Chapter 5 - The Name I Was Forced To Forget

The woman stood in the doorway.

She whispered: "Clara Bennett was never your real name."

I stopped breathing.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Not Adrian.

Not Daniel.

Not even the woman standing in the darkness.

Because those words didn't just reveal a secret.

They destroyed the only identity I had ever known.

My name.

My life.

My memories.

Everything I believed belonged to me suddenly felt like it had been borrowed from someone else.

I stared at her.

She looked familiar.

Not in the way a stranger looked familiar.

In the way a forgotten dream returned after years of silence.

Her face triggered something inside me.

A feeling.

A warning.

A memory I couldn't reach.

"Who are you?"

My voice barely came out.

The woman stepped into the light.

She was in her early fifties.

Dark hair with strands of gray.

A tired face.

The kind of face that had carried too many secrets for too long.

She looked at me with sadness.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Sadness.

"My name is Evelyn Carter."

She looked at Adrian.

"And I was the person who helped hide her."

Daniel immediately moved.

"You shouldn't be here."

Evelyn looked at him.

And for the first time, I saw Daniel afraid of someone other than Adrian.

"You still think you can control this?"

Daniel said nothing.

Adrian stepped between us.

"Start explaining."

Evelyn looked at him.

"You already know enough to understand how dangerous this is."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Try me."

She looked back at me.

Then she said:

"Three years ago, Clara Bennett disappeared."

I shook my head.

"I didn't disappear."

Evelyn's eyes filled with sadness.

"You did."

"No."

"You just don't remember."

The room felt smaller.

I looked at Daniel.

"Did you know about this?"

Daniel didn't answer.

That was enough.

My chest tightened.

"You knew."

His silence hurt more than any confession.

"You knew I didn't remember."

Daniel finally spoke.

"Yes."

My eyes burned.

"And you still married me?"

His face changed.

"I didn't marry you to hurt you."

"Then why?"

Daniel looked down.

"Because I was trying to keep you alive."

I laughed.

But there was no humor in it.

"By controlling me?"

"No."

"By tracking me?"

His silence answered.

I turned away.

I couldn't look at him.

Because the worst part wasn't that he lied.

The worst part was that a small piece of me believed him.

That maybe there was something I didn't know.

Something everyone was protecting me from.

Adrian walked toward Evelyn.

"What happened three years ago?"

Evelyn looked at him.

"Marcus Hale."

The name changed the entire room.

Adrian became completely still.

"Tell me everything."

Evelyn took a deep breath.

"Marcus built an empire by collecting secrets."

She looked at me.

"Financial records. Criminal connections. Names of powerful people."

I swallowed.

"And me?"

Evelyn hesitated.

"You found something."

I shook my head.

"I was a waitress."

"No."

Her answer came immediately.

"You were never just a waitress."

I closed my eyes.

Another memory appeared.

A room.

A computer screen.

A voice.

My own voice.

"We need to make sure nobody finds this."

I opened my eyes.

"What did I find?"

Nobody answered.

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

"What was she protecting?"

Evelyn looked toward the window.

"The truth."

That answer made me angry.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

I stepped forward.

"Truth about what?"

Evelyn looked at me.

"About Marcus Hale's final operation."

The room became silent.

"Operation Seventeen."

My heart stopped.

The number.

The envelope.

The symbol.

Adrian noticed my reaction.

"You remember something."

I shook my head.

"I don't know."

But I did.

Something was moving beneath the surface.

Something buried.

Something I had spent three years forgetting.

Evelyn walked toward the table.

She placed a small object down.

A necklace.

My necklace.

I had never seen it before.

But the moment I saw it, my hand moved toward my chest.

Because I knew it.

I knew it before touching it.

"Where did you get that?"

Evelyn whispered:

"You gave it to me."

I stared at her.

"When?"

"Three years ago."

My fingers touched the necklace.

A sudden pain shot through my head.

Then images appeared.

A car.

Rain.

A woman crying.

A man yelling.

Marcus.

I saw Marcus.

Alive.

Standing in front of me.

He was holding a folder.

He said something.

Something important.

But I couldn't hear it.

Then another image appeared.

Daniel.

Standing beside him.

I opened my eyes immediately.

I looked at Daniel.

He saw my expression.

And he knew.

"You remember."

I stepped back.

"You were there."

Daniel's face went pale.

"Clara..."

"You were there with him."

Adrian looked at Daniel.

The silence became dangerous.

"Explain."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I wasn't working for Marcus."

"Then why were you there?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Because Marcus asked me to protect you."

I felt betrayed.

"Everyone keeps saying they protected me."

My voice shook.

"But nobody asked what I wanted."

Nobody spoke.

Because it was true.

My entire life had become a decision made by other people.

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

"What happened after Marcus disappeared?"

Evelyn's expression changed.

"He didn't disappear."

I froze.

"What?"

She looked at me.

"He was killed."

The room went silent.

"But everyone thought..."

"Everyone was supposed to think he was gone."

"Why?"

Evelyn looked at me.

"Because the person who ordered his death was looking for the one thing Marcus left behind."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"What thing?"

Evelyn looked at me.

"Her."

My heart stopped.

"Me?"

She nodded.

"Marcus didn't hide information."

She pointed at the necklace.

"He hid it inside the only person he trusted."

I stared at the necklace.

"No."

Evelyn's voice became softer.

"Clara, you were carrying the evidence."

I felt dizzy.

"What evidence?"

"The evidence that could destroy some of the most powerful people in New York."

I looked at Adrian.

For the first time, I understood something.

He wasn't helping me because I called him.

He was helping me because he knew what was at stake.

"You knew."

Adrian didn't deny it.

"I suspected."

"Since when?"

He was quiet.

Then:

"Since I saw the photograph."

I stared at him.

"The photograph of me and Marcus?"

He nodded.

"You were the last person seen with him."

My stomach dropped.

"And you never told me?"

"I didn't know if you were hiding the truth..."

He paused.

"Or if someone made you forget it."

The words hit me harder than anything else.

Because suddenly I understood.

My missing memories weren't an accident.

Someone had taken them.

Someone had changed my life.

The question was who.

A loud sound came from downstairs.

Everyone turned.

One of Adrian's men answered his phone.

His face changed.

"Boss."

Adrian looked over.

"What?"

The man hesitated.

Then:

"Someone just entered the building."

Adrian's expression changed.

"Who?"

The man looked at me.

Then at the security camera footage on his phone.

"She says her name is Clara Bennett."

My blood ran cold.

Adrian took the phone.

On the screen was a woman standing in the lobby.

A woman who looked exactly like me.

Same face.

Same eyes.

Same scar on her hand.

Adrian slowly looked up.

And whispered:

May you like

"That's impossible."

Because the woman in the video was wearing the necklace I was holding.
