Chapter 5 - The Brother Who Was Never Buried

The letter shook slightly in Alessandro’s hand.

Not because he was afraid.

Because for the first time in his life…

He did not know what to believe.

His father had spent decades teaching him one thing.

The Duca family survived because they controlled the truth.

Every scandal.

Every weakness.

Every mistake.

Everything was buried before the world could see it.

But now, standing inside a hidden room beneath his own mansion, Alessandro realized something terrifying.

The person who had controlled the truth for decades…

Had been lying to him.

His own father.

He looked down at the letter again.

My son Alessandro,

If you are reading this, then I have failed to protect you from the truth.

Protect.

That word bothered him.

Because people always used that word when they wanted to justify secrets.

They said they were protecting you.

But sometimes…

They were only protecting themselves.

Alessandro continued reading.

Marco discovered what happened twenty years ago. He found the documents I spent years hiding. He believed the truth needed to be exposed.

A memory came back.

A younger Marco.

His older brother.

The only person in the Duca family who had ever treated Alessandro like a human being instead of an heir.

Marco was different from their father.

Their father believed emotions were weaknesses.

Marco believed emotions were what separated monsters from men.

When Alessandro was fifteen, after a brutal argument with their father, Marco had found him sitting alone outside the estate.

“You know what the problem with this family is?” Marco had asked.

Young Alessandro looked at him.

“What?”

“We think being strong means feeling nothing.”

Alessandro remembered laughing.

Because at fifteen, he thought his brother was being naive.

Now…

Twenty years later…

Those words felt like a warning.

The letter continued.

Marco discovered Elena Carter.

Alessandro stopped.

Elena.

The name that kept appearing.

The woman from the video.

The woman connected to Sophia.

The woman who claimed his father had abandoned her.

He learned that I had a daughter outside my marriage.

Alessandro stared.

A daughter.

His father had a daughter.

His entire life, he believed there were only two Duca sons.

Marco.

And Alessandro.

But there had been another child.

Another secret.

Another life hidden away.

The letter continued.

Elena was not supposed to become part of the Duca world. I promised her protection. I promised her child would never be used against the family.

Alessandro’s jaw tightened.

Child.

Not daughter.

Child.

The same word Elena used in the video.

My son deserves to know who his real family is.

A cold feeling moved through Alessandro.

He looked at the old photograph again.

The baby.

The woman.

His father.

Then another thought appeared.

One he did not want to accept.

Sophia had a sister named Elena.

Elena had a son.

And his father was connected.

But how?

The hidden room door opened.

Jonah entered.

He immediately noticed Alessandro’s expression.

“What happened?”

Alessandro handed him the letter.

Jonah read silently.

His face changed.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“You had no idea?”

“No.”

Jonah looked at the photograph.

“Alessandro…”

“Find Elena Carter.”

Jonah hesitated.

“We already searched public records.”

“And?”

“Nothing.”

“Nothing?”

“No record after twenty years ago.”

Alessandro looked at him.

“That means someone erased her.”

Jonah nodded.

“And whoever erased her knew exactly what they were doing.”

Alessandro closed the wooden box.

“Find her son.”

Jonah looked confused.

“You think he’s alive?”

Alessandro looked toward the ceiling.

Toward the mansion above them.

Toward the place where a little girl was sleeping.

“I think everyone who wanted this secret buried believed he was.”

The next morning, Sophia Carter disappeared from the hospital.

Not officially.

Not by walking out.

By someone moving her.

Alessandro received the call at 7:12 a.m.

The hospital security manager sounded nervous.

“Mr. Duca, there’s a problem.”

Alessandro stood immediately.

“What happened?”

“Mrs. Carter’s room was found empty.”

His expression changed.

“Explain.”

“She was moved during the night.”

“By who?”

“We’re checking the cameras.”

“And?”

Silence.

Then:

“The cameras were disabled.”

Again.

The same method.

The same pattern.

Someone always removed the eyes.

Alessandro’s voice became colder.

“Where is her daughter?”

The man hesitated.

“She was not at the hospital.”

