Chapter 9 - The Man Behind The Empire

Sebastian Cole had spent his entire life searching for enemies.

But he had always searched in the wrong direction.

He looked outside.

He looked at rival organizations.

He looked at criminals who wanted his territory.

He looked at anyone who carried a weapon or made a threat.

He never looked at the man sitting beside him.

Richard Vale.

The man who knew every account.

Every company.

Every weakness.

The man who had helped Sebastian turn a small operation into a powerful empire.

The man who smiled during meetings.

The man who shook his hand.

The man who called him family.

Sebastian stared at the photograph Madeline had given him.

Richard.

His father.

Alexander.

Together.

A secret meeting.

A secret that had been buried for years.

Madeline watched him carefully.

"I know what you're thinking."

Sebastian didn't look away.

"Do you?"

She nodded.

"You're wondering how someone so close could betray you."

His jaw tightened.

"Because I should have seen it."

"No."

Madeline stepped closer.

"Because you trusted him."

Sebastian finally looked at her.

"Trust gets people killed."

Madeline shook her head.

"No."

Her voice softened.

"Trust is what makes people human."

The words reminded him of the woman she had always been.

The woman who saw something inside him that everyone else ignored.

For a moment, Sebastian forgot about revenge.

Forgot about Richard.

Forgot about the years stolen from him.

He only saw Madeline.

Alive.

Standing in front of him.

But the moment passed.

Because there was still a war waiting.

"Where is Richard now?"

Madeline looked down.

"He knows you found me."

Sebastian froze.

"How?"

"Because he always knew."

A cold feeling moved through him.

"What does that mean?"

Madeline took a breath.

"Richard was never reacting to events."

She looked at him.

"He was creating them."

Back in Houston, Sebastian returned to the Cole headquarters with a different understanding of his own empire.

Everything looked the same.

The same building.

The same people.

The same routines.

But now he saw something he had never noticed before.

The cracks.

The hidden movements.

The small details.

The things a person only noticed after betrayal.

Vincent was waiting when Sebastian arrived.

The moment their eyes met, neither man spoke.

There was too much history.

Too many memories.

Too many unanswered questions.

Finally, Vincent said:

"You know."

Sebastian stopped.

"Yes."

Vincent looked down.

"I was hoping you would never find out."

The words surprised Sebastian.

Not because Vincent admitted it.

Because he sounded guilty.

Not afraid.

Guilty.

"You knew Madeline was alive."

Vincent nodded.

"Yes."

"You let me believe she was dead."

"Yes."

The honesty almost made it worse.

Sebastian stepped closer.

"Why?"

Vincent looked at him.

"Because your father asked me."

Silence.

Sebastian's expression changed.

"My father?"

"He knew Richard was dangerous."

Vincent took a breath.

"He knew Richard had been moving money, manipulating people, and building influence inside your organization."

Sebastian stared.

"Then why didn't he tell me?"

"Because he was dying."

A pause.

"And because Richard had already planned for that."

Sebastian said nothing.

Vincent continued.

"Your father knew if Richard discovered he was investigating him, he would come after you."

Sebastian looked away.

"So everyone decided to control my life."

Vincent lowered his eyes.

"I thought I was protecting you."

Sebastian's voice became colder.

"By taking away my choice?"

Vincent had no answer.

Because he knew Sebastian was right.

For years, everyone had decided what Sebastian could handle.

What he could know.

What he could survive.

Nobody asked him.

Nobody trusted him with the truth.

"You should have told me."

"I know."

The simple answer hurt.

Sebastian turned away.

Because the anger was there.

But so was the understanding.

Vincent had betrayed him.

But he had not done it for power.

He had done it because he was afraid.

Richard had done it because he wanted control.

And that difference mattered.

"Where is Richard?"

Vincent looked up.

"We don't know."

Sebastian looked at him.

"You were watching him?"

"Not successfully."

Vincent placed a file on the table.

"He disappeared two hours after you left for New York."

Sebastian opened it.

Inside were security images.

Richard leaving the city.

Richard accessing private accounts.

Richard meeting with unknown people.

Then one image stopped Sebastian.

A warehouse.

A woman.

Madeline.

Taken months earlier.

Sebastian looked closer.

