Chapter 3 - The Secret Behind The Locked Room

The bedroom door opened three inches.
A woman's voice whispered from inside: "Clara... don't trust him."
Adrian Voss stopped moving.
He had heard hundreds of people beg for their lives.
He had heard threats.
Lies.
Confessions.
But he had never heard someone say my name from a room that was supposed to be empty.
Daniel's face changed instantly.
The confidence disappeared.
The anger disappeared.
For the first time since Adrian arrived, Daniel looked terrified.
Not scared of what would happen to him.
Scared of what I was about to discover.
Adrian slowly pushed the door open.
The bedroom was dark.
The curtains were closed.
The only light came from the hallway behind us.
I stood frozen near the living room, unable to understand what I had just heard.
Someone was inside.
Someone who knew my name.
Someone who knew enough to warn me.
Adrian raised one hand.
His men immediately stopped.
He didn't rush in.
He didn't make a scene.
He simply watched.
Waiting.
Listening.
Then he looked back at Daniel.
"Who is in that room?"
Daniel didn't answer.
That silence told Adrian everything.
A person who had nothing to hide would have explained.
A person who was innocent would have been confused.
Daniel was neither.
He was calculating.
"I don't know what game you're playing," Daniel finally said.
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"You expect me to believe someone entered your apartment, locked themselves in your bedroom, and you have no idea?"
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I felt a cold feeling in my stomach.
Because I suddenly realized something.
Daniel had never looked surprised that someone was inside.
He had looked afraid.
Like he already knew.
Adrian stepped into the room.
I followed before I could stop myself.
I didn't know why.
Maybe because I was tired of being afraid.
Maybe because I needed answers more than I needed comfort.
The bedroom looked normal.
Too normal.
The bed was perfectly made.
The closet doors were closed.
The expensive furniture looked untouched.
But then Adrian stopped beside the nightstand.
There was a photograph lying face down.
He picked it up.
My heart stopped.
Because it was a picture of me.
But not the me from our wedding.
Not the me from our anniversary.
It was a picture taken years before I met Daniel.
I was standing outside a restaurant.
Smiling.
Happy.
Before everything changed.
I grabbed the photo.
"Where did he get this?"
Nobody answered.
Adrian looked at Daniel.
"How long have you been watching her?"
Daniel immediately shook his head.
"That's not what it is."
Adrian didn't blink.
"Then explain."
Daniel looked at me.
Not Adrian.
Me.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Desperation.
"Clara, you need to understand."
I stepped back.
"Understand what?"
He walked closer.
Adrian moved between us instantly.
Daniel stopped.
Good.
Because for the first time, he understood that he couldn't control the room anymore.
"You lied to me," I whispered.
Daniel's expression softened.
A trick.
The same trick he always used.
"Clara, please."
I almost laughed.
Because I had heard that voice before.
The apology voice.
The voice that came after the damage.
The voice that made me question myself.
But this time was different.
Because someone else was standing there.
Someone who wasn't afraid of him.
Adrian opened the nightstand drawer.
Inside was a small black notebook.
He picked it up.
Daniel's face turned pale.
"No."
It was the first honest reaction he had shown all night.
Adrian looked at him.
"Interesting."
He opened the notebook.
The pages were filled with dates.
Names.
Locations.
My name appeared again and again.
My hands started shaking.
"What is that?"
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
He kept reading.
Then his expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
Because Adrian Voss was a man who controlled every emotion on his face.
And whatever he saw disturbed him.
"What?"
I stepped closer.
"Tell me."
He closed the notebook.
"Not here."
I stared at him.
"No."
My voice surprised even me.
"I spent three years not knowing what was happening in my own life."
I looked at Daniel.
"I spent three years thinking I was the problem."
Then I looked back at Adrian.
"I want to know."
The room became silent.
Adrian studied me.
Maybe he expected fear.
Maybe he expected me to break.
But I was already broken.
There was nothing left to lose.
Finally, he handed me the notebook.
I opened it.
The first page had one sentence.
Written in Daniel's handwriting.
"Operation Clara Bennett."
I stopped breathing.
Operation.
Not relationship.
Not marriage.
Operation.
The word felt impossible.
I turned the page.
The entries were short.
Dates.
Observations.
Information about my routine.
Where I worked.
Who I talked to.
When I left the apartment.
Everything.
Daniel had been tracking me.
But why?
I looked up.
"Why would you do this?"
Daniel looked away.
That hurt more than if he had denied it.
"Daniel."
My voice cracked.
"Why?"
He finally spoke.
"You don't remember everything."
A chill went through me.
"What does that mean?"
He stepped forward.
"I tried to protect you."
Adrian immediately interrupted.
"Don't."
Daniel looked at him.
"You don't know the truth."
Adrian's voice was cold.
"Then explain."
Daniel didn't.
Instead, he looked at me.
"Before we met, you were involved in something you don't remember."
I shook my head.
"No."
"You were."
"No."
My voice became louder.
"I worked at a restaurant."
Daniel stared at me.
"That wasn't the only thing you did."
I felt dizzy.
Because a strange memory appeared.
A room.
A conversation.
A man shouting.
A name.
But it disappeared before I could catch it.
Adrian noticed.
"You remembered something."
I looked at him.
"I don't know."
He moved closer.
"What did you see?"
I closed my eyes.
"Someone saying my name."
"Who?"
I opened my eyes.
"I don't know."
Then Adrian's phone rang.
Everyone looked at him.
He answered.
A few seconds later, his expression changed.
"What?"
Silence.
Then:
"Are you sure?"
He listened.
I watched his face.
The calm disappeared.
Only for a moment.
But it happened.
He ended the call.
"What is it?"
I asked.
Adrian looked at the notebook.
Then at me.
"Someone accessed your old records tonight."
My stomach dropped.
"What records?"
He didn't answer.
Daniel did.
And his voice was barely a whisper.
"Her real identity."
I stared at him.
"What did you say?"
Daniel looked like he wished he could take the words back.
Adrian stepped toward him.
"Explain."
Daniel shook his head.
"I can't."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"You can."
Daniel looked at me.
"I'm sorry, Clara."
Those words terrified me.
Because Daniel never apologized unless he was afraid.
Then the lights in the apartment suddenly went out.
Everything became black.
A second later, Adrian's men reached for their weapons.
I heard movement.
Someone was inside the apartment.
Not one of Adrian's men.
Not Daniel.
Someone else.
A phone screen lit up across the room.
A message appeared.
My blood ran cold.
Because it was sent from my own number.
The message only had four words:
"Remember who you were."
Then another message arrived.
A photo appeared.
A photo of me.
Standing beside a man I had never seen before.
And underneath it was a name.
A name that made Adrian Voss go completely silent.
"Clara..."
May you like
Adrian looked at me.
"The man in this photo is the reason you were supposed to disappear."
