Chapter 2 - The Man Who Walked Through My Door

The bathroom door opened slowly.

For a moment, I couldn't move.

My entire body froze.

I had spent the last twenty minutes believing that door was the only thing separating me from Daniel.

The only thing keeping me safe.

But now the lock was turning.

The person outside had a key.

And I didn't know if I was about to be rescued...

or if my worst nightmare had just found another way inside.

The door opened a few inches.

A man's hand appeared first.

Not Daniel's.

A black suit sleeve.

A silver watch.

A calm, steady movement.

Then I saw him.

Adrian Voss.

The man everyone in New York whispered about.

The man I had only seen from across a restaurant floor.

The man I never imagined would stand in front of me.

His eyes moved immediately to my injured arm.

Not my face.

Not my tears.

My injury.

And somehow, that made me cry harder.

Because after everything that happened, he was the first person who looked at what Daniel had done instead of asking what I had done wrong.

"Clara."

His voice was quieter than I expected.

Almost gentle.

"Can you stand?"

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

My body had been holding everything together for so long that the moment someone offered help, I almost collapsed.

"I..."

My voice broke.

"I don't think so."

Adrian stepped closer, but slowly.

Carefully.

Like he understood that even kindness could feel frightening after what I had experienced.

"That's okay."

He removed his jacket.

Then he placed it around my shoulders.

It was warm.

It smelled like expensive cologne and something I couldn't describe.

Security.

Protection.

Something I hadn't felt in a very long time.

Behind him, two men stood silently in the hallway.

They looked like they belonged beside him.

Professional.

Alert.

Dangerous.

But they didn't scare me.

Because the person I feared was standing somewhere else.

Daniel.

Adrian looked over my shoulder.

His expression changed.

Not dramatically.

Not with anger.

Something colder.

"What happened?"

I looked down.

I didn't want to say it.

Saying it would make it real.

But then I remembered Daniel laughing outside the door.

I remembered him telling me nobody would come.

So I whispered:

"My husband."

Adrian's eyes stayed on mine.

"Your husband did this?"

I nodded.

The hallway became silent.

Then Adrian turned away.

And for the first time, I saw something behind the calm expression.

Not rage.

Control.

The kind of control that made people afraid.

"Where is he?"

I didn't answer.

I didn't have to.

Because Daniel answered for me.

"I am right here."

My entire body tensed.

Daniel stood at the end of the hallway.

His face had changed.

Twenty minutes earlier, he had been confident.

Untouchable.

Like he owned the apartment.

Now he looked different.

Confused.

Because Adrian Voss was standing between him and the woman he thought nobody would protect.

Daniel laughed nervously.

"This isn't what it looks like."

Adrian looked at him.

No emotion.

No reaction.

That scared Daniel more than anger would have.

"Really?"

Adrian asked.

Daniel straightened his shirt.

"This is my wife. This is a private family matter."

A small silence followed.

Then Adrian looked at me.

"Did you call him?"

I shook my head.

"No."

Daniel immediately interrupted.

"She is emotional. She doesn't know what she's saying."

Adrian looked back at him.

"Interesting."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

"You spoke for her before she could."

The words were simple.

But Daniel's face changed.

Because Adrian wasn't arguing.

He was observing.

And somehow that was worse.

Daniel stepped forward.

"You don't know anything about us."

Adrian looked at the injured arm.

Then back at Daniel.

"I know enough."

Daniel smiled.

A fake smile.

The kind people use when they believe they can still control a situation.

"You think because you have money and power, you can walk into someone's home and play hero?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Daniel continued.

"She's dramatic. She's always been dramatic."

I felt something inside me break.

Because that was the story Daniel had created.

Not just for others.

For me.

I was too sensitive.

Too emotional.

Too difficult.

Every time he hurt me, he convinced me the problem was my reaction.

Adrian noticed my expression.

And then he said something I would never forget.

"Clara."

I looked at him.

"You don't have to explain what happened to make someone believe you."

My eyes filled with tears again.

But this time, they weren't from fear.

They were from hearing words I didn't know I needed.

Daniel looked annoyed.

"You don't get to talk to my wife like that."

Adrian slowly turned toward him.

"Your wife?"

The question was quiet.

Daniel hesitated.

"Yes."

Adrian looked at the wedding ring on my finger.

Then at the bruises.

"That ring doesn't give you ownership."

Nobody spoke.

For the first time that night, Daniel looked small.

Not powerless.

Not harmless.

But smaller.

Like someone had finally removed the mask.

A few minutes later, Adrian's men helped me stand.

My legs were weak.

Every step hurt.

But I walked out of that bathroom.

The room that had been my prison for the last hour.

I walked past Daniel.

I didn't look at him.

I couldn't.

Because if I did, I was afraid I would remember all the times I stayed.

All the times I believed his apologies.

All the times I convinced myself tomorrow would be different.

Adrian noticed.

He didn't say anything.

He simply walked beside me.

Not in front.

Not behind.

Beside me.

When we reached the living room, I saw something that made my stomach drop.

My phone was on the table.

Broken.

The screen shattered.

But underneath it was something else.

A small envelope.

I had never seen it before.

Adrian noticed my expression.

"Was that there before?"

I shook my head.

"No."

One of his men picked it up carefully.

"Boss."

Adrian took the envelope.

There was no name.

No address.

Only one sentence written across the front.

A sentence that made my blood turn cold.

"Ask Clara what happened three years ago."

I stared at the words.

Three years.

The exact amount of time I had been married to Daniel.

The exact amount of time since I left my old life behind.

Adrian looked at me.

"Clara."

My hands started shaking.

"What?"

He turned the envelope over.

There was a symbol pressed into the paper.

A symbol I recognized.

Because I had seen it before.

On a document Daniel told me never to touch.

"What is it?"

Adrian's voice became serious.

"Where did you see this?"

I couldn't answer immediately.

Because the memory came back.

A locked drawer.

Daniel's hidden papers.

A name I wasn't supposed to know.

Adrian looked at my face.

And he realized I was remembering something.

"Clara."

His voice lowered.

"Who gave you this?"

I whispered:

"I don't know."

Then my eyes moved toward the hallway.

Toward the bedroom.

Because suddenly I remembered something.

Something Daniel had said months ago.

A warning.

A threat disguised as a joke.

"If anyone from my past ever finds you, pretend you don't know me."

Adrian noticed where I was looking.

"What's in that room?"

I swallowed.

"I don't know."

But I did.

Some part of me knew.

And that scared me.

Adrian walked toward the bedroom.

His men followed.

Daniel suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

"Don't open that door."

Everyone stopped.

Adrian turned slowly.

"Why?"

Daniel said nothing.

His face had lost all confidence.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Not of Adrian.

Of what was behind that door.

Adrian reached for the handle.

May you like

The bedroom door was already unlocked.

Someone was waiting inside.
