Chapter 10 - The Family He Fought To Protect

"Dad?"
Sebastian Cole stopped breathing.
For five years, he had imagined hearing that word.
He imagined it in different ways.
A child running toward him.
A small hand holding his.
A voice calling him after a long day.
But never like this.
Never through a speaker inside an abandoned warehouse while the man who destroyed his family stood smiling in front of him.
Richard Vale watched the reaction on Sebastian's face.
And he enjoyed it.
That was the part Sebastian hated most.
Not the threat.
Not the danger.
The satisfaction.
Richard had spent years studying him.
He knew exactly where to hurt him.
Sebastian's eyes moved toward the speaker.
"Lucas?"
A small voice answered.
"Dad?"
The sound almost broke him.
Almost.
But Sebastian Cole had survived too long to let an enemy see him lose control.
He slowly looked back at Richard.
"You touched my son."
Richard smiled.
"And now you understand."
Vincent stepped closer.
His expression was different.
No longer controlled.
No longer calm.
Pure anger.
"You made a mistake."
Richard looked at him.
"Did I?"
Vincent's fists tightened.
"You think Sebastian is weak because he loves his family."
Richard laughed.
"No."
He looked at Sebastian.
"I think he is predictable."
The warehouse remained silent.
Then Richard pressed another button.
A screen behind him turned on.
A video appeared.
Lucas was sitting in a small room.
Emma was beside him.
Both alive.
Both scared.
Sebastian's eyes immediately searched the screen.
"Where is Madeline?"
Richard smiled.
"Always asking about her."
A pause.
"Even after everything."
Sebastian's voice became colder.
"Where is she?"
Richard ignored the question.
"Do you know what your problem was, Sebastian?"
He walked slowly around the warehouse.
"You thought power meant controlling people."
Sebastian watched him.
"But your father understood something you never did."
Richard stopped.
"Power means controlling what people love."
The words disgusted Sebastian.
Because they revealed exactly who Richard was.
Not a businessman.
Not a strategist.
A man who saw human beings as pieces on a board.
"You were never trying to take my empire."
Richard smiled.
"Finally."
A pause.
"I wanted your loyalty."
Sebastian frowned.
"What?"
Richard looked toward the screen.
"Your father chose you."
The words carried years of resentment.
"He chose his son."
Richard's expression darkened.
"After everything I did."
Sebastian understood.
This was never only about money.
It was about being overlooked.
About jealousy.
About a man who spent his life believing he deserved something that belonged to someone else.
Richard continued.
"I built everything with him."
"You helped."
Richard's face changed.
"No."
His voice became sharper.
"I sacrificed."
A pause.
"And he rewarded you."
Sebastian stared.
"So you destroyed my family because you were jealous."
Richard smiled.
"That's a simple way to say it."
"It's the truth."
For the first time, Richard looked angry.
"Truth?"
He laughed.
"You want truth?"
He stepped closer.
"The truth is your father knew you were too emotional to lead."
Sebastian said nothing.
"The truth is Madeline made you weak."
Vincent moved forward.
"Enough."
Richard looked at him.
"You."
A cold smile appeared.
"Always the loyal soldier."
Vincent's expression hardened.
"You don't know anything about loyalty."
Richard laughed.
"Don't I?"
He looked at Sebastian.
"Ask him."
Silence.
Sebastian slowly turned.
"Ask him what?"
Richard smiled.
"Ask Vincent why Madeline disappeared."
Sebastian's eyes moved to Vincent.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Vincent looked down.
And that was enough.
Sebastian's expression changed.
"Vincent."
His friend closed his eyes.
"Sebastian..."
"What did you do?"
The silence answered before Vincent did.
"I helped her disappear."
The words hurt.
Even though Sebastian already knew.
Even though he had suspected.
Hearing it was different.
"You knew."
Vincent nodded.
"I knew she was alive."
"You knew about Lucas."
"Yes."
"And you said nothing."
Vincent looked at him.
"I thought I was protecting you."
Sebastian looked away.
For a moment, the anger returned.
But then he remembered something.
Vincent had spent his entire life protecting him.
