Chapter 1 - The Girl Beneath the Table

A little girl crawled beneath a conference table, whispering:

"Please don't hurt my mama."

When Mafia boss Adrian Vale arrived, he discovered a broken silver pendant hidden beneath his table.

On the back were two scratched words:

"For Lily."

Adrian suddenly realized this wasn't a missing child.

The first thing Adrian Vale noticed was not the girl.

It was Vincent Hale’s face.

For twelve years, Vincent had stood beside him through every war, every betrayal, every enemy who thought they could destroy the Vale empire.

Vincent had watched men point guns at Adrian.

He had watched rivals disappear.

He had watched Adrian walk away from situations where nobody else survived.

But he had never looked afraid.

Not once.

Until that night.

The private conference room had been silent moments before.

Adrian had been sitting at the head of the long black marble table, listening to three of his most trusted associates argue over a business deal that had already become suspicious.

Nobody raised their voice when Adrian entered a room.

Nobody interrupted him.

Nobody questioned him.

That was the kind of respect fear created.

But then Adrian heard something.

A small sound.

A quiet breath.

A child trying not to cry.

His eyes slowly moved beneath the table.

At first, he thought it was impossible.

A child did not belong in his world.

Children belonged far away from men like him.

Far away from guns.

Far away from secrets.

Far away from the kind of darkness that followed the Vale name.

But when Adrian leaned forward and looked beneath the table, he saw two frightened eyes staring back at him.

A little girl.

Maybe five years old.

Her blonde hair was messy.

Her small hands were wrapped around an old teddy bear with one missing eye.

She wore a simple white dress that looked like it had been washed too many times.

She was trying to disappear.

Trying to become invisible.

Adrian slowly lowered himself.

The entire room stopped breathing.

"Come out," he said quietly.

The girl shook her head.

"No."

Her voice was barely louder than a whisper.

Adrian looked at her carefully.

Not like a boss.

Not like a criminal.

Like a man trying to understand why a child was hiding underneath his table.

"Who are you?"

The little girl squeezed her teddy bear tighter.

"My name is Lily."

The name meant nothing to him.

Not yet.

"What are you doing here, Lily?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I need my mama."

A few men exchanged confused looks.

Adrian stood slowly.

His expression hardened.

"Where is your mother?"

Before the girl could answer, Vincent Hale stepped forward.

And that was when Adrian noticed something strange.

Vincent was staring at Lily's neck.

Not her face.

Not her clothes.

Her neck.

Adrian followed his eyes.

There was a small mark beneath her ear.

A faded symbol.

Almost hidden.

A circle with a thin line crossing through the middle.

Something that looked like an old family seal.

Vincent's face changed.

Only for a second.

But Adrian saw it.

A man like Vincent did not lose control.

Not after twelve years beside him.

Not after surviving everything they had survived.

Yet Vincent took one step back.

"Where did she get that?" Vincent whispered.

The room became silent.

Adrian turned toward him.

"What did you say?"

Vincent looked away.

"Nothing."

Adrian studied him.

That answer was worse than a confession.

Vincent never said nothing.

Not when something mattered.

Not when danger was close.

Adrian walked toward Lily.

The little girl immediately moved backward.

She expected him to be cruel.

She expected him to be like the other men she had seen.

But Adrian simply removed his expensive black jacket and placed it around her shoulders.

She looked surprised.

"You are cold," he said.

Lily stared at him.

Then she asked the question nobody expected.

"Are you the man who knows my mommy?"

Adrian froze.

"My name is Adrian Vale."

The girl's eyes widened slightly.

"My mama said your name."

That sentence changed the atmosphere.

The men in the room looked at each other.

Vincent's expression became darker.

Adrian noticed.

"What did she say?"

Lily looked down at the silver pendant in her hand.

The chain was broken.

The metal was scratched.

She held it like it was the last thing she had left.

"She said if anything happened to her..."

The girl swallowed.

"I had to find you."

Adrian reached for the pendant.

Lily hesitated.

Then she gave it to him.

The silver pendant was old.

Too old to belong to a random maid.

Adrian turned it over.

There were scratches on the back.

Two words.

"For Lily."

His fingers tightened.

Because he recognized the handwriting.

He had seen it years ago.

On documents.

On letters.

On a photograph hidden inside his father's old office.

A handwriting that should have belonged to someone who was dead.

Someone who could not have written this.

Someone who had disappeared fifteen years ago.

Adrian looked at Vincent.

"Who is her mother?"

Vincent didn't answer.

That was the first time Adrian remembered Vincent choosing silence over loyalty.

The door suddenly opened.

A woman rushed inside.

She was wearing a black and white maid uniform.

Her face was pale.

Her breathing was uneven.

"Lily!"

The child immediately ran toward her.

"Mama!"

The woman dropped to her knees and hugged her daughter tightly.

For a moment, Adrian saw something unusual.

Not fear.

Not manipulation.

A mother protecting her child.

Then the woman looked up.

And when she saw Adrian holding the pendant, all color disappeared from her face.

"You found it."

Adrian stared at her.

"You know what this is?"

The maid slowly stood.

Her hands were shaking.

"I know what it means."

"And?"

She looked at Vincent.

Not Adrian.

Vincent.

That small movement told Adrian everything.

There was a secret between them.

A secret that had existed before tonight.

"Tell me," Adrian said.

Nobody spoke.

The silence became heavier.

Finally, the maid whispered:

"Your father was not killed in an accident."

The room went completely still.

Adrian had heard many lies in his life.

He had built an empire by knowing when people lied.

But this was different.

Because for the first time in years...

Someone had mentioned the one mystery he never solved.

His father's death.

Adrian stepped closer.

"What did you say?"

The maid looked terrified.

"I wasn't supposed to tell you."

"Who told you that?"

Her eyes moved toward Vincent.

Again.

Adrian turned.

Vincent looked like a man standing in front of a grave he had tried to forget.

"Vincent."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Explain."

Vincent opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then his phone rang.

Nobody moved.

Nobody wanted to answer it.

Because everyone in that room understood one thing.

Whatever was about to happen had been waiting for this moment.

Vincent looked at the screen.

His face turned completely white.

Adrian noticed.

"Who is calling?"

Vincent slowly raised his eyes.

And whispered one name Adrian had not heard in fifteen years.

"Elena."

May you like

The phone continued ringing.

And the name on the screen belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.