A dangerous silence followed.

“Not at the hospital?”

“No.”

For one moment, Alessandro felt something he hated.

Panic.

Not for himself.

For Emma.

“Call Jonah.”

The search lasted twenty minutes.

The longest twenty minutes of Alessandro’s life.

Because power was useless when the person you cared about disappeared.

Money.

Security.

Influence.

None of it mattered.

A child could still vanish.

Finally, Jonah found something.

A vehicle.

Leaving the hospital parking area.

The driver?

One of Sophia’s old contacts.

A man named Daniel Cross.

Former Duca security employee.

Someone who disappeared fifteen years ago.

Alessandro stared at the image.

“Who is he?”

Jonah looked at the file.

“Someone your father trusted.”

That answer was becoming too common.

Everyone connected to this mystery was connected to his father.

Everyone.

The vehicle was found two hours later near an abandoned farmhouse outside the city.

Alessandro arrived before police.

He entered with Jonah and two guards.

The house was empty.

Almost.

On the kitchen table sat Emma’s teddy bear.

Alessandro stopped.

His heart dropped.

He picked it up.

There was a small piece of paper attached.

Only five words.

Stop searching for the past.

Jonah looked around.

“They’re watching us.”

Alessandro knew.

He had known from the beginning.

This was not random.

This was a warning.

But whoever was behind this had made one mistake.

They threatened his family.

And Alessandro Duca had always been most dangerous when someone threatened what belonged under his protection.

Then a sound came from upstairs.

A small voice.

“Mr. Duca?”

Alessandro froze.

He ran.

Up the stairs.

Into the bedroom.

Emma was there.

Sitting in the corner.

Holding her teddy bear.

Crying.

But alive.

Alessandro immediately picked her up.

“Emma.”

She wrapped her arms around him.

“I was scared.”

“I know.”

“Mommy told me never to trust bad people.”

Alessandro looked around the room.

“Who brought you here?”

Emma wiped her tears.

“A lady.”

“What lady?”

She thought.

“She had pretty hair.”

Alessandro’s expression changed.

“Blonde?”

Emma nodded.

“She said she knew Mommy.”

Jonah looked at him.

Both men understood.

Vivian.

But before Alessandro could speak…

Emma whispered something else.

Something that changed everything.

“She told me…”

A pause.

“She told me my mommy was lying.”

Alessandro looked down.

“About what?”

Emma’s little voice became smaller.

“She said…”

“She said you weren’t my mommy’s enemy.”

A pause.

“She said you were my family.”

The room went silent.

Family.

A word Alessandro had spent years trying to understand.

Emma looked at him.

“Is that true?”

Alessandro had no answer.

Because deep down…

He already knew.

The secrets.

The photograph.

The hidden drive.

The missing woman.

The dead brother.

Everything pointed toward one impossible truth.

Emma Carter was not just the daughter of a maid.

She was connected to the Duca bloodline.

And someone had spent twenty years making sure Alessandro never found out.

That night, Alessandro returned to the mansion with Emma safely beside him.

But something had changed.

He no longer saw her as a child caught in someone else’s war.

He saw her as someone who had been born into it.

Like him.

Like Marco.

Like everyone carrying the Duca name.

Before sleeping, Emma looked up at him.

“Mr. Duca?”

“Yes?”

“If Mommy wakes up…”

A pause.

“Will you tell her I was brave?”

Alessandro looked at her.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

A tiny smile appeared.

“Thank you.”

After she fell asleep, Alessandro walked into his office.

The hidden drive was still open.

The folder named Elena remained on the screen.

But now there was one more file.

One that had not been there before.

A file created minutes ago.

Someone had remotely accessed the drive.

The title was:

THE TRUTH ABOUT EMMA CARTER

Alessandro clicked.

The first image appeared.

A hospital record.

Twenty years old.

A birth certificate.

A name.

And underneath…

The father’s name.

Alessandro stopped breathing.

Because the name written there was not his father’s.

Not Marco’s.

Not anyone he expected.

May you like

It was his own.

Alessandro Duca.
