Chapter 3 - The Name Hidden In The Darkness

Dominic Valente turned slowly.
The emergency lights painted the room in red shadows.
Every guard had their weapon raised.
Every person inside the mansion was frozen.
Because someone had entered behind him.
Someone who should not have been there.
Someone who had access to every locked door in the Valente estate.
Dominic looked at the figure standing near the entrance.
And for the first time in years...
he didn't know what to say.
"Adrian."
The name left his mouth quietly.
The man standing in the doorway lowered his eyes.
Adrian Morelli.
Dominic's closest friend.
His right hand.
The person who had stood beside him through every business war, every enemy attack, every difficult decision.
The man Dominic trusted enough to leave his life in his hands.
Adrian looked at the screens.
Then at Dominic.
Then at Elena.
Nobody spoke.
The silence was worse than an accusation.
Dominic slowly lowered his gun.
Not because he trusted Adrian.
Because he needed answers.
"What is this?"
Adrian didn't respond.
Dominic stepped closer.
"I asked you a question."
Adrian swallowed.
For the first time, Dominic saw fear on his friend's face.
Not guilt.
Fear.
"Who sent that message?" Dominic asked.
Adrian looked toward the screen.
The name was still there.
His own name.
Underneath it:
ASK HIM WHY HE BURIED YOUR MOTHER.
Dominic watched him carefully.
"Explain."
Adrian took a breath.
"I didn't know this would happen."
That answer made Dominic's expression harden.
"You didn't know what would happen?"
Adrian looked at Elena.
"She came back."
Dominic followed his gaze.
"You knew she would?"
Nobody answered.
And that was an answer.
Dominic turned toward Elena.
"You contacted him."
Elena looked down.
"Yes."
"When?"
"Three months ago."
The room became silent again.
Three months.
For three months, Elena had been hiding information from him.
For three months, she had been somewhere outside his control.
And now she appeared with his father's secrets, a dead man's photograph, and a warning about someone inside his family.
Dominic felt something inside him break.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
"Why didn't you come to me?"
Elena looked at Lia.
"Because I didn't know who I could trust."
The words hurt more than he expected.
Dominic had spent years building an empire where everyone feared him.
But the people closest to him still believed he was someone they needed protection from.
"Even me?"
Elena didn't answer.
She didn't have to.
Dominic looked away.
Then Matteo spoke.
"She's right."
Everyone turned.
The older man stood near the fireplace.
"You have no idea how much of your life was controlled by people around you."
Dominic stared at him.
"You knew?"
Matteo nodded.
"I knew pieces."
"And you said nothing."
"I was trying to keep you alive."
Dominic laughed once.
A cold, humorless sound.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
He pointed toward the screens.
"Everyone keeps hiding things because they think they are protecting me."
He looked around the room.
"But nobody ever asked if I wanted the truth."
Lia moved closer to Elena.
The little girl sensed the tension.
Dominic noticed.
His expression softened slightly.
Then the security alarm stopped.
The sudden silence felt unnatural.
One of the guards looked at his tablet.
"Sir..."
Dominic turned.
"What?"
The guard hesitated.
"The cameras."
"Show me."
The guard connected the system to the main screen.
The image appeared.
The front gate.
The garden.
The driveway.
Empty.
Nothing.
Then the guard changed the angle.
The east hallway.
Empty.
The west corridor.
Empty.
The office.
Empty.
Dominic frowned.
"Someone hacked the system."
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
"You know how?"
Adrian looked uncomfortable.
"Because I've seen it before."
Dominic stared at him.
"Where?"
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
"Your father's private files."
The room went quiet.
Dominic remembered the photograph.
His father's face beside Elena.
The hidden symbol.
The message.
The truth started before you.
"Take me to the archives."
Matteo immediately shook his head.
"No."
Dominic looked at him.
"That's not a request."
"You don't understand."
"Then explain."
Matteo stepped forward.
"The archives were sealed after your father's death."
"By who?"
Matteo looked away.
"By your mother."
Dominic froze.
His mother.
Another dead person.
Another secret.
Another name connected to a lie.
"My mother died before my father."
Matteo nodded.
"I know."
"Then how could she seal anything?"
Nobody answered.
Dominic looked at Adrian.
"Tell me."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"I think your mother wasn't who you believed she was."
Dominic stared.
"My entire life..."
His voice became quieter.
"Everyone has been lying to me."
No one disagreed.
That was the worst part.
An hour later, Dominic stood inside the old archive room beneath the estate.
A place even most family members didn't know existed.
The room smelled like old paper and dust.
Thousands of documents filled the shelves.
Records.
Photographs.
Contracts.
Secrets.
His family's history was stored here.
But Dominic had never been allowed inside.
Until now.
Matteo unlocked the final cabinet.
Inside was a single black folder.
No label.
No date.
Only one symbol.
The same symbol from the photograph.
Dominic reached for it.
His hand stopped.
Because he recognized the handwriting on the cover.
His father's handwriting.
He opened the folder.
The first page contained a photograph.
Not of Elena.
Not of his father.
Of a baby.
A newborn child.
On the back of the photograph was written:
VALENTE HEIR.
Dominic stared.
"What is this?"
Nobody spoke.
He turned the page.
A birth certificate.
His eyes moved across the paper.
Then stopped.
The name on the document made his entire body go cold.
Because it wasn't his name.
It was another child's name.
A child born before him.
A child his family had erased.
Dominic looked at Matteo.
"Who is this?"
Matteo remained silent.
"Who is this child?"
The older man finally whispered:
"Your brother."
Dominic stepped back.
"No."
"He was born two years before you."
"My father never had another son."
Matteo looked at him.
"Your father made sure nobody knew."
Dominic flipped through the documents faster.
Medical records.
Letters.
Photographs.
Every page revealed another piece of a life that had been hidden from him.
Then he found the final document.
A handwritten note.
From his father.
Dominic read the first line.
My son Dominic can never know the truth.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
Below that was another sentence.
The person who betrayed us was not outside the family.
It was someone who shared our blood.
A sound came from behind him.
A quiet step.
Everyone turned.
Elena stood near the doorway.
Her face had changed.
Like she had been waiting years for this moment.
Dominic looked at her.
"What else did you know?"
Elena didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at the folder in his hand.
And whispered:
"Dominic..."
A pause.
Then her eyes moved toward the final page.
"The child in that photograph..."
Her voice trembled.
"...is not your brother."
Dominic stared at her.
"Then who is he?"
Elena opened her mouth.
But before she could speak, the archive door behind them slowly unlocked from the outside.

Someone had entered the room.
And the voice that followed belonged to someone Dominic thought was buried forever.
