Chapter 4 - The Enemy Who Knew His Secret

Sebastian Cole stared at the photograph on his phone and felt something inside him go completely still.

Madeline.

Alive.

Standing outside the same house where his son had been hiding.

For five years, he had carried the weight of her death.

For five years, he had visited a grave and apologized to a woman who was never there.

And now, in a single moment, everything he believed had been torn apart.

Emma watched his face carefully.

She already knew.

The moment Sebastian saw the photograph, she knew the truth had finally reached him.

"You didn't know."

Sebastian slowly looked at her.

"Know what?"

Emma lowered her eyes.

"That she survived."

The room became silent.

Lucas was still standing nearby, holding a wooden toy car in his hand.

He didn't understand the conversation.

He didn't understand why the man who looked so much like him suddenly looked like the entire world had collapsed.

Sebastian walked closer to Emma.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Start talking."

Emma swallowed.

"Madeline was alive after she left Houston."

"How long?"

"Almost four years."

Sebastian's jaw tightened.

"Four years?"

Emma nodded.

"She watched Lucas grow up."

The pain in Sebastian's expression was impossible to hide.

He looked toward his son.

Four years.

Madeline had held him.

She had heard his first words.

She had watched him grow.

And Sebastian had been somewhere else, believing she was gone.

"Why?"

The question came quietly.

Not angry.

Not yet.

"Why didn't she come back?"

Emma took a breath.

"Because she believed someone close to you was trying to find Lucas."

Sebastian's eyes hardened.

"Someone close to me."

Emma nodded.

"Madeline discovered that information about your life was being leaked."

Sebastian said nothing.

But his mind immediately began moving.

People.

Names.

Possibilities.

The Cole organization had always been built on loyalty.

Everyone who worked for him understood one rule.

Family came first.

Anyone who betrayed that rule paid the price.

"Who knew about Lucas?"

Emma looked uncomfortable.

"Very few people."

"Who?"

"Madeline."

A pause.

"Me."

Another pause.

"And one other person."

Sebastian stepped forward.

"Who?"

Emma looked at Lucas.

Then back at him.

"Your father."

The answer surprised him.

"My father is dead."

"I know."

Sebastian stared at her.

"Then explain."

Emma walked toward the table and picked up an old notebook.

"Before Madeline disappeared, she met with your father."

Sebastian frowned.

"My father hated secrets."

"Madeline said he was the only person she trusted enough to ask for help."

Sebastian looked at the notebook.

"What was in here?"

"Things she discovered."

Emma handed it to him.

Sebastian opened the cover.

Inside were pages of notes.

Dates.

Names.

Locations.

Financial records.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then he stopped.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Victor Raines.

Sebastian's expression changed.

Victor.

A man who had worked with the Cole organization for twelve years.

A man who had been beside Sebastian during some of the hardest moments.

A man who had attended Madeline's funeral.

"He knew."

Emma nodded.

"Madeline believed he did."

Sebastian closed the notebook.

The anger came slowly.

Not explosive.

Not emotional.

Something colder.

Something far more dangerous.

"Why would Victor do this?"

Emma shook her head.

"I don't know."

Sebastian looked at Lucas.

Because now everything connected.

The disappearance.

The lies.

The hidden child.

Someone had taken five years from him.

Someone had taken five years from Lucas.

And someone had taken Madeline away.

Sebastian picked up his phone.

"Vincent."

The call connected instantly.

"Yes?"

"I need everything on Victor Raines."

There was a brief silence.

Vincent understood immediately.

"Sebastian..."

"Everything."

"What happened?"

Sebastian looked at the photograph of Madeline.

"Someone inside my organization knew about my son."

The silence on the other end was enough.

Vincent knew what that meant.

"Are you sure?"

"No."

Sebastian looked toward Lucas.

"But I will be."

He ended the call.

Emma watched him.

"Sebastian."

He turned.

"There is something else."

His eyes narrowed.

"What?"

"Madeline didn't just leave because she was scared."

Sebastian waited.

"She was trying to come back."

Those words hurt more than anything else.

"Come back?"

Emma nodded.

"She planned to return when Lucas was safe."

"Then why didn't she?"

Emma looked down.

"Because someone found her first."

The room froze.

Sebastian's voice became quieter.

"What happened?"

Emma hesitated.

"Three years ago, Madeline disappeared again."

Sebastian stared.

"Again?"

"Yes."

"You said she was alive."

"She was."

Emma looked toward the window.

"But after that day, nobody knew where she went."

Sebastian felt his chest tighten.

"Nobody?"

Emma shook her head.

"Except whoever took her."

The words stayed between them.

For years, Sebastian thought he lost Madeline once.

Now he realized he had lost her twice.

And the second time, someone had made sure he never found out.

A sound came from the hallway.

Lucas.

The boy stood there quietly.

Sebastian immediately changed.

The anger disappeared.

The danger disappeared.

Only a father remained.

"Hey."

Lucas looked at him.

"Are you leaving?"

Sebastian froze.

The question was innocent.

But it carried a fear that broke something inside him.

Because Lucas had spent his entire life losing people.

His mother.

His home.

His sense of safety.

Sebastian walked toward him.

"No."

Lucas looked up.

"You're staying?"

Sebastian knelt down.

"Yes."

"For how long?"

Sebastian looked into his son's eyes.

As long as it took.

Forever if necessary.

But he couldn't say that yet.

Instead, he said:

"Until you're safe."

Lucas studied him.

Then nodded.

A small smile appeared.

Sebastian had faced thousands of people.

Negotiated with criminals.

Controlled entire businesses.

But that small smile felt like the greatest victory of his life.

Later that night, Sebastian sat outside Lucas's room.

He refused to leave.

Vincent arrived quietly.

The moment he entered, Sebastian knew something had happened.

"What?"

Vincent placed his phone on the table.

"We found something."

Sebastian stood.

"What?"

"Victor Raines left the city three days ago."

Sebastian's expression darkened.

"Where?"

"We don't know yet."

"Find out."

Vincent hesitated.

"There is more."

Sebastian waited.

"We checked the old records from five years ago."

"And?"

Vincent looked serious.

"Madeline's disappearance wasn't random."

Sebastian's eyes narrowed.

"What do you mean?"

"Someone accessed security footage from the night she vanished."

Sebastian stepped closer.

"Someone erased it."

"Yes."

"Who?"

Vincent looked down.

"The access code belonged to someone with executive clearance."

Sebastian already knew where this was going.

"Whose?"

Vincent looked at him.

"Yours."

The words hit hard.

Sebastian stared.

"My clearance?"

"Someone used your authorization."

"Impossible."

"I know."

Sebastian looked toward Lucas's room.

Someone had used his name.

His power.

His access.

To destroy his family.

And suddenly, another thought entered his mind.

A terrifying one.

If someone could use his identity five years ago...

Maybe they had been closer than anyone realized.

Sebastian turned back to Vincent.

"Lock everything down."

Vincent nodded.

"Everyone?"

"Everyone."

A pause.

Then Sebastian added:

"And don't tell anyone about Lucas."

Vincent understood.

Because if someone inside the organization had betrayed him once...

They would do it again.

Sebastian walked to the window.

The city lights reflected in the glass.

Five years ago, he lost Madeline because he trusted the wrong people.

He would not make that mistake again.

Behind him, Lucas slept peacefully.

For the first time in years, Sebastian had something worth protecting.

But somewhere in Houston, someone was watching.

Someone who knew Lucas existed.

Someone who knew Sebastian had found him.

And that person sent one message before disappearing into the night.

"Sebastian Cole knows the truth."

May you like

A reply came seconds later.

"Then finish what we started."
