Chapter 8 - The Man Behind The Door

The archive door opened.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the person standing there was the last person anyone expected to see.

Dominic stared into the hallway.

The red emergency lights flashed across the marble floor.

Slowly.

Silently.

A figure stood at the entrance.

A woman.

Older.

Pale.

But familiar.

Dominic felt his entire body freeze.

"No..."

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Because he knew that face.

He had seen it in old photographs.

He had seen it in his childhood memories.

He had seen it in dreams he refused to admit he still had.

His mother.

Clara Valente.

Alive.

She stepped into the archive.

Her eyes immediately found Dominic.

And for a moment, neither of them moved.

Fifteen years disappeared.

The room disappeared.

The secrets disappeared.

There was only a son looking at the mother he believed he had lost forever.

Dominic's hands slowly lowered.

"You're alive."

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

Her voice was softer than he remembered.

But it was real.

Dominic took a step forward.

Then stopped.

Because anger returned.

Pain returned.

Every unanswered question returned.

"You watched me mourn you."

Clara looked down.

"I know."

"You let me believe you were dead."

"I had no choice."

Dominic laughed bitterly.

"Everyone says that."

His voice became colder.

"My father."

"Adrian."

"Elena."

"Everyone had a reason."

He looked directly at her.

"What was yours?"

Clara didn't answer immediately.

Because she knew there was no answer that could repair fifteen years.

"I was trying to keep you alive."

Dominic closed his eyes.

Those words again.

The same words everyone used.

The same excuse everyone gave.

But then Clara looked at Lia.

And something changed in her expression.

"You have her."

Dominic frowned.

"Who?"

Clara looked at Elena.

"Lia."

Elena held the little girl closer.

Clara whispered:

"She looks just like her grandmother."

Nobody understood.

Except Elena.

Her face changed.

"What do you mean?"

Clara looked at her.

"You never told him."

Elena looked away.

Dominic noticed.

"Tell me what?"

Nobody answered.

His patience disappeared.

"Tell me."

Clara walked slowly into the room.

"Before Elena became your maid, she was part of something much bigger."

Dominic looked at Elena.

"Something bigger?"

Clara nodded.

"Her family was connected to ours."

Elena remained silent.

"Her father worked for your grandfather."

Dominic frowned.

"Her father?"

Clara nodded.

"And he was the first person who discovered the truth."

"The truth about what?"

Clara looked toward the old files.

"About why Marco disappeared."

Dominic looked at Adrian.

Then at Clara.

"Everyone keeps talking about Marco."

A pause.

"Nobody tells me what actually happened."

Clara took a breath.

"Because the truth would destroy the person you became."

Dominic's expression hardened.

"Maybe I deserve to know."

Clara looked at him.

"You do."

Silence.

Then she said:

"Marco was not taken away because he was dangerous."

Dominic waited.

"He was taken away because he was innocent."

Adrian looked down.

Dominic noticed.

"Adrian."

Adrian didn't respond.

Dominic stepped toward him.

"You knew."

Adrian finally looked up.

"Yes."

"What happened to Marco?"

Adrian's eyes became darker.

"I was Marco."

The room became silent.

Dominic stared.

"You keep saying that."

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

His voice changed.

"I mean I was Marco."

A pause.

"Before I became Adrian."

Dominic looked confused.

"Then why hide?"

Adrian looked at Clara.

"Because she saved me."

Dominic turned.

His mother.

Clara nodded.

"When I discovered what they planned, I knew they would never stop."

"They wanted Marco gone."

"They wanted Dominic controlled."

She looked at her son.

"So I made a choice."

Dominic's voice was quiet.

"You abandoned me."

Clara looked hurt.

"I disappeared to protect you."

"Same thing."

The words hit her.

Because she knew he was right.

She looked down.

"I left because the person hunting you was someone you trusted."

Dominic remembered the message.

The warning.

The birth record.

The signature.

He turned toward Adrian.

"You."

Adrian immediately shook his head.

"No."

"Then who?"

Nobody answered.

Clara looked toward the door.

"He's here."

Everyone froze.

Dominic turned.

"Who?"

Clara's face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

"The person who has been controlling everything."

The lights flickered.

The security system activated again.

A notification appeared on the archive computer.

INTRUDER DETECTED.

One of the guards checked the monitor.

Then went pale.

"Sir..."

Dominic looked at him.

"What?"

The guard swallowed.

"The person entered through the main entrance."

"Impossible."

"The security system recognized him."

Dominic walked toward the screen.

"Who?"

The guard hesitated.

Then turned the monitor around.

The camera showed the mansion entrance.

A man was walking through the doors.

No weapon.

No disguise.

No fear.

Because he knew this house belonged to him.

Dominic stared.

He recognized the face.

Everyone did.

Because the man on the screen was not a stranger.

He was family.

A person whose name appeared in every old document.

A person who had supposedly died twenty years ago.

Matteo stepped backward.

"No."

Lorenzo's expression changed.

"Impossible."

Dominic looked between them.

"Who is he?"

Nobody answered.

The man on the monitor stopped in front of the camera.

Then looked directly into the lens.

As if he knew Dominic was watching.

Then the speakers activated.

The man's voice filled the archive.

"Dominic."

A pause.

"You finally found the truth."

Dominic moved closer to the screen.

"Who are you?"

The man smiled.

A cold, familiar smile.

"The man your family erased before Marco."

Dominic froze.

The man continued:

"The first Valente heir."

The screen flickered.

Then the final image appeared.

A document.

A birth certificate.

And one name.

Dominic's name.

But beneath it was another line.

"STATUS: REPLACEMENT CHILD."

Dominic stared at the words.

Then the man on the screen whispered:

"Your father never chose you."

May you like

A pause.

"He created you."
