Chapter 5 - The Betrayal Inside The Empire

Sebastian Cole had spent his entire life learning one rule.
Never trust anyone completely.
It was the reason he was still alive.
The reason enemies feared him.
The reason his organization had survived when countless others had collapsed under betrayal and greed.
But there was one person he had never questioned.
Victor Raines.
For twelve years, Victor had been more than an employee.
He had been family.
He was there when Sebastian first built his empire.
He was there when Sebastian’s father died.
He was there when Madeline entered Sebastian’s life and became the only person who could soften the man everyone else feared.
And now every piece of evidence pointed toward him.
Sebastian stood inside the private conference room of the Cole headquarters, staring at the large screen in front of him.
Documents.
Financial transfers.
Security records.
Names.
Everything Vincent had gathered overnight.
Everything that suggested the impossible.
Victor Raines had betrayed him.
Vincent stood beside the table.
"We traced several hidden accounts."
Sebastian said nothing.
"All connected to companies that don't officially exist."
"Who owns them?"
Vincent looked at the file.
"We're still investigating."
Sebastian turned.
"No."
Vincent paused.
Sebastian walked closer to the screen.
"You're looking at the wrong question."
"What question should we ask?"
Sebastian's eyes remained cold.
"Not who owns them."
A pause.
"Who benefits from them?"
Vincent understood immediately.
Because Sebastian knew something most people didn't.
Money was never the real reason people betrayed others.
Money was just the excuse.
The real reason was power.
Control.
Revenge.
"There's something else," Vincent said.
Sebastian looked at him.
"Say it."
"We found records from the week Madeline disappeared."
Sebastian's expression changed.
"Where?"
"An old storage facility outside Houston."
Sebastian stepped closer.
"What about it?"
"Victor rented it under a fake name."
Silence.
For five years, Sebastian had searched for answers.
And now they were finally appearing.
One after another.
But every answer brought another question.
"What was inside?"
Vincent hesitated.
"Nothing."
Sebastian narrowed his eyes.
"Nothing?"
"The facility was emptied before we arrived."
"By who?"
"We don't know."
Sebastian looked away.
Someone was always one step ahead.
Someone knew exactly where they were looking.
That meant one thing.
There was still someone protecting Victor.
Or someone above him.
Sebastian looked at the clock.
"Where is Lucas?"
"Emma's with him."
"Good."
Vincent studied him.
"You haven't slept."
Sebastian ignored the comment.
"Neither has anyone else."
Vincent almost smiled.
That was the Sebastian he knew.
The man who could turn exhaustion into determination.
But Vincent also saw something different.
A man who was no longer fighting only for himself.
"You really believe Madeline is alive?"
The question stopped Sebastian.
For a moment, the cold expression disappeared.
He looked down at the photograph of Lucas on the table.
Then at the picture of Madeline.
"I don't know."
Vincent waited.
"But I know she didn't leave me."
The answer was quiet.
Certain.
"She spent years protecting our son."
Sebastian picked up the photograph.
"She believed I would find him eventually."
His eyes hardened.
"She believed I was still the man she loved."
Vincent looked away.
Because he understood.
That was the hardest part.
Sebastian wasn't just trying to uncover a betrayal.
He was trying to prove that the woman he loved never stopped believing in him.
Later that afternoon, Sebastian returned to the house.
For the first time since arriving, he allowed himself to slow down.
Lucas was sitting at the kitchen table drawing.
When Sebastian entered, the boy immediately looked up.
"You're back."
The simple happiness in his voice affected Sebastian more than he expected.
"Yes."
Lucas smiled.
Emma watched from the counter.
"You know, he asked about you every hour."
Sebastian looked at Lucas.
"Really?"
Lucas nodded.
"Vincent said you are important."
Sebastian glanced toward Vincent.
The older man raised his hands.
"I didn't say anything bad."
Lucas looked serious.
"Are you a superhero?"
Sebastian almost laughed.
"No."
"But you protect people."
Sebastian looked at him.
"Sometimes."
Lucas thought about that.
"Mom said you protected her."
The words froze him.
Sebastian slowly sat across from him.
"What else did your mother say?"
Lucas looked at his drawing.
"She said you were lonely."
Sebastian felt the words hit.
"Lonely?"
Lucas nodded.
"She said you acted angry when you were sad."
Sebastian looked down.
Because Madeline had always understood him.
Even when nobody else did.
