Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Knew The Duca Family’s Darkest Secret

The black drive sat on Alessandro’s desk for almost ten minutes.
He did not touch it.
Not because he was afraid of what was inside.
Alessandro Duca had never been afraid of information.
Information was power.
And power was survival.
But this was different.
Because for the first time in his life, the information waiting inside that small piece of technology was connected to his own blood.
His family.
His father.
His name.
The name that had built everything.
The name that had destroyed everything.
Across the room, Emma slept on the large leather sofa.
The mansion’s guest room had been prepared for her, but she refused to leave Alessandro’s sight.
Every time someone tried to carry her away, she woke up crying.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just enough to reveal that she was terrified of being alone again.
So Alessandro allowed her to stay.
Something he never would have done before.
A child sleeping inside his private office.
A child who was not related to him.
A child whose mother worked as a maid.
His former self would have considered it impossible.
But his former self had never seen a three-year-old girl standing barefoot in the middle of the night asking him to save her mother.
Jonah stood beside the desk.
“You want me to open it?”
Alessandro looked at the drive.
“No.”
Jonah frowned.
“You found it hidden inside Sophia’s room.”
“I know.”
“And you think someone was trying to hide it.”
“I know.”
“Then why wait?”
Alessandro looked toward Emma.
“Because whoever hid it knew Sophia had it.”
Jonah understood.
“And if they know we found it…”
“They’ll know we’re looking.”
The room became quiet.
For years, Alessandro had survived because he understood one rule.
Never reveal what you know.
Never show your next move.
Never allow your enemy to see the board before you are ready.
He picked up the drive.
“Create a copy.”
Jonah nodded.
“One for us.”
“Yes.”
“And one hidden.”
Alessandro looked at him.
“In case someone tries to erase the truth.”
The next morning, the Duca mansion looked different.
The sun was shining.
The rain had disappeared.
The gardens outside were beautiful.
Perfect.
Almost too perfect.
That was the problem with beautiful things.
They often hid ugly truths underneath.
Alessandro stood in the dining room when Vivian entered.
She was dressed elegantly again.
A white blouse.
A designer skirt.
Perfect hair.
The woman from yesterday’s engagement photos had returned.
But Alessandro saw something nobody else did.
The nervousness behind her eyes.
“Good morning.”
He did not answer.
Vivian stopped.
“You’re still angry.”
“No.”
Her eyebrows lifted.
“No?”
“No.”
Alessandro poured coffee.
“I’m investigating.”
That answer was worse.
Anger was emotional.
Investigation was dangerous.
Vivian sat across from him.
“Alessandro, whatever you think happened…”
“I don’t think.”
He looked at her.
“I confirm.”
She forced a small smile.
“You’re treating me like a suspect.”
“You disabled a security camera.”
“I told you. I don’t know why it happened.”
“You had access.”
“So did you.”
The same argument.
The same defense.
But something was missing.
Fear.
Vivian was not afraid of being accused.
She was afraid of something else.
Alessandro noticed.
“You know Sophia.”
The color disappeared slightly from her face.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“No.”
“Don’t lie.”
Her fingers tightened around the coffee cup.
“I met her because she works here.”
“Only that?”
“Yes.”
Alessandro watched her.
People lied differently.
Some talked too much.
Some became defensive.
Some became angry.
Vivian became still.
That was her tell.
“You’re hiding something.”
Her eyes moved toward him.
“You don’t know me as well as you think.”
The sentence surprised him.
Not because of the words.
Because of the tone.
It sounded almost like a warning.
At noon, Alessandro visited St. Vincent’s Hospital.
Sophia was awake.
Barely.
But awake.
Emma ran into her mother’s arms the moment she saw her.
The reunion lasted less than a minute.
Because Sophia began crying.
Not from pain.
From guilt.
“I’m sorry.”
Emma shook her head.
“Mommy, don’t cry.”
Sophia kissed her daughter’s hair.
“I should have protected you.”
Alessandro stood near the window.
Watching.
