9 - The Child Hidden From The World

The hospital door was already open.
Sebastian stopped.
Lena stood beside him.
Neither of them moved.
The abandoned building was supposed to be empty.
No electricity.
No staff.
No patients.
Nothing.
But someone had opened the door from the inside.
Daniel raised his weapon.
"Someone is here."
Sebastian looked at the dark hallway beyond the entrance.
"Stay close."
They stepped inside.
The smell hit them first.
Old medicine.
Dust.
And something else.
Something familiar.
Lena touched the wall.
"This place..."
Her voice became quiet.
"I’ve been here."
Sebastian looked at her.
"What?"
She shook her head.
"I don’t remember."
She walked slowly through the hallway.
Her eyes moved across the broken signs.
The empty rooms.
The faded paint.
A strange feeling followed her.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Like a forgotten dream trying to return.
"This was the hospital."
Sebastian looked at her.
"The one from the photograph?"
She nodded.
"My mother brought me here."
Daniel searched the rooms.
"Why would she bring you here?"
Lena looked down.
"I don’t know."
Then she saw it.
A small drawing taped inside a broken cabinet.
A child’s drawing.
Two figures.
A woman.
A little girl.
And a boy.
The boy was holding the girl’s hand.
On the bottom were two names written in childish handwriting.
Lena.
Seb.
Sebastian froze.
Lena looked at him.
"You knew me."
He stared at the drawing.
"No."
But his voice wasn’t certain.
He picked it up carefully.
His hands shook.
Because somewhere deep inside him...
Something remembered.
The memory came suddenly.
Not like a thought.
Like a wound opening.
A hospital hallway.
A young girl crying.
A woman kneeling beside him.
A voice saying:
"Promise me you’ll protect her."
Young Sebastian.
Ten years old.
Holding another child’s hand.
Lena.
He stepped backward.
Lena noticed.
"What happened?"
Sebastian looked at her.
"I remember."
The words came out quietly.
Daniel moved closer.
"What?"
Sebastian looked around the hallway.
"I was here."
Silence.
"I came here before."
Lena’s eyes widened.
"With my mother?"
He nodded slowly.
"Yes."
The memory returned in pieces.
Arthur Vale walking quickly.
A woman crying.
A doctor.
A man arguing.
Thomas Reed.
But younger.
Angrier.
Sebastian closed his eyes.
"I heard them fighting."
"Who?"
"My father."
A pause.
"And Thomas."
They found the old records room behind a locked door.
The key from Lena’s envelope opened it.
Inside were hundreds of files.
Most damaged.
Most destroyed.
Someone had tried to erase everything.
But they had missed one shelf.
A shelf hidden behind the wall.
Sebastian pulled out the first file.
The name on it made him stop.
Project Guardian.
Daniel looked confused.
"What is that?"
Sebastian opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Children.
Medical reports.
Adoption records.
Hidden identities.
Lena stepped closer.
Her face changed.
"What is this?"
Sebastian turned the pages.
"This wasn’t a hospital."
He looked at the files.
"It was a program."
"For what?"
He didn’t answer immediately.
Because he saw the names.
Children who disappeared.
Children whose identities changed.
Children who were placed with powerful families.
Lena looked at the papers.
"Why?"
Sebastian turned another page.
And there it was.
The truth.
The reason everyone had been hiding.
A list of children.
Their original names.
Their new names.
One name was highlighted.
Sebastian Vale.
But underneath it was another.
His real identity.
A name he had never heard.
Elias Carter.
Lena looked at him.
"Sebastian..."
He stared at the page.
The man he had been his entire life was suddenly someone else.
Elias Carter.
Not Sebastian Vale.
Not Arthur Vale’s son.
A child taken.
A child renamed.
A child hidden.
A sound came from the hallway.
Everyone froze.
Footsteps.
Someone was approaching.
Sebastian closed the file.
Daniel turned toward the door.
"Who is there?"
No answer.
The footsteps stopped.
Then a voice came.
A woman’s voice.
Older.
Tired.
Familiar.
"Lena."
Lena’s face changed.
The color disappeared from her face.
Her hand moved to her mouth.
"No."
Sebastian looked at her.
"Lena?"
Tears filled her eyes.
Because there was only one person who could say her name like that.
The woman stepped into the doorway.
She looked older.
Different.
But the same.
Lena couldn’t move.
Her whole life had prepared her for this moment.
And somehow, she was still not ready.
"Mom?"
The woman cried.
"Lena."
Then she stepped forward.
Lena ran.
For ten years, she had imagined this moment.
She had imagined anger.
Questions.
Pain.
But when her mother held her, all she could do was cry.
Sebastian watched silently.
Because for the first time, Lena wasn’t alone.
Later, inside the old hospital office, they sat together.
Lena’s mother.
Sebastian.
Daniel.
The woman introduced herself again.
"Claire Hale."
Sebastian looked at her.
"You were alive."
Claire nodded.
"I was."
"Why did you leave her?"
The question was sharp.
But Claire accepted it.
"Because staying would have killed her."
Lena looked down.
"You let me believe you were dead."
Claire closed her eyes.
"I know."
The pain in her voice was real.
"I hated myself for it."
"Then why?"
Claire looked at Sebastian.
"Because of him."
Sebastian frowned.
"Me?"
Claire nodded.
"Because of what Arthur discovered."
She opened an old folder.
Inside was a photograph.
A baby.
Sebastian.
"Your real father was not Arthur Vale."
Sebastian remained silent.
"I know."
Claire looked surprised.
"You found out."
"Yes."
She sighed.
"Then you know about Elias Carter."
Hearing the name spoken aloud made everything real.
Sebastian looked away.
"Who was he?"
Claire hesitated.
"The man who saved both of you."
Lena looked confused.
"Both of us?"
Claire nodded.
"Your father and Elias were connected."
Sebastian looked at her.
"Explain."
Claire opened another file.
Inside was a photograph.
Two men.
Young.
One was Arthur Vale.
The other was someone Sebastian had never seen.
But the resemblance was undeniable.
His own face.
His own eyes.
"This is your father."
Sebastian stared.
"Who?"
Claire whispered:
"Adrian Carter."
The room became silent.
A name.
A face.
A truth.
Everything Sebastian had lost.
Everything that had been hidden.
Claire continued.
"Adrian discovered what Thomas was doing."
"What was he doing?"
Claire looked at Lena.
Then Sebastian.
"He was replacing identities."
Daniel frowned.
"For what purpose?"
Claire’s expression darkened.
"Power."
She placed another file down.
"Thomas didn’t want money."
Sebastian opened it.
Inside were records of powerful families.
Politicians.
Business owners.
People whose identities had been changed.
Claire whispered:
"He wanted to control who people became."
Lena looked at her mother.
"And my father?"
Claire looked away.
"Your father helped him."
Lena froze.
"What?"
Sebastian noticed Claire’s hesitation.
"Who?"
Claire looked at both of them.
Then she said:
"The person who started Project Guardian."
A pause.
"The person who ordered Adrian Carter’s death."
Sebastian stood.
"Who?"
Claire’s eyes filled with fear.
Because even after all these years...
She was still afraid of the answer.
"Your mother."
Silence.
Sebastian froze.
"My mother?"
Claire nodded.
"She was the one who created the program."
Before anyone could respond, the lights in the hospital suddenly turned on.
The old monitors came alive.
A message appeared on every screen.
One sentence.
WELCOME HOME, ELIAS.
Sebastian stared at the screen.
May you like
Then another line appeared.
YOUR MOTHER HAS BEEN WAITING FOR YOU.
