Chapter 8 - The Man He Trusted Most

Sebastian Cole had faced many enemies.

Men with guns.

Men with money.

Men who smiled while planning his destruction.

But none of them had ever hurt him before they even attacked.

Because the most dangerous enemy was not the one standing across from him.

It was the one standing beside him.

Vincent Hale.

The name echoed in Sebastian's mind as he stood inside Alexander Cole's mansion.

The same Vincent who had grown up beside him.

The same Vincent who had protected his back for decades.

The same Vincent who had been there the night Madeline disappeared.

Sebastian refused to believe it.

Not because he trusted Vincent completely.

But because some truths were too painful to accept.

"You expect me to believe Vincent betrayed me?"

Alexander watched him carefully.

"I expect you to ask yourself why he was always the first person to know your plans."

Sebastian's expression hardened.

"Careful."

Alexander didn't react.

"You built an empire based on information. You know better than anyone that information is power."

Sebastian stepped closer.

"And you think Vincent wanted power?"

"No."

Alexander looked toward the window.

"I think Vincent wanted control."

Silence filled the room.

Sebastian remembered every moment.

Every meeting.

Every decision.

Every time Vincent had appeared at exactly the right moment.

Every time he knew something before anyone else.

At the time, Sebastian considered it loyalty.

But now...

A question appeared.

How much did Vincent really know?

Alexander continued.

"Your father suspected him."

Sebastian looked at him.

"My father?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't he tell me?"

Alexander's expression changed.

"Because he loved you."

Sebastian laughed quietly.

A bitter sound.

"Everyone keeps saying they protected me."

His eyes became colder.

"But somehow I lost five years with my son."

Alexander said nothing.

Because there was no argument against that.

Sebastian looked away.

"Where is Madeline?"

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation was enough.

"Where?"

"Before I tell you, you need to understand something."

Sebastian's patience disappeared.

"No."

He stepped forward.

"I have spent five years believing she was dead."

His voice became heavier.

"I buried her."

A pause.

"I lived with that pain every single day."

His eyes locked onto Alexander.

"So you don't get to ask me for patience."

Alexander looked at him for a long moment.

Then he finally spoke.

"Madeline is in this building."

Sebastian froze.

"What?"

"She has been here."

The world stopped.

"Bring me to her."

Alexander nodded.

But before he moved, Sebastian noticed something.

A hesitation.

Fear.

Not from Alexander.

For Alexander.

Like he was worried about what Sebastian would discover.

They walked through the mansion.

Every step felt impossible.

Five years.

Five years of wondering.

Five years of grief.

And now she was only a few doors away.

They reached a private room at the end of the hallway.

Alexander stopped.

"Sebastian."

He looked back.

"Whatever happens next..."

A pause.

"Remember that Madeline made her choices because she loved you."

Sebastian opened the door.

And everything disappeared.

She was sitting beside the window.

Older.

Different.

But the same.

Madeline Hayes.

Alive.

For several seconds, neither of them moved.

Sebastian couldn't breathe.

He had imagined this moment a thousand times.

In his dreams.

In his nightmares.

He imagined anger.

Questions.

Pain.

But when he saw her standing in front of him...

There was only one thing.

Relief.

"Sebastian."

Her voice broke him.

Five years of control disappeared.

He walked forward slowly.

Like if he moved too quickly, she would vanish.

"You’re alive."

Madeline's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

"All this time..."

She looked down.

"I know."

The pain in those two words was worse than any explanation.

Sebastian stopped a few feet away.

"Why?"

Madeline closed her eyes.

"Because I was trying to protect you."

He shook his head.

"Everyone says that."

His voice cracked.

"Everyone says they protected me."

Madeline looked at him.

"But nobody protected you from losing me."

Silence.

The truth hurt because it was true.

Sebastian looked away.

"You let me believe you were dead."

"I had no choice."

"You had me."

Madeline's expression broke.

"I know."

Those two words carried years of regret.

"I wanted to come back."

"Then why didn't you?"

She looked toward the window.

"Because every time I tried, someone stopped me."

Sebastian froze.

"Who?"

Madeline didn't answer.

Not immediately.

And that scared him.

"Madeline."

She looked back at him.

"The person you trusted most."

His stomach tightened.

"Vincent?"

Her silence was enough.

Sebastian stepped back.

"No."

Madeline walked closer.

"Sebastian..."

"No."

His voice became sharper.

"You don't understand."

"I do."

"Vincent saved my life."

Madeline nodded.

"I know."

"He was my brother."

"I know."

"Then why would he do this?"

Madeline looked at him with sadness.

"Because he believed he was saving you."

Sebastian stared.

"What?"

Madeline sat down slowly.

"Vincent discovered your father had enemies inside the organization."

"So he helped hide you?"

"No."

She looked at him.

"He helped hide the truth."

Sebastian felt anger rising.

"Explain."

Madeline took a breath.

"After I found out I was pregnant, I learned someone was trying to use my child against you."

She paused.

"Your father wanted to protect Lucas."

Sebastian nodded.

"And Vincent?"

Madeline looked away.

"Vincent believed the only way to protect you was to remove the one thing that made you vulnerable."

Sebastian understood.

"No."

Madeline whispered:

"Me."

The word hit him.

Vincent didn't betray him because he hated him.

He betrayed him because he believed love was a weakness.

And Sebastian had no idea which possibility hurt more.

"He made me disappear."

Madeline nodded.

"But he wasn't the one who tried to kill me."

Sebastian looked at her.

"What?"

Madeline's expression changed.

"Vincent hid me."

A pause.

"Someone else hunted me."

The room became cold.

"Who?"

Madeline looked at him.

"The same person who killed your father."

Sebastian froze.

"My father died naturally."

Madeline shook her head.

"No."

The answer was quiet.

But certain.

"He was murdered."

For years, Sebastian had accepted his father's death.

A heart attack.

A natural ending.

A painful but simple truth.

Now everything was changing.

Again.

"Who?"

Madeline hesitated.

Then:

"Alexander was right."

Sebastian frowned.

"About what?"

"The person who destroyed your family has been close to you from the beginning."

His mind returned to Vincent.

But something felt wrong.

Something didn't fit.

Because Vincent had lied.

But Madeline wasn't afraid of him.

She was afraid of someone else.

Sebastian looked at her.

"Who?"

Madeline reached into a drawer and removed an old envelope.

She handed it to him.

"I kept this because I knew one day you would need it."

Sebastian opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of three people.

His father.

Alexander.

And another man.

Sebastian stared.

Because he knew that face.

Everyone in his organization knew that face.

The man who handled all of Sebastian's financial operations.

The man who had been loyal for years.

The man who had helped Sebastian expand his empire.

Madeline whispered:

"Your father trusted him."

Sebastian looked at the photograph.

Then at her.

"Who is he?"

Madeline's eyes filled with fear.

"The man who has been controlling everything."

Sebastian looked at the name written on the back.

And for the second time in two days, he felt the world collapse.

Because the truth was worse than betrayal.

The enemy had never been hiding.

He had been standing in Sebastian's office.

Signing his documents.

Shaking his hand.

Calling himself a friend.

The name written behind the photograph was:

Richard Vale.

Sebastian's closest financial advisor.

The man who knew every secret.

Every account.

Every weakness.

And now Sebastian finally understood.

Madeline was never the secret.

Lucas was never the target.

They were only pieces in a much bigger game.

May you like

A game that had started before Sebastian was even old enough to understand it.

And the man who started it was still free.
