Chapter 11 - The Voice From The Past

The lights went out.

Again.

But this time, nobody moved.

Because everyone heard the voice.

A voice that should not exist.

A voice Sebastian had spent his entire life trying to remember.

"That’s enough, Thomas."

The room became completely silent.

Thomas turned toward the darkness.

For the first time since he entered the hospital, his confidence disappeared.

His face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

Sebastian noticed.

And that scared him more than anything else.

Because Thomas Reed was not afraid of many things.

A figure stepped into the room.

Slowly.

The emergency lights flickered.

And Sebastian saw the face.

His entire world stopped.

"Father?"

The man standing in front of him looked older.

Much older.

But Sebastian knew that face.

Arthur Vale.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

The man who raised him.

The man whose voice had guided every decision Sebastian ever made.

Arthur looked at him.

And his eyes filled with sadness.

"Elias."

Nobody spoke.

Not Sebastian.

Not Lena.

Not Daniel.

Only Thomas moved.

"You were supposed to disappear."

Arthur looked at him.

"I did."

Thomas stepped back.

"No."

His voice became sharper.

"You were supposed to stay buried."

Arthur ignored him.

His eyes remained on Sebastian.

"I’m sorry."

Those two words hurt more than any explanation.

Sebastian stared.

"You’re alive."

Arthur nodded.

"I am."

"All these years?"

"I was protecting you."

Sebastian laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

Arthur looked down.

"I know."

Sebastian stepped forward.

"Then explain."

The room became tense.

Because everyone wanted the same answer.

Why?

Why had so many people lied?

Why had so many lives been destroyed?

Arthur looked at Lena.

Then at Claire.

Then back at Sebastian.

"Because Thomas was right about one thing."

Thomas smiled.

"Finally."

Arthur continued.

"This was never about money."

Sebastian waited.

"It was about control."

Arthur walked toward the old table.

He picked up the photograph Thomas had shown earlier.

The one showing the baby.

The one that started another mystery.

"You were not born a Vale."

Sebastian already knew that.

"But you were not stolen either."

Arthur looked at him.

"You were saved."

Sebastian frowned.

"From what?"

Arthur looked toward Thomas.

"From him."

Thomas shook his head.

"You still tell yourself that story?"

Arthur’s expression hardened.

"Because it’s true."

Thomas laughed.

"You were always good at making yourself the hero."

Claire stepped forward.

"Stop."

Everyone looked at her.

She looked at Arthur.

"Tell them everything."

Arthur was quiet.

Then he nodded.

"Twenty-eight years ago, Project Guardian was created."

Sebastian listened.

"At first, it was meant to protect children from dangerous situations."

Lena looked at him.

"Then what happened?"

Arthur’s face changed.

"Power happened."

He looked at Thomas.

"People realized identity could be manipulated."

Daniel frowned.

"You mean they could erase people."

Arthur nodded.

"Names. Records. Families."

Sebastian looked at the files.

"So I was one of them."

Arthur shook his head.

"No."

The answer was immediate.

"You were the reason I tried to destroy it."

The room became quiet.

Arthur continued.

"Your biological father, Adrian Carter, discovered what Thomas was doing."

Sebastian listened carefully.

"He tried to expose him."

Thomas looked away.

Arthur continued.

"Adrian knew too much."

Lena lowered her eyes.

"My father..."

Arthur nodded.

"He was killed because he refused to stay silent."

Sebastian’s hands tightened.

"And me?"

Arthur looked at him.

"Your mother died trying to protect you."

The words shocked him.

"My mother?"

Arthur nodded.

"Margaret was not innocent."

Sebastian looked down.

"Then why did she raise me?"

"Because she regretted what she had done."

A pause.

"She wanted to protect the child she helped take."

Sebastian looked confused.

"Take?"

Arthur sighed.

"Your original identity was going to be erased completely."

He pointed at the files.

"Thomas wanted you to become a Vale."

"Why?"

"Because the Vale name gave him power."

Sebastian understood.

A powerful family.

A powerful identity.

A perfect disguise.

Arthur continued.

"Margaret helped him."

Silence.

"Then she changed her mind."

Sebastian looked at him.

"And you?"

Arthur’s eyes became sad.

"I chose you."

The words were simple.

But they carried everything.

"I knew you weren’t my biological son."

Arthur stepped closer.

"But you were my son."

Sebastian looked away.

Because that was the one truth he wanted to believe.

The one thing that still felt real.

Thomas suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

"You really believe him?"

Sebastian looked at Thomas.

Thomas smiled.

"You think Arthur saved you?"

Arthur looked at him.

"Enough."

"No."

Thomas stepped forward.

"He deserves the truth."

Sebastian’s eyes narrowed.

"What truth?"

Thomas looked at Arthur.

"Tell him."

Arthur stayed silent.

Thomas smiled.

"Tell him who actually gave him away."

Sebastian looked between them.

"Arthur."

No answer.

"Who?"

Arthur closed his eyes.

And that was enough.

Sebastian took a step back.

"Who?"

Arthur whispered:

"Your birth mother."

The room froze.

Lena looked shocked.

"What?"

Arthur looked at Sebastian.

"She made the choice."

Sebastian’s face changed.

"No."

"She believed it was the only way to keep you alive."

"No."

His voice became louder.

"She gave me away?"

Arthur nodded.

"She thought you would be safer without knowing who you were."

Sebastian looked at the floor.

Twenty-eight years.

A fake name.

A fake history.

A fake family.

But one thing remained.

Someone had chosen to leave him.

Later, after Thomas was temporarily contained by Daniel and the security team, Sebastian stood alone in the hospital hallway.

Lena found him there.

She didn’t say anything at first.

She just stood beside him.

Finally, she whispered:

"You’re angry."

Sebastian looked ahead.

"Yes."

"At Arthur?"

A pause.

"No."

Lena looked at him.

"Then who?"

Sebastian answered quietly.

"Myself."

She frowned.

"Why?"

"Because I spent my entire life believing I was powerful."

He looked at his hands.

"But I never knew who I was."

Lena stepped closer.

"You know now."

He looked at her.

"Do I?"

She smiled sadly.

"Yes."

"How?"

"Because everyone else spent years trying to decide who you were."

She touched the old photograph.

"But you’re the only one who gets to decide now."

Sebastian looked at her.

For the first time, he didn’t see her as someone he had to protect.

He saw someone who understood him.

Someone who had lost everything too.

Before leaving the hospital, Arthur gave Sebastian one final file.

"I kept this because I promised Adrian."

Sebastian opened it.

Inside was a letter.

From his biological father.

The first line made him stop.

My son Elias.

His hands shook.

He read.

If you ever find this, it means the truth survived.

I need you to know something.

You were never a mistake.

Sebastian swallowed.

The letter continued.

The people who changed your name believed they owned your future.

They were wrong.

The final paragraph was short.

But it changed everything.

There is one person left who knows the full truth.

Sebastian looked up.

"Who?"

Arthur’s face became serious.

"I don’t know."

Sebastian looked back at the letter.

At the bottom was a name.

A name written by Adrian Carter.

A name that none of them expected.

The woman who raised Lena.

Claire.

Everyone turned toward her.

But Claire was no longer there.

Her chair was empty.

The hospital door at the end of the hallway slowly opened.

And on the floor was a fresh note.

Sebastian picked it up.

May you like

Only five words were written.

She knows where I am.
