Chapter 4 - The Room Beneath Bellhaven

Sebastian stared at the basement door.

The message from Lena was still glowing on his phone.

Don’t open it.

Three simple words.

But they carried something he had rarely heard from anyone.

Fear.

Not fear of him.

Fear for him.

Daniel stood beside him, staring at the locked door.

"Sebastian."

He didn’t answer.

"Maybe we should wait."

Sebastian looked at him.

"Wait for what?"

Daniel hesitated.

"More information."

Sebastian looked back at the door.

For years, people had waited for him to make decisions.

They waited for his approval.

His permission.

His judgment.

But tonight, someone had built a secret room underneath his own restaurant.

Someone had used his name.

Someone had taken Lena.

And someone believed they could control what he discovered.

He reached for the handle.

"Sebastian."

The warning in Daniel’s voice was clear.

Sebastian ignored it.

He pulled.

The lock broke.

The door opened.

Cold air rushed upward.

A hidden staircase disappeared into darkness.

Daniel turned on his flashlight.

"This isn’t on the building plans."

Sebastian stepped down.

"That means someone wanted it hidden."

The deeper they went, the quieter everything became.

The sounds of the restaurant disappeared.

The music.

The voices.

The city.

Everything was gone.

Only footsteps remained.

At the bottom of the stairs was another door.

This one was different.

Old metal.

Heavy.

And covered with scratches.

Sebastian touched the surface.

Someone had tried to escape.

Daniel noticed it too.

"Someone was locked down here."

Sebastian didn’t respond.

Because he already knew.

The question wasn’t whether someone had been trapped.

The question was who.

He opened the door.

Inside was a small room.

A desk.

Several old files.

A computer.

And photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Sebastian walked closer.

The first photograph stopped him.

Lena.

She was younger.

Maybe nineteen.

Standing beside a woman.

Her mother.

Sebastian picked it up.

Behind the photograph was a date.

Ten years earlier.

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

"That’s Lena’s mother."

Sebastian nodded.

"But why is she here?"

Daniel moved toward the desk.

"I think we should find out."

The files were organized by names.

Employees.

Business partners.

Politicians.

Even people Sebastian knew.

His expression became colder.

"This isn’t a random room."

Daniel opened one folder.

His face changed.

"Sebastian."

Sebastian looked over.

Daniel handed him the file.

The name on the front made him stop.

LENA HALE.

Inside were pages.

Medical records.

Photographs.

Reports.

Every detail of her life.

Someone had been watching her.

For years.

Sebastian flipped through the pages.

Then he found something.

A handwritten note.

Not from an investigator.

Not from an employee.

From Lena’s mother.

The handwriting was shaky.

But the words were clear.

If anyone finds this, protect my daughter. Do not trust Thomas.

Sebastian stared at the sentence.

Thomas.

The restaurant manager.

The man who claimed he knew nothing.

Daniel looked at him.

"Sebastian."

He didn’t answer.

Because another page had fallen from the folder.

A list.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

At the bottom was a signature.

A signature Sebastian recognized.

His own father’s.

Lena sat in the abandoned building, unable to look away from the symbol on the wall.

Her mother’s symbol.

The one she thought was meaningless.

The one she believed was just a strange habit.

But now it was everywhere.

On documents.

On walls.

On the files hidden beneath Bellhaven.

"Tell me the truth."

Her voice shook.

The older man watched her carefully.

"The truth is dangerous."

"I’ve spent my whole life believing a lie."

Silence.

Then he reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

And placed it on the table.

Lena stared at it.

"What is that?"

"Something your mother left behind."

Her hands froze.

"My mother?"

He nodded.

"She knew one day someone would come looking."

Lena slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The paper was old.

The handwriting was familiar.

The first words almost made her collapse.

My dear Lena.

Her eyes filled with tears.

She hadn’t seen her mother’s handwriting in ten years.

She read the first lines.

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.

Her hand covered her mouth.

The man looked away.

Giving her a moment.

The letter continued.

There are people who will tell you I abandoned you. They are lying.

Lena’s breathing became uneven.

Your father was not the man you were told he was.

She stopped.

Father.

A word she had almost forgotten.

Her mother had never spoken about him.

Not once.

The next sentence made her blood run cold.

The Vale family knows the truth.

Lena dropped the letter.

Sebastian.

His family.

The man she met only days ago.

The man who had looked at her like she mattered.

Was connected to everything.

"Why?"

The man looked at her.

"Because your mother discovered something she wasn’t supposed to discover."

"What?"

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked toward the door.

His face changed.

Someone was coming.

Fast.

"Who is that?"

The man moved immediately.

He grabbed the letter.

"What are you doing?"

"Leaving."

"But I need answers."

He looked at her.

"You need to survive first."

The footsteps outside grew louder.

Another voice echoed through the building.

"Lena."

Her face went pale.

She knew that voice.

Marcus.

The man who had threatened her.

The man who had warned her.

The older man grabbed her arm.

"Listen carefully."

Lena looked at him.

"When Sebastian finds you, don’t tell him everything."

"Why?"

The man’s eyes hardened.

"Because you don’t know which side he’s on."

The door shook.

Marcus was outside.

"Open the door!"

Lena stepped back.

The older man disappeared through a hidden passage behind the wall.

Leaving her alone.

The door cracked.

Wood splintered.

"Lena!"

She looked around desperately.

No escape.

No hiding place.

The door broke open.

Marcus entered.

But he wasn’t alone.

Two men followed him.

Lena backed away.

Marcus smiled.

"I told you."

Her voice was barely audible.

"What do you want?"

Marcus looked at the letter still in her hand.

Then his smile disappeared.

"You found it."

Sebastian returned to the basement room.

The file was still open on the desk.

His father’s signature stared back at him.

A signature connected to Lena’s mother.

Connected to the secret.

Connected to the reason someone wanted Lena silent.

Daniel searched through more documents.

Then suddenly stopped.

"Sebastian."

His voice was different.

"What?"

Daniel turned the computer screen around.

A hidden folder had appeared.

Created only minutes ago.

The title was simple.

For Sebastian.

Sebastian clicked it.

A video file opened.

The screen showed an old recording.

A woman sat in front of the camera.

Lena’s mother.

Sebastian froze.

Because she wasn’t alone.

A man sat beside her.

A man he recognized immediately.

His father.

The recording started.

Lena’s mother looked directly into the camera.

And whispered:

"Sebastian, if you are watching this, it means Lena has already found out the truth..."

May you like

The video paused.

Then another figure appeared behind them.
