Chapter 9 - The Old Estate Where The Truth Was Buried

The old Duca estate had been abandoned for seventeen years.
Nobody went there.
Nobody mentioned it.
Nobody even spoke its name.
Because every powerful family had a place where they buried their mistakes.
For the Duca family…
That place was Blackwood Manor.
Located nearly two hours north of Westchester, surrounded by endless forest and forgotten roads, Blackwood Manor was once the original home of the Duca family.
Before the companies.
Before the empire.
Before Alessandro became the man everyone feared.
It was where his grandfather built the foundation.
It was where his father made his first deals.
And according to Marco…
It was where every secret began.
The convoy moved through the darkness.
Three black SUVs.
No lights except the headlights cutting through the empty road.
Alessandro sat in the first vehicle.
His hands were tightly clenched.
Not from fear.
From anger.
Emma was somewhere inside that old house.
A three-year-old child who had already experienced more fear than most adults faced in a lifetime.
And the person responsible was someone who had been trusted by his family for decades.
Victor Hale.
The man who attended birthdays.
The man who sat at their dinner table.
The man who called Alessandro “family.”
The man who had been hiding behind the Duca name while destroying it from within.
Across from Alessandro sat Marco.
His older brother looked different now.
The years had changed him.
The confident smile.
The easy humor.
The warmth.
All of it was buried beneath twenty years of survival.
But Alessandro still saw the brother who used to protect him.
“You blame me.”
Marco spoke quietly.
Alessandro looked at him.
“For what?”
“For disappearing.”
The answer was honest.
And that made it harder.
Alessandro looked out the window.
“I spent twenty years believing I lost my brother.”
Marco nodded.
“I know.”
“I hated myself for surviving.”
Marco looked down.
“Alessandro…”
“No.”
His voice remained controlled.
“But you need to understand.”
A pause.
“I needed you.”
Those words hurt more than anger.
Because Marco had always been the person Alessandro believed would never leave.
Marco closed his eyes.
“I know.”
Silence.
Then:
“I was trying to save you.”
Alessandro looked at him.
“By abandoning me?”
Marco accepted the accusation.
“Yes.”
The vehicles stopped near midnight.
Blackwood Manor appeared through the trees.
Even abandoned, it was intimidating.
A massive stone structure.
Broken windows.
Overgrown gardens.
A place that looked like it had been waiting.
Waiting for someone to return.
Alessandro stepped out.
The cold air hit his face.
Marco stood beside him.
“This is where Father kept everything.”
“What everything?”
“Records.”
“Of what?”
Marco looked toward the house.
“Every person he destroyed.”
Alessandro stared.
“And Lucas?”
Marco nodded.
“He was here.”
A painful silence.
“My father kept his own son hidden?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Marco looked at him.
“Because Lucas knew too much.”
Inside Blackwood Manor, time seemed frozen.
Dust covered the furniture.
Old paintings watched from the walls.
The same Duca ancestors who had built their empire stared down at Alessandro.
He wondered how many secrets those portraits had witnessed.
How many lives had been sacrificed for power?
Jonah moved ahead with security.
“Clear.”
Another room.
“Clear.”
Then they reached the basement.
The door was locked.
Marco stopped.
“This is it.”
Alessandro looked at the old metal door.
“How do you know?”
“Because I tried to open it twenty years ago.”
“And?”
Marco looked at him.
“Father stopped me.”
A pause.
“He told me if I opened that door, I would destroy the family.”
Alessandro placed his hand on the lock.
“Maybe he was right.”
The door opened.
Inside was a hidden archive.
Files.
Photographs.
Old recordings.
Boxes filled with documents.
The history of the Duca family.
Not the public version.
The real one.
Jonah picked up a folder.
“Alessandro.”
He opened it.
His face changed.
“What?”
Jonah handed it over.
Inside were adoption papers.
Medical records.
DNA results.
And one name.
Lucas Duca.
But beneath it…
Another name.
Emma Carter.
Alessandro stared.
“She’s related to him.”
Marco nodded.
“Yes.”
“But how?”
Before Marco could answer…
A voice came from the darkness.
“Because Lucas was never allowed to have a life.”
Everyone turned.
A man stepped forward.
Victor Hale.
Older.
Gray hair.
Calm.
Almost peaceful.
Like he was not standing in front of armed men.
Like he had expected this moment.
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.
“Where is Emma?”
Victor smiled slightly.
“Still protecting what matters to you, I see.”
“Where is she?”
Victor looked around the room.
“This family always believed power was everything.”
He shook his head.
“You were wrong.”
Alessandro stepped forward.
“Where is the child?”
Victor looked at Marco.
“Your brother always had a weakness.”
Marco’s expression hardened.
“Leave him out of this.”
Victor laughed softly.
“You still think you’re the hero?”
Silence.
Victor walked closer.
“Marco, you weren’t saving the family.”
“You were exposing it.”
“You destroyed everything your father built.”
Marco stared.
“Your father destroyed himself.”
Victor smiled.
“Maybe.”
A pause.
“But he understood one thing.”
“What?”
Victor looked at Alessandro.
“People forgive monsters if the monsters protect them.”
Alessandro’s eyes became colder.
“You kidnapped a child.”
“I protected her.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
Victor sighed.
“Emma was never the target.”
“Then what?”
Victor looked toward the files.
“The truth.”
A sound came from upstairs.
A small voice.
“Mommy?”
Alessandro froze.
Emma.
He moved instantly.
But Victor spoke.
“Wait.”
Alessandro turned.
Victor’s expression changed.
For the first time…
There was sadness.
“She deserves to know.”
“Know what?”
Victor looked at him.
“The truth about her father.”
Alessandro’s jaw tightened.
“Lucas.”
Victor nodded.
“Lucas was not a victim.”
The room went silent.
“He was the person who started this.”
Marco looked confused.
“What are you talking about?”
Victor opened another file.
Inside was a photograph.
A young man.
Lucas.
Standing beside Elena.
And beside him…
Alessandro.
But the picture was impossible.
Because Alessandro was only twelve years old.
Victor placed the photograph down.
“Lucas wasn’t just your father’s secret son.”
A pause.
“He was your brother.”
Alessandro looked at Marco.
Marco looked equally shocked.
Victor continued.
“Your father had three sons.”
Marco whispered:
“Three…”
Victor nodded.
“Marco.”
A pause.
“Alessandro.”
Another pause.
“And Lucas.”
The entire room became silent.
Because the Duca family secret was not one child.
It was three.
And everyone had spent twenty years trying to hide the third son.
Suddenly, the lights went out.
A gunshot echoed.
Everyone moved.
Alessandro reached for his weapon.
When emergency lights returned…
Victor was gone.
And on the floor…
Was Emma’s teddy bear.
With a note attached.
Alessandro picked it up.
Five words.
Five words that made his blood run cold.
COME ALONE, OR LOSE HER.
Marco looked at him.
“No.”
Alessandro stared at the note.
“She’s my responsibility.”
“You don’t go alone.”
“She’s a child.”
Marco stepped forward.
“And you’re my brother.”
For the first time in twenty years…
The brothers stood together.
Not as rivals.
Not as heirs.
As family.
Alessandro looked toward the darkness.
Toward wherever Victor had taken Emma.
May you like
And whispered:
“I’m coming.”