"Where?"

Vincent answered:

"The old Cole shipping facility."

Sebastian's expression changed.

"Impossible."

"Why?"

"That place was closed fifteen years ago."

Vincent nodded.

"Exactly."

Sebastian looked at the photograph.

A place connected to his father.

A place connected to Richard.

A place where secrets had been buried.

"He's going back there."

Vincent nodded.

"That's what we believe."

Sebastian closed the file.

"Then that's where we go."

The old shipping facility stood at the edge of the city.

Forgotten.

Abandoned.

A place that once represented the beginning of the Cole empire.

Sebastian walked through the broken entrance.

Every step carried memories.

His father bringing him there as a young man.

Teaching him business.

Teaching him survival.

Teaching him never to show weakness.

Now Sebastian wondered how much of that lesson had been a lie.

Vincent followed behind.

"This place feels wrong."

Sebastian looked around.

"It was always wrong."

They entered the main warehouse.

The lights turned on.

Slowly.

One by one.

Sebastian stopped.

Someone had been waiting.

Richard Vale stepped out from the shadows.

Older.

Calmer.

Almost relaxed.

Like he wasn't facing the man whose entire life he had destroyed.

"Sebastian."

The name sounded almost friendly.

Sebastian stared.

"You always did like dramatic entrances."

Richard smiled.

"And you always did like pretending you weren't emotional."

Vincent stepped forward.

Sebastian stopped him.

"No."

His eyes stayed on Richard.

"This is my conversation."

Richard looked amused.

"You finally know."

Sebastian's voice was cold.

"Why?"

Richard sighed.

"Because your father built something too powerful."

"What?"

"This empire."

Richard looked around.

"Everyone thinks your father built it through strength."

A pause.

"He didn't."

Sebastian waited.

"He built it through fear."

Richard stepped closer.

"And fear always collapses."

Sebastian stared.

"So you destroyed my family to take control?"

Richard smiled slightly.

"No."

He looked directly at him.

"I destroyed your family because your father refused to give me what I deserved."

Sebastian's eyes narrowed.

"What did you deserve?"

Richard's expression changed.

"Everything."

The answer was simple.

And terrifying.

"I helped build this organization."

Richard continued.

"I created opportunities. I moved money. I protected your father."

Sebastian shook his head.

"You wanted power."

Richard smiled.

"Of course."

A pause.

"Everyone does."

Sebastian looked at him.

"And Madeline?"

Richard's expression became colder.

"She found things she shouldn't have found."

Sebastian's hands tightened.

"You tried to kill her."

Richard didn't deny it.

"I tried to remove a problem."

The words changed everything.

Not an accident.

Not a mistake.

A decision.

Sebastian moved forward.

"You took five years from me."

Richard looked at him.

"You were weak because of her."

Sebastian froze.

Richard continued.

"You had everything until Madeline."

The anger inside Sebastian rose.

But he controlled it.

Because now he understood.

Richard didn't hate Madeline.

He hated what she represented.

Love.

Family.

Something Richard could never control.

"You were wrong."

Richard frowned.

"About what?"

Sebastian looked toward the warehouse entrance.

Then back at him.

"She didn't make me weak."

A pause.

"She made me human."

For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.

Because he realized something.

Sebastian wasn't the same man he manipulated five years ago.

He wasn't alone anymore.

Richard stepped back.

"You think you won?"

Sebastian stared.

"You lost the moment you touched my family."

Richard smiled.

Then reached into his coat.

Vincent immediately moved.

But it was too late.

Richard pressed a button.

The warehouse doors locked.

And a voice came through the speakers.

A voice Sebastian recognized.

A voice that made his blood run cold.

"Hello, Sebastian."

Madeline's voice.

But she wasn't speaking freely.

She sounded afraid.

Richard smiled.

"Before this ends..."

He looked at Sebastian.

"You should know."

A pause.

"Madeline wasn't the only person I kept from you."

Sebastian stared.

The speakers crackled.

Then another voice appeared.

A child's voice.

"Dad?"

Sebastian stopped breathing.

Lucas.

Richard watched his reaction.

And smiled.

"Now you understand."

May you like

"The boy was never the secret."

"The boy was the leverage."
