Chapter 7 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The elevator doors opened.
A man stepped out.
He whispered: "Clara Bennett."
My entire body froze.
Because I knew that voice.
Not from my memories.
Not from my life now.
But from somewhere buried deep inside me.
Somewhere I couldn't reach.
Adrian immediately moved in front of me.
His hand lowered toward his weapon.
Lily stepped back.
And Daniel...
Daniel looked like he had just seen the impossible.
The man standing in the elevator was older than the photograph.
His hair was darker with gray.
His face had changed.
But his eyes were exactly the same.
The same eyes staring back at me from the picture.
The same eyes I had spent the last three years forgetting.
Marcus Hale.
The man everyone said was dead.
The man whose disappearance started everything.
The man whose secrets had turned my life upside down.
He stepped out of the elevator calmly.
Like he wasn't walking into a room filled with people who believed he was a ghost.
Adrian stared at him.
"No."
Marcus looked at him.
"That's usually the first thing people say when they see me."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"You died."
Marcus gave a small smile.
"That's what I wanted everyone to believe."
I couldn't move.
I couldn't understand.
Every answer created more questions.
"You were alive?"
My voice came out quietly.
Marcus looked at me.
And his expression changed.
Not like he was looking at an enemy.
Like he was looking at someone he had lost.
"Clara."
The way he said my name hurt.
Because it sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
I took a step back.
"Don't."
His expression softened.
"You don't remember me."
I shook my head.
"No."
A painful silence followed.
Then Marcus looked at Lily.
"You found her."
Lily nodded.
"I did."
Marcus looked at Daniel.
And something changed.
"You failed to keep her away from this."
Daniel immediately reacted.
"I kept her alive."
Marcus looked at him.
"By making her forget everything?"
Daniel looked away.
That answer was enough.
I turned toward Daniel.
"You knew he was alive."
Daniel didn't speak.
My heart sank.
Another secret.
Another lie.
How many times had I woken up beside someone who knew more about me than I did?
How many people had been protecting a version of me that didn't exist anymore?
Adrian stepped closer to Marcus.
"You have five seconds to explain why you are alive."
Marcus looked at him.
"Still giving orders."
"Four."
Marcus ignored the threat.
"Three years ago, I discovered a network that connected some of the most powerful people in the city."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"The same network that wanted you dead."
Marcus nodded.
"The same network that wanted Clara erased."
I looked at him.
"Why me?"
Marcus looked at Lily.
Then at Evelyn.
Then finally at me.
"Because you found the evidence."
I shook my head.
"I was a waitress."
"No."
Marcus stepped closer.
"You worked undercover."
The words hit me.
Undercover.
A memory flashed.
A different apartment.
A different name.
A different life.
I saw myself sitting at a desk.
Reading documents.
Taking pictures.
Recording conversations.
Then a man walked in.
I knew his face.
But I couldn't remember his name.
I grabbed my head.
Marcus noticed.
"Clara."
I looked at him.
"I saw something."
Everyone became silent.
"I was working."
Marcus nodded.
"You were."
"What was my real name?"
Nobody answered.
That scared me.
Because there was a name.
I knew there was.
Something before Clara Bennett.
Marcus reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small black folder.
"I kept this because I promised myself I would return it to you when you were ready."
Adrian immediately stopped him.
"What is that?"
Marcus looked at him.
"The truth."
He handed it to me.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a passport.
Not Clara Bennett.
Another name.
I stared at it.
My breathing stopped.
Because the woman in the photograph wasn't Clara Bennett.
The woman in the passport wasn't Clara Bennett.
The woman was someone else.
Someone I had been before.
I looked at Marcus.
"Why did I change my name?"
He answered quietly:
"Because your real identity was the reason they tried to kill you."
I looked down again.
The passport photo showed me.
But different.
Confident.
Cold.
A person I didn't recognize.
The name underneath made my hands tremble.
"Elena Vale."
The room went silent.
Adrian reacted instantly.
"What did you say?"
I looked at him.
"You know that name?"
Adrian didn't answer.
That scared me.
Because Adrian Voss was rarely surprised.
Marcus looked at him.
"You knew there was a connection."
Adrian's eyes stayed on the passport.
"Not this."
I looked between them.
"What does Elena Vale mean?"
Nobody spoke.
Then Evelyn whispered:
"Your old life."
I closed the passport.
"No."
Marcus looked at me.
"You were Elena Vale before you became Clara Bennett."
The name felt strange.
But somehow...
It felt like mine.
A memory suddenly came back.
A woman holding my hand.
A woman's voice saying:
"Elena, if they find you, run."
I looked up.
"My mother."
Everyone froze.
Marcus stared at me.
"What did you say?"
I swallowed.
"I remember my mother."
Marcus stepped closer.
"What did she say?"
I closed my eyes.
The memory returned.
A room.
A locked door.
A crying woman.
A hidden box.
"She told me..."
I struggled.
"She told me not to trust the person who saved me."
Adrian looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked away.
Marcus noticed.
"Daniel."
Daniel didn't answer.
Marcus's voice became colder.
"Who saved her?"
The room went silent.
Then Daniel finally spoke.
"I did."
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel continued:
"But not the way you think."
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel looked at me.
"The night Marcus disappeared, I found you."
My heart stopped.
"You were injured."
I shook my head.
"No."
"You didn't remember anything."
Daniel swallowed.
"And someone was trying to find you."
Marcus stepped closer.
"Who?"
Daniel looked toward the window.
"The same person who knew Marcus was alive."
A cold silence filled the room.
Adrian's phone suddenly rang.
He answered.
A few seconds later, his face changed.
"What happened?"
The voice on the other side spoke quickly.
Adrian listened.
Then he looked at me.
"Clara."
I felt my stomach drop.
"What?"
He turned the phone around.
A security image appeared.
A man standing outside the building.
Holding an old newspaper.
On the front page was a photo of Elena Vale.
My old identity.
And underneath it:
"THE MISSING WITNESS HAS RETURNED."
Adrian looked at Marcus.
"Someone released her name."
Marcus's expression became serious.
"Impossible."
"Why?"
Marcus stared at the screen.
"Because only one person had that file."
I looked at him.
"Who?"
Marcus didn't answer.
He slowly looked toward the apartment door.
Because the lock had just turned.
Someone was coming inside.
May you like
And then a voice from the hallway whispered the name nobody had said in three years.
"Elena..."