There was something about the scene that bothered him.
Not because it was emotional.
Because it was familiar.
He had seen that kind of love before.
His own mother.
Before she died.
Before his father became colder.
Before the Duca family became what it was.
Sophia looked at him.
“Mr. Duca.”
He stepped closer.
“Alessandro.”
She looked surprised.
“Everyone calls me that.”
Sophia nodded slowly.
“Thank you.”
“You don’t need to thank me.”
“I do.”
Her eyes moved toward Emma.
“She would not have survived that house without you.”
Alessandro’s expression tightened.
“What does that mean?”
Sophia looked away.
Too late.
He noticed.
“You know something.”
“No.”
“Sophia.”
Her breathing changed.
Small.
Almost invisible.
But enough.
“Twenty years ago…”
Alessandro froze.
The same number.
The photograph.
The hidden drive.
Sophia continued.
“Your family took something from someone.”
“Who?”
She looked at him.
“Someone who loved you.”
The answer made no sense.
Alessandro stepped closer.
“Explain.”
Sophia looked terrified.
Not of him.
Of what she was about to reveal.
“Your father…”
She stopped.
The heart monitor beside her accelerated.
Emma looked worried.
“Mommy?”
Sophia reached for her daughter’s hand.
Then whispered:
“Your father knew my sister.”
Alessandro felt the room become colder.
“Your sister?”
Sophia closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Who was she?”
A long silence.
Then:
“Her name was Elena.”
The name meant nothing.
Until it did.
Because suddenly, Alessandro remembered something.
A locked room in his father’s old office.
A box he was never allowed to open.
A photograph his father had burned when Alessandro was sixteen.
And his father’s voice.
Never ask about Elena.
Never.
Alessandro stared at Sophia.
“Who was Elena?”
Sophia looked directly into his eyes.
“She was the woman your father promised to protect.”
A pause.
“And the woman he abandoned.”
That night, Alessandro opened the drive.
The encrypted files took thirty minutes to unlock.
Inside were videos.
Documents.
Audio recordings.
Financial transfers.
And one folder.
Created twenty years ago.
The title was simple.
ELENA
Alessandro clicked.
The first video appeared.
A woman sat in a dark room.
She looked tired.
Afraid.
But determined.
She looked directly into the camera.
“My name is Elena Carter.”
Alessandro stopped breathing.
Carter.
Sophia Carter.
Emma Carter.
The woman on the screen continued.
“If you are watching this…”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“It means they failed to erase the truth.”
Alessandro leaned closer.
The woman looked exactly like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.
“My son…”
The video glitched.
Then returned.
And Elena spoke again.
“My son deserves to know who his real family is.”
Alessandro froze.
Son.
The room became silent.
A terrifying thought entered his mind.
A thought he immediately rejected.
Impossible.
The video continued.
“Your father told me he would protect us.”
A tear fell down Elena’s face.
“But the Duca name always protects itself first.”
The screen flickered.
Then one final message appeared.
A date.
Twenty years earlier.
The same year Alessandro’s older brother died.
His brother Marco.
The brother everyone said was killed in a car accident.
The brother whose death changed the Duca family forever.
Alessandro stared at the screen.
Because now he understood something.
The accident might not have been an accident.
And Sophia’s daughter had not randomly walked into his hallway.
She had been brought there by a secret waiting twenty years to return.
At that exact moment…
The lights in the mansion went out.
Every screen turned black.
Jonah’s voice came through the emergency line.
“Alessandro.”
He stood immediately.
“What happened?”
A pause.
Then Jonah answered:
“Someone broke into the estate.”
Alessandro looked toward the sleeping child in the next room.
“Who?”
Jonah’s voice became quieter.
“We don’t know.”
Another pause.
“But they weren’t looking for money.”
Alessandro’s hand tightened.
“What were they looking for?”
Jonah answered:
“The drive.”
And then…
The alarm system showed one more message.
May you like
A message that made Alessandro’s blood run cold.
ACCESS GRANTED: VIVIAN ROSSI
