Chapter 1 - The Little Girl Behind the Locked Door

At midnight, the Duca estate was supposed to be untouchable.
For generations, everyone in Westchester knew one thing about that mansion.
Nothing happened inside those walls unless Alessandro Duca allowed it.
The house was built like a fortress disguised as a palace.
Black iron gates surrounded acres of private land. Security cameras watched every entrance. Armed guards protected every corner. Every employee understood the rules.
The Duca family did not survive because they trusted people.
They survived because they controlled everything.
And Alessandro Duca had inherited that lesson before he was old enough to understand what power truly meant.
At thirty-two years old, Alessandro was already a name people whispered carefully.
Some called him a businessman.
Others called him something much darker.
A man who could destroy an empire before breakfast and rebuild it before dinner.
But inside his private estate, away from the world, Alessandro lived by strict rules.
No surprises.
No emotional attachments.
No weaknesses.
Especially not before his wedding.
Three days.
That was how long remained before Alessandro Duca would marry Vivian Rossi, the woman everyone believed was perfect for him.
She was elegant.
Beautiful.
Powerful.
Born into one of the oldest families in New York’s elite circle.
Their engagement party had been everything society expected.
Hundreds of guests.
Expensive champagne.
White roses imported from Europe.
Cameras flashing.
Politicians, CEOs, and powerful families filling the mansion.
Everyone saw a perfect future.
Nobody saw the storm coming.
Because at 12:14 a.m., after every guest had finally left, Alessandro heard something that had never happened before.
A knock.
A small sound.
Almost impossible to hear.
He was sitting in his bedroom, removing his watch, when it came again.
Three soft taps.
Alessandro froze.
Nobody knocked on his bedroom door.
Not employees.
Not guards.
Not family.
Everyone in the Duca household understood something simple.
When Alessandro closed his door, the world stayed outside.
He walked toward it slowly.
The rain outside was violent.
Lightning flashed through the tall windows, illuminating the old mansion hallway.
For a moment, he wondered if he had imagined it.
Then came the third knock.
Softer.
More desperate.
Alessandro opened the door.
And his entire world changed.
A little girl stood there.
Barefoot.
Wearing pink pajamas.
Her dark curls were messy from sleep.
A worn brown teddy bear was pressed against her chest.
She looked impossibly small inside the enormous hallway.
But what caught Alessandro’s attention was not her size.
It was her face.
Fear.
Pure fear.
The kind no child should ever know.
Her eyes were red from crying.
A tiny hand held onto the teddy bear so tightly that her fingers had turned pale.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then the girl looked up.
“Sir…”
Her voice was barely a whisper.
Alessandro lowered himself slightly.
“What are you doing here?”
The girl looked behind her.
Like she was afraid someone might appear.
Then she grabbed his sleeve.
Her tiny fingers wrapped around the expensive fabric of his shirt.
“Please…”
Her voice broke.
“Please save my mommy.”
The words hit harder than any threat Alessandro had ever received.
He stared at her.
A child.
Inside his private hallway.
At midnight.
Begging him to save someone.
His first instinct was suspicion.
His second was anger.
How had a three-year-old entered this part of the house?
Where were the guards?
Where were the cameras?
Who had allowed this?
But then he saw something else.
The fear in her eyes was real.
Not rehearsed.
Not manipulated.
Real.
Alessandro crouched down.
“Where is your mother?”
The girl looked toward the east corridor.
She tried to speak.
Nothing came out.
Her lips trembled.
“She…”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“She needs help.”
Alessandro stood immediately.
“Show me.”
The girl reached for him.
Without hesitation, he picked her up.
She wrapped her arms around his neck instantly.
The little teddy bear remained trapped between them.
Alessandro noticed something strange.
The child smelled like rain.
Like she had been outside.
But she was inside the mansion.
His eyes narrowed.
Someone had brought her here.
Someone had failed to protect her.
And Alessandro Duca hated failure.
Especially when it involved a child.
They moved through the silent hallway.
The mansion looked different now.
The beautiful decorations from the engagement party felt colder.
The roses Vivian had chosen filled the rooms with a sweet scent.
But underneath it, Alessandro smelled something else.
Fear.
The little girl buried her face against his shoulder.
“Are you scared?” he asked quietly.
She nodded.
“Did someone hurt your mommy?”
The child did not answer.
That answer was enough.
They reached the east corridor.
And Alessandro stopped.
The antique Venetian mirror hanging beside the guest rooms was shattered.
Glass covered the marble floor.
The security light above them flickered.
And beside the broken mirror…
Sophia Carter was lying motionless.
The woman who had worked as a maid in his estate for three years.
The woman Alessandro knew almost nothing about.
She had always been quiet.
Always polite.
Always invisible.
But tonight…
She was bleeding.
“Mommy…”
Emma’s voice broke.
Alessandro lowered her carefully.
“Stay behind me.”
For the first time in years, Alessandro Duca felt something he hated.
Not anger.
Not suspicion.
Fear.
Because someone had attacked a woman inside his home.
And someone had terrified her child enough to make her run barefoot through a mansion full of armed guards.
Then Alessandro noticed the person standing beside Sophia.
Vivian Rossi.
His fiancée.
Still wearing the black dress from the engagement party.
Her perfect appearance was unchanged.
Except for one thing.
Her expression.
She looked terrified.
“Alessandro…”
Her voice shook.
“I can explain.”
He stared at her.
Then at Sophia.
Then at the broken mirror.
“Why are you touching her?”
Vivian looked down.
Only then did Alessandro notice her hands.
She had been holding Sophia’s legs.
Dragging her.
His expression changed.
“I asked you a question.”
Vivian swallowed.
“She fell.”
Silence filled the corridor.
Rain crashed against the windows.
Alessandro looked around.
A woman unconscious.
A broken mirror.
A frightened child.
And his future wife standing over the scene.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
He reached for his phone.
“I’m calling an ambulance.”
Vivian stepped forward.
“Alessandro, wait.”
He looked at her.
For years, people had feared that expression.
Cold.
Controlled.
Unreadable.
But Vivian had never seen it directed at her.
“We have a doctor on the property.”
“She needs an ambulance.”
“She only fell.”
“Then you won’t mind professionals checking.”
Vivian opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Alessandro made the call.
As he spoke with emergency services, his eyes moved around the hallway.
The broken mirror.
The blood.
The security camera above them.
The camera light.
Dark.
Off.
His voice became colder.
“Jonah.”
His security chief appeared moments later.
One look at the scene was enough.
“What happened?”
Alessandro did not answer immediately.
He looked at Emma.
The little girl was holding her teddy bear.
Watching everything.
Waiting for someone to save her mother.
Then Alessandro looked back at the dead camera.
“Find out why that camera stopped working.”
Jonah nodded.
“And nobody touches this hallway.”
His eyes moved toward Vivian.
Especially her.
The ambulance arrived seven minutes later.
But before Sophia was taken away, her eyes opened briefly.
She looked at Alessandro.
Then immediately searched for Emma.
Not herself.
Not her injuries.
Her daughter.
Alessandro stepped closer.
“Your daughter is safe.”
Sophia’s eyes filled with tears.
And with the last strength she had, she whispered:
“Don’t trust…”
Her voice disappeared.
Alessandro leaned closer.
“Don’t trust who?”
But Sophia had already lost consciousness again.
The paramedics carried her away.
And as the ambulance disappeared into the stormy night…
Alessandro Duca realized something terrifying.
The woman who had worked quietly in his house for three years had been hiding a secret.
A secret someone was willing to hurt her for.
May you like
And somehow…
That secret was connected to him.