"Did she tell you anything else about me?"
Lucas smiled.
"She said you liked coffee but pretended you liked whiskey more."
For a second, Sebastian forgot how to react.
Then he laughed.
A real laugh.
The kind he hadn't heard from himself in years.
Emma smiled quietly.
"She knew you very well."
Sebastian looked at the boy in front of him.
"I wish I knew you."
Lucas looked confused.
"But you do now."
The innocence of those words almost broke him.
You do now.
As if five missing years could disappear.
As if time could simply start again.
Sebastian reached across the table.
Lucas took his hand.
And for the first time, Sebastian felt like he wasn't chasing something lost.
He was building something new.
But the moment didn't last.
Vincent's phone rang.
He stepped away to answer.
Sebastian noticed his expression change.
Immediately, he knew.
Something was wrong.
Vincent ended the call.
"Sebastian."
The tone was enough.
"What happened?"
"We found Victor."
Sebastian stood.
"Where?"
"Chicago."
"Send the team."
Vincent hesitated.
"No."
Sebastian looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because he contacted us first."
The room went silent.
"What did he say?"
Vincent looked at his phone.
"He requested a meeting."
Sebastian's eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
Vincent read the message.
"He said he knows what happened to Madeline."
Sebastian froze.
The name alone changed everything.
"When?"
"Tonight."
Sebastian looked toward Lucas.
Then back at Vincent.
A decision had already formed.
"I'm going."
Vincent shook his head.
"Sebastian, it could be a trap."
"I know."
"Then why?"
Sebastian picked up his jacket.
"Because if Victor knows where Madeline is..."
He looked at the photograph.
"...I need answers."
Emma stepped forward.
"You can't leave Lucas."
Sebastian looked at her.
"I know."
That was the hardest part.
For years, he had chased answers.
Now he finally had something to lose.
"I won't be gone long."
Lucas appeared in the doorway.
"You're leaving?"
Sebastian stopped.
The question was familiar.
A child afraid of being abandoned.
He walked over.
"I have to find something."
Lucas looked worried.
"Are you coming back?"
Sebastian knelt.
This time, he didn't hesitate.
"Yes."
"Promise?"
Sebastian looked into his son's eyes.
The same eyes he saw every morning in the mirror.
"I promise."
Hours later, Sebastian landed in Chicago.
The meeting location was an abandoned private warehouse near the river.
A place chosen by someone who wanted control.
Sebastian arrived with Vincent.
No security team.
No weapons visible.
Just two men walking into darkness.
Inside, Victor Raines waited.
Older.
Tired.
Different from the man Sebastian remembered.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Victor said:
"You found him."
Sebastian's eyes sharpened.
"You knew."
Victor looked down.
"Yes."
The answer was immediate.
No denial.
No excuse.
Sebastian stepped closer.
"You knew I had a son."
Victor swallowed.
"Yes."
"You knew Madeline was alive."
Another pause.
"Yes."
The anger inside Sebastian grew.
But he controlled it.
"Then tell me why."
Victor looked at him.
And for the first time, Sebastian saw something unexpected.
Fear.
Not fear of him.
Fear of what was coming.
"Because Madeline wasn't running from you."
Sebastian waited.
"She was running from someone who had more power than you."
The words made no sense.
"More power than me?"
Victor nodded.
"Someone who has been controlling your organization from the shadows."
Sebastian stared.
"Who?"
Victor opened his mouth.
But before he could answer—
The lights went out.
A gunshot echoed through the warehouse.
Victor collapsed.
Sebastian immediately moved.
"Down!"
Vincent pulled him behind cover.
More shots followed.
Sebastian looked toward Victor.
The man who had betrayed him.
The man who held the answers.
And now the man who might die before revealing them.
Sebastian crawled toward him.
Victor was bleeding.
Barely conscious.
Sebastian grabbed his shoulder.
"Who did this?"
Victor struggled to speak.
His eyes focused on Sebastian.
Then he whispered:
"Your father..."
Sebastian froze.
"My father is dead."
Victor shook his head weakly.
"No..."
A final breath.
Then:
"He never told you the truth."
Sebastian stared at him.
The warehouse became silent.
But inside Sebastian's mind, everything was screaming.
Because five years ago, he thought he lost Madeline.
Tonight, he discovered something even more impossible.
May you like
His father had been hiding secrets.
And the truth about his family had started long before Madeline disappeared.
