Chapter 6 - The Brother Who Never Left

"Daniel."
The name echoed through the darkness.
For a moment, Adrian Vale forgot how to breathe.
The emergency lights slowly turned on, painting the conference room in a dim red glow.
Everyone looked toward the hallway.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because the impossible had happened again.
Another dead man had returned.
Adrian had spent one night watching graves open.
First Elena.
Then Marcus.
And now Daniel.
His uncle.
The man his family had buried before Adrian was old enough to remember him.
The man whose name had been erased from every conversation.
The man who was supposed to have disappeared forever.
Vincent stood frozen near the door.
His face carried something Adrian had never seen before.
Not fear.
Not guilt.
Regret.
That was worse.
"Who is here?"
Adrian's voice was low.
Nobody answered.
Then footsteps appeared in the hallway.
Slow.
Calm.
Confident.
A man stepped into the red emergency light.
Older than the photograph.
Gray hair.
Sharp eyes.
A face that carried the same features as Adrian's father.
The same family blood.
The same cold intelligence.
Daniel Vale looked at Adrian.
And smiled.
"Your father would be proud."
Adrian stared at him.
"You are dead."
Daniel tilted his head.
"So many people keep saying that."
Adrian's hand moved toward his weapon.
Immediately, Vincent stepped between them.
"Adrian."
The warning in his voice made everyone stop.
Adrian looked at him.
"You are protecting him?"
Vincent didn't answer.
That silence was enough.
Adrian's expression changed.
The betrayal cut deeper than any enemy.
"After everything?"
Vincent looked down.
"I am not protecting him."
"Then move."
Vincent remained still.
Adrian's voice became colder.
"Move, Vincent."
Slowly, Vincent stepped aside.
Daniel walked into the room.
He looked around.
At Elena.
At Lily.
At Marcus.
At Rebecca.
Then he looked at Adrian.
"So everyone finally gathered."
Adrian frowned.
"You planned this."
Daniel smiled.
"No."
He looked at Lily.
"Your father did."
Adrian immediately reacted.
"Don't talk about my father."
Daniel walked toward the table.
"You still believe he was a victim."
"He was murdered."
"Yes."
Daniel nodded.
"He was."
The answer surprised Adrian.
He expected denial.
A lie.
A fight.
Not agreement.
Daniel picked up the old photograph.
"Your father discovered the truth."
"About what?"
Daniel looked at the picture.
"About what this family really was."
Adrian crossed his arms.
"I am tired of hearing that."
"Then listen carefully."
Daniel placed the photograph down.
"Because everything you know about the Vale name is incomplete."
Nobody interrupted.
Daniel continued.
"Our family was not built on loyalty."
"It was built on control."
Adrian stared.
"Control over what?"
Daniel looked toward Rebecca.
She answered quietly.
"The organization."
Adrian turned.
"The mafia empire?"
Rebecca nodded.
"Not just that."
She opened another document.
"Years ago, your family controlled information. Politics. Law enforcement. Corporations."
Adrian's face remained calm.
But inside, everything was changing.
His entire life.
His entire identity.
Everything he had inherited.
It was not what he believed.
Daniel looked at him.
"Your father wanted to destroy it."
Adrian frowned.
"My father built it."
"No."
Daniel shook his head.
"Your grandfather built it."
A pause.
"Your father wanted to end it."
Adrian looked at Elena.
She slowly nodded.
"He found records."
"What records?"
"The original agreements."
Adrian looked confused.
Daniel answered.
"The agreements between the Vale family and the people who protected our power."
"Who?"
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus finally said:
"The Council."
The name carried weight.
Adrian noticed.
Even Vincent reacted.
"What Council?"
Daniel looked at him.
"The people who have controlled families like ours for generations."
Adrian laughed quietly.
"You expect me to believe there is some secret organization controlling everything?"
Daniel looked at him.
"No."
He stepped closer.
"I expect you to believe your own eyes."
Daniel reached inside his coat.
Several men raised their weapons.
But Daniel only removed a small device.
A flash drive.
He placed it on the table.
"Your father recorded everything."
Adrian stared at it.
"Why didn't you destroy it?"
Daniel smiled.
"Because I was never the one afraid of the truth."
Adrian looked at Marcus.
Then Vincent.
Then Elena.
Everyone had a different version.
Everyone had hidden something.
But one thing remained clear.
His father had left behind a final message.
A message nobody wanted him to see.
Adrian picked up the flash drive.
"Where can I watch this?"
Rebecca looked at him.
"Not here."
"Why?"
"Because if they know you have it, this building won't be safe."
Adrian looked around.
"This building is already compromised."
As if proving his point, the lights suddenly flickered again.
Everyone became alert.
Vincent immediately checked his phone.
His expression changed.
"What?"
Adrian noticed.
"Who?"
Vincent looked at him.
"The security team."
"And?"
"They are not responding."
The room became tense.
Daniel looked toward the cameras.
"They found us."
Adrian turned.
"Who?"
Nobody answered.
Then every screen in the conference room turned on at the same time.
Static.
A black screen.
Then a video appeared.
A man sitting in a dark room.
Adrian recognized him immediately.
His father.
Alive.
Recorded before his death.
Everyone stopped.
Even Daniel.
The video began.
Adrian's father looked directly into the camera.
"If you are watching this, it means I failed."
Adrian felt his chest tighten.
His father's voice.
After all these years.
The room remained completely silent.
The recording continued.
"Adrian, if you found this, do not trust anyone standing beside you."
Adrian looked around.
At Vincent.
At Elena.
At Daniel.
At Marcus.
The message continued.
"The person who betrayed me was someone you love."
The screen glitched.
Everyone watched.
Then his father said one final sentence.
"The person who killed me is the same person who raised you."
Adrian froze.
The video stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Because one question immediately appeared in everyone's mind.
Who had raised Adrian?
His father?
His mother?
His family?
Then Adrian's phone vibrated.
A new message.
Unknown number.
Only one sentence.
He opened it.
And his face changed.
Because the message contained a photograph.
A photograph of Adrian as a child.
Standing beside a woman.
A woman he had never seen before.
May you like
And underneath the image were four words:
Your real mother survived.
