Chapter 2 - The Woman Who Was Never Supposed To Return

Dominic Valente stopped breathing for a second.

The security monitor showed Elena Rossi standing outside the front gate.

Alive.

After twelve hours of searching.

After every camera showed her leaving alone.

After every possible explanation had already failed.

She was there.

But the man beside her made Dominic’s hand tighten around the phone.

Because he knew that face.

He had seen it only once.

Ten years ago.

At his father’s funeral.

A man who had stood at the back of the church and disappeared before anyone could speak to him.

A man everyone believed was dead.

Matteo Vescari.

Dominic’s father’s closest adviser.

And the man who knew every secret the Valente family had buried.

The alarm continued flashing across the security room.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even the guards who had faced armed enemies without hesitation looked uncertain.

Because there were some ghosts that were more dangerous than living enemies.

Dominic picked up the microphone.

"Open the gate."

The head of security looked at him immediately.

"Sir, are you sure?"

Dominic kept his eyes on the screen.

"No."

A pause.

"But open it anyway."

The massive iron gate slowly moved.

Elena walked through first.

She looked different.

Not older.

Just tired.

Like someone who had spent years running from something that never stopped chasing her.

Her eyes immediately searched the mansion.

Not for Dominic.

For Lia.

The moment she saw him standing there, her expression changed.

Fear.

Relief.

And something close to regret.

"Where is my daughter?"

Those were her first words.

Not hello.

Not an apology.

Not an explanation.

Dominic stared at her.

"You disappear for hours."

Elena said nothing.

"You leave your daughter alone with a suitcase and a secret."

Her eyes lowered.

"And now you walk back here asking where she is?"

A tear almost escaped her eye.

Almost.

But she stopped it.

"Where is Lia?"

Dominic stepped closer.

"Safe."

Only one word.

But Elena finally breathed.

The reaction told Dominic everything.

She hadn't run away from Lia.

She had been trying to protect her.

He looked past her.

At Matteo.

The older man stood silently near the gate.

His face had barely changed after ten years.

That bothered Dominic more than anything.

People who carried secrets usually looked afraid.

Matteo looked prepared.

"Why is he here?" Dominic asked.

Elena glanced back.

For the first time, fear appeared clearly on her face.

"Because he knows why they came for me."

Dominic studied her.

"Who?"

Elena looked toward the mansion windows.

Toward the room where Lia was sleeping.

Then she whispered:

"The same people who killed your father."

The words landed like a bullet.

Dominic had spent ten years accepting his father's death.

A heart attack.

That was what everyone said.

A natural death.

A clean ending.

But Elena was standing in front of him telling him everything had been a lie.

"Careful," Dominic said quietly.

His voice became colder.

"You're accusing people who have been dead for a decade."

Elena looked directly at him.

"No."

She shook her head.

"I'm accusing the people who benefited from their deaths."

Before Dominic could answer, the mansion doors opened.

Small footsteps echoed through the marble hallway.

"Lia."

The little girl appeared holding her stuffed rabbit.

The moment she saw Elena, she ran.

Elena dropped to her knees.

Her daughter crashed into her arms.

And for a few seconds, Dominic saw something he rarely witnessed.

A person who wasn't afraid.

A mother.

Elena held Lia tightly.

"I'm sorry."

The little girl buried her face against her.

"You said you wouldn't leave me."

"I know."

"You promised."

"I know."

Dominic looked away.

He had seen violence.

Betrayal.

People begging for their lives.

But a child asking why her mother left was something no weapon could fix.

Then Lia pulled back.

She looked at Elena.

"Did you tell him?"

Elena froze.

Dominic noticed immediately.

"Tell me what?"

Lia looked at her mother.

Then at Dominic.

"The thing in the envelope."

Silence.

Elena closed her eyes.

"Who told you to say that?"

"No one."

Lia pointed toward the office.

"Grandma told me."

Dominic's face changed.

"Grandma?"

Elena went pale.

"Lia..."

But it was too late.

Dominic heard the word.

And he knew exactly what it meant.

His grandmother had been dead for fifteen years.

His father's mother.

The woman whose portrait hung in the east hallway.

The woman who supposedly died before Dominic took control of the family.

He looked at Elena.

"What did she tell my daughter?"

Elena didn't answer.

"Elena."

Her hands tightened around Lia.

"Your grandmother knew about me before you did."

Dominic stared.

"That makes no sense."

"It will."

She looked at Matteo.

The older man finally spoke.

"Dominic, there are things your father hid from you."

Dominic turned toward him.

"You have five seconds to start explaining."

Matteo didn't react.

"Your father didn't die because he was sick."

The room became silent.

"He died because he found out who was controlling the Valente family from the shadows."

Dominic stepped forward.

"And who was that?"

Matteo looked toward the old family portrait hanging above the fireplace.

Then he said something Dominic never expected.

"Someone in this house."

The words created a silence so heavy that nobody moved.

Dominic had spent his entire life surrounded by people.

Servants.

Bodyguards.

Business partners.

Family.

But suddenly every face felt unfamiliar.

Every memory felt questionable.

"You're telling me someone inside my own home killed my father?"

Matteo nodded.

"Yes."

"Who?"

The older man hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Dominic noticed.

"You know."

Matteo looked down.

"I do."

"Then say the name."

Before Matteo could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

The entire mansion fell into darkness.

The security system screamed.

Guards immediately reached for their weapons.

Lia grabbed Elena's hand.

Dominic moved in front of them without thinking.

Protecting them.

Protecting a child.

Protecting the woman who had brought chaos back into his life.

A single emergency light turned on.

Red.

Dim.

Cold.

Then every security monitor in the room activated at once.

One message appeared on every screen.

Not a warning.

Not a threat.

A name.

Dominic stared at it.

His blood ran cold.

Because it was the name of the person he trusted most.

The name of the person who had been standing beside him for years.

The name appeared again.

And beneath it was a second message.

"Ask him why he buried your mother."

May you like

Dominic slowly turned around.

Because behind him, someone had just entered the room.
