Chapter 5 - The Message From The Grave

The door unlocked.

Nobody moved.

For a moment, Adrian Vale thought the entire world had stopped.

The conference room had become a place where every truth he believed had been destroyed.

His sister was alive.

His closest friend had lied for fifteen years.

The man responsible for his father's death had walked into his home.

And now another stranger was standing outside with a file carrying the name of his family.

Adrian looked at the door.

Then at Vincent.

Then at Elena.

Nobody looked surprised.

That was what bothered him most.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone except him.

The door opened slowly.

The woman stepped inside.

She was in her late forties.

Dark hair pulled back neatly.

Cold eyes.

A black coat covering a simple gray suit.

She did not look like someone who came to threaten them.

She looked like someone who had spent years waiting for this exact moment.

The folder remained in her hand.

"Adrian Vale."

Her voice was calm.

"Who are you?"

The woman placed the folder on the table.

"My name is Rebecca Cross."

Adrian's expression changed slightly.

The name meant something.

Not because he knew her.

Because his father had mentioned it once.

Years ago.

A single sentence written in an old journal.

"Trust no one except Rebecca Cross."

At the time, Adrian thought it was meaningless.

Now he wasn't sure of anything anymore.

"You knew my father."

Rebecca looked at the photograph on the table.

"Better than anyone."

Marcus Vane laughed quietly.

"That is not true."

Rebecca turned toward him.

"You should not be here."

Marcus smiled.

"And yet I am."

The tension between them was immediate.

Adrian noticed.

Two people who knew each other.

Two people carrying different versions of the same secret.

"Enough."

His voice cut through the room.

Everyone stopped.

"I am done watching people talk around me."

Adrian picked up the folder.

"You brought this here."

He looked at Rebecca.

"You explain."

Rebecca nodded.

"Your father prepared this before he died."

Adrian opened the folder.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Old photographs.

Financial records.

Names.

Dates.

And one thing that made his hands stop.

A photograph of Elena.

But not the Elena he remembered.

This picture was taken after her supposed death.

She was standing beside a woman Adrian had never seen.

Holding a baby.

His eyes moved to the date.

Fourteen years ago.

A year after Elena's funeral.

His breathing became heavier.

"You were alive."

Elena stepped closer.

"Yes."

"And you had a child."

Her eyes moved toward Lily.

"No."

Adrian looked confused.

Rebecca spoke.

"Lily is not Elena's daughter."

The room went silent.

Everyone looked at Rebecca.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Then whose daughter is she?"

Nobody answered.

Rebecca opened another document.

"This is the truth your father died protecting."

She placed it in front of Adrian.

The paper contained a name.

A name Adrian had never seen before.

Sofia Vale.

He looked up.

"Who is Sofia?"

Elena's face changed.

And Adrian knew immediately.

She knew.

"Sofia was our father's daughter."

The words felt impossible.

Adrian stared.

"Our father had another child?"

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus stepped forward.

"Your father discovered your grandfather had erased an entire branch of the family."

Rebecca continued.

"Sofia was hidden because she carried something your grandfather wanted."

Adrian looked at Lily.

The mark.

The pendant.

The symbol.

"She had the mark."

Rebecca nodded.

"Yes."

Adrian felt the pieces slowly connecting.

"The symbol belonged to Sofia."

"Yes."

"Then Lily..."

Rebecca looked at the child.

"Lily is Sofia's daughter."

The room became silent.

Clara immediately held Lily closer.

Adrian looked at the little girl.

The child who had crawled beneath his table.

The child everyone was willing to kill secrets for.

A child connected to a family war she never asked for.

"Where is Sofia?"

Nobody answered.

Adrian already knew.

The silence was enough.

"She is dead."

Elena looked away.

Adrian closed his eyes briefly.

Another person.

Another loss.

Another secret buried under the Vale name.

"How?"

Marcus answered.

"Because she found the truth."

Adrian looked at him.

"You killed her."

Marcus didn't deny it.

"No."

The answer surprised everyone.

"I tried to stop them from killing her."

Adrian studied him.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

Marcus looked at Rebecca.

"Because she knows the truth."

All eyes turned.

Rebecca remained silent.

Adrian noticed.

"Rebecca."

She slowly exhaled.

"Marcus is telling the truth."

That shocked everyone.

Even Elena.

"What?"

Rebecca looked at her.

"Your sister does not know everything."

Elena's face tightened.

"What are you saying?"

"I am saying the person who destroyed your family was never Marcus."

The room went completely still.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Then who?"

Rebecca looked at the folder.

Then at Vincent.

Adrian followed her eyes.

And his stomach tightened.

"No."

Vincent immediately looked away.

Adrian walked toward him.

"Vincent."

The man who had protected him for twelve years looked like he was carrying a weight too heavy to hold.

"Tell me."

Vincent didn't speak.

"Tell me I am wrong."

Still nothing.

Adrian's voice became colder.

"Tell me."

Vincent finally whispered:

"I didn't know everything."

The answer was not enough.

"Then what did you know?"

Vincent looked at Elena.

"I knew your father was trying to expose someone inside the family."

"Who?"

Vincent closed his eyes.

"Your uncle."

Adrian froze.

"My uncle died before I was born."

Vincent shook his head.

"No."

The room changed.

"Your uncle never died."

Adrian stared.

"What?"

Rebecca opened another file.

Inside was an old newspaper article.

A death announcement.

A picture.

A name.

Daniel Vale.

Adrian recognized the face.

His father's younger brother.

The man his family said died decades ago.

But beneath the article was another photograph.

Daniel.

Alive.

Standing beside someone.

Someone Adrian knew.

His blood turned cold.

Because the person standing next to Daniel was Vincent Hale.

Young.

Much younger.

But unmistakable.

Adrian slowly raised his eyes.

"Vincent."

The room became silent.

Vincent looked like he finally understood.

There was no escape anymore.

Adrian held the photograph.

"Why were you with my uncle?"

Vincent opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, every light in the building suddenly turned off.

Darkness swallowed the room.

A second later, Adrian's phone vibrated.

One message.

Unknown number.

He looked at the screen.

Only one sentence appeared:

You trusted the wrong person. Ask Vincent who killed your sister.

Adrian slowly turned toward Vincent.

But Vincent was no longer looking at him.

He was staring at the hallway.

Because someone had just entered the building.

Someone only Vincent recognized.

May you like

And then Vincent whispered a name Adrian had never expected to hear.

"Daniel..."