Wrongly.
Painfully.
But sincerely.
Richard saw the hesitation.
And he hated it.
Because Sebastian was not breaking.
"You still defend him."
Sebastian looked at Richard.
"No."
A pause.
"I understand him."
Richard's expression changed.
"And that is why you lose."
Sebastian shook his head.
"No."
He stepped forward.
"That is why you lose."
Richard frowned.
"You think understanding makes you stronger?"
"No."
Sebastian looked at the screen showing Lucas.
"It reminds me what I'm fighting for."
The lights suddenly flickered.
Richard noticed.
"What was that?"
Sebastian didn't answer.
Vincent looked toward the ceiling.
Then smiled slightly.
Richard saw it.
And his expression changed.
"What did you do?"
Vincent looked at him.
"Something you forgot."
"What?"
"You spent years studying Sebastian."
A pause.
"But you never studied me."
Richard froze.
The warehouse doors unlocked.
Outside, footsteps approached.
Not Sebastian's men.
Not armed criminals.
Police.
Richard looked confused.
"You wouldn't."
Sebastian stared.
"I already did."
Richard looked at him.
"How?"
Sebastian's expression remained cold.
"Because I knew you would expect revenge."
A pause.
"And I knew revenge was what you wanted."
The truth was simple.
Sebastian had not come to destroy Richard.
He had come to end him.
There was a difference.
While Richard had been focused on control, Vincent had been working with Sebastian's legal team.
They had uncovered financial crimes.
Illegal transfers.
Evidence of murder attempts.
Everything Richard had done.
And everything would now become public.
Richard stepped backward.
"You think this changes anything?"
Sebastian watched him.
"Yes."
Richard laughed.
"Why?"
Sebastian looked at the screen.
"Because my son will never know your name."
The sentence hurt Richard more than any threat.
Because Sebastian understood something Richard never would.
A legacy was not built through fear.
It was built through love.
Moments later, authorities entered the warehouse.
Richard Vale was taken away.
But Sebastian did not watch him leave.
He turned toward Vincent.
The two men stood in silence.
Years of friendship.
Years of betrayal.
Years of loyalty.
All between them.
"I don't know if I can forgive you."
Vincent nodded.
"I know."
Sebastian looked at him.
"But I know why you did it."
Vincent looked surprised.
Sebastian continued.
"That doesn't make it right."
"I know."
"But it means something."
Vincent lowered his head.
For the first time in years, neither man needed to pretend.
They were both broken by the same person.
Richard.
Three days later, Sebastian finally brought Lucas home.
Not to a hidden house.
Not to a temporary location.
Home.
Lucas stood in the doorway of the mansion, looking around.
"Is this where you live?"
Sebastian smiled.
"Yes."
Lucas looked impressed.
"It's big."
Sebastian laughed softly.
"Too big."
Madeline stood beside them.
Watching.
For years, she dreamed of this moment.
Not a perfect moment.
Not one without pain.
But a real one.
A family standing together.
Sebastian looked at her.
"I still have questions."
"I know."
"I still have anger."
"I know."
A pause.
"But I also have time."
Madeline smiled through tears.
"Yes."
Time.
The one thing they had almost lost forever.
Later that evening, Sebastian sat outside with Lucas.
The boy was drawing again.
Sebastian looked at the paper.
"What are you making?"
Lucas held it up.
A family.
Three people.
Then he added a fourth.
A small version of himself.
Sebastian smiled.
"Who's that?"
Lucas shrugged.
"Everyone who protects us."
Sebastian looked at the drawing.
And finally understood.
Family was not about blood alone.
It was about who stayed.
Who fought.
Who chose you.
Five years ago, Sebastian Cole buried the woman he loved and believed his life ended with her.
Five years later, he discovered the truth.
Madeline was alive.
His son existed.
And the family he thought he lost had been waiting for him all along.
The world still knew Sebastian Cole as a dangerous man.
A powerful man.
A man nobody wanted to challenge.
But Lucas knew something nobody else did.
Behind the reputation.
Behind the empire.
Behind the fear.
May you like
Was just a father who finally found his way home.
