Chapter 4 - The Man Who Never Died

The door opened.

Slowly.

Nobody inside the conference room moved.

Every weapon was raised.

Every eye was fixed on the entrance.

Adrian Vale stood in front of Elena and Lily, his body blocking them from whoever was coming.

For fifteen years, Adrian had lived with one belief.

His father was dead.

His sister was dead.

The people responsible were gone.

But everything he knew had collapsed in one night.

And now the man connected to all of it was walking toward him.

The door opened completely.

A man stepped inside.

Older than the photograph.

But unmistakable.

Marcus Vane.

He wore a dark suit.

No weapon.

No fear.

No hesitation.

He looked around the room like he had been invited.

Then his eyes stopped on Adrian.

For a moment, neither man spoke.

Then Marcus smiled.

"Your father always said you would become exactly like him."

Adrian's expression did not change.

"You were supposed to be dead."

Marcus looked at Elena.

Then Vincent.

Then back at Adrian.

"So were you supposed to know the truth."

The room became silent.

Adrian slowly walked forward.

"You killed my father."

Marcus did not deny it.

Instead, he looked at the photograph still sitting on the table.

"Your father was a brilliant man."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"Do not talk about him."

Marcus tilted his head.

"You think you know who he was?"

"I know enough."

"No."

Marcus stepped closer.

"You know the version he wanted you to know."

Vincent immediately moved.

"Adrian, don't listen to him."

Marcus smiled slightly.

"Still protecting him after all these years, Vincent?"

Adrian looked between them.

That sentence carried too much history.

"You two knew each other."

Vincent said nothing.

Adrian's eyes hardened.

"Answer me."

Vincent finally spoke.

"Yes."

The word felt heavier than any confession.

Adrian stared at him.

"How long?"

"Before I met you."

The room changed.

Because Vincent had not just hidden Elena.

He had hidden an entire life.

Adrian turned toward Elena.

"You all knew."

Elena looked down.

"I wanted to tell you."

"When?"

Her silence answered.

Adrian laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it hurt.

"Everyone keeps saying they wanted to tell me."

He looked around.

"But nobody did."

Lily looked up at him.

The anger on Adrian's face softened slightly.

Then Marcus spoke.

"Your father made the same mistake."

Adrian looked at him.

"What mistake?"

"Trusting people because he wanted to believe they were good."

Marcus walked toward the table.

"He believed loyalty could be earned."

His eyes moved to Vincent.

"He was wrong."

Vincent's hands tightened.

"Stop."

Marcus ignored him.

"Your father discovered something about the Vale organization."

Adrian watched carefully.

"What?"

"The empire was never built by your family alone."

Marcus tapped the photograph.

"There were other people behind it."

"Who?"

Marcus smiled.

"People your father was afraid of."

Adrian stepped closer.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

Marcus looked directly into his eyes.

"I expect you to remember."

Those words confused Adrian.

"Remember what?"

Marcus reached into his coat.

Several men immediately aimed their weapons.

But Marcus only removed a small object.

A key.

Old.

Silver.

He placed it on the table.

Adrian stared at it.

Because he knew that key.

It belonged to his father.

A key he thought had disappeared after the funeral.

"Where did you get that?"

Marcus looked at him.

"Your father gave it to me."

Adrian's expression changed.

Impossible.

His father trusted Marcus?

The same man connected to his murder?

"You are lying."

"Am I?"

Marcus looked toward Elena.

"Ask your sister."

Everyone turned.

Adrian looked at Elena.

She didn't answer.

And that was worse.

"Elena."

Her eyes filled with guilt.

"I didn't know everything."

"But you knew something."

She nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Adrian felt betrayed again.

"What did you know?"

Elena looked at Lily.

Then at Adrian.

"I knew Father discovered a secret hidden inside the family."

"What secret?"

Before Elena could answer, Marcus interrupted.

"The truth about Lily."

The room froze.

Adrian looked down at the child.

Lily immediately held onto Clara.

"What does she have to do with this?"

Marcus looked at the little girl.

"Everything."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Explain."

Marcus was silent for a moment.

Then he said:

"Lily is not just Clara's daughter."

Clara's face turned pale.

"Don't."

Marcus continued.

"She is the last remaining connection to the person your father was protecting."

Adrian looked at Clara.

"What is he talking about?"

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

"I was going to tell you."

"Tell me what?"

She couldn't answer.

Adrian looked at Elena.

His sister looked away.

That was enough.

The truth was bigger than he expected.

Much bigger.

Marcus picked up the silver pendant.

"The symbol on Lily's neck."

He pointed toward the mark.

"It belonged to an old bloodline inside the Vale family."

Adrian frowned.

"My family?"

Marcus nodded.

"A branch your father erased from every record."

"Why?"

"Because someone wanted them gone."

Adrian looked at Vincent.

"Who?"

Vincent remained silent.

Marcus answered.

"Your grandfather."

The words hit the room like an explosion.

Adrian stared at him.

"My grandfather?"

Marcus nodded.

"He built the foundation of your empire."

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

"He also destroyed anyone who threatened his power."

"You're lying."

Marcus smiled sadly.

"Your father said the same thing."

Adrian felt his chest tighten.

Because Marcus knew too much.

Too many details.

Too many things only family should know.

Suddenly, the lights flickered.

Everyone turned.

Vincent immediately looked toward the security system.

"We have a problem."

One of Adrian's men checked the monitors.

His face changed.

"What is it?"

The man swallowed.

"The building cameras are offline."

Adrian looked at Marcus.

"Your people?"

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

For the first time since entering the room, Marcus looked concerned.

"Not mine."

The security monitor suddenly turned back on.

A single camera feed appeared.

The hallway outside.

Empty.

Then a shadow moved.

Someone was standing near the elevator.

Adrian stared.

"Who is that?"

Nobody answered.

The figure slowly stepped into view.

A woman.

Wearing a long black coat.

Holding a folder.

Vincent immediately lost all color from his face.

"No."

Adrian looked at him.

"Who is she?"

Vincent whispered:

"Someone who should never have found us."

The woman walked closer.

The camera zoomed in.

And Adrian saw the folder in her hand.

Written across the front were three words:

Vale Family Archives

Then the woman stopped outside the conference room door.

And she whispered into the camera:

May you like

"Adrian... your father left you one final message."

The door unlocked.
